In this review, I'm going to take a look at a beer from the Magic Hat Brewing Company (‪@magichatbrewingco‬), and it's their Magic Hat #9. This is an American Pale Ale that is brewed with natural flavors. In my opinion, this is a classic beer in the Northeast region of the United States, but it's also one that I haven't had in over 10 years. In fact, I had no idea that Magic Hat, as a whole, were still around. The brand is now owned by FIFCO (the parent company of a few different breweries), so I'm curious to see how this one stacks up nowadays. Let's find out!
Commercial Description:
A sorta, dry, crisp, refreshing, not quite pale ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue with subtle notes of fruit and a floral hop bitterness. Beyond that, we dare not tell you more, for with each sip, mysteries are revealed and still more questions raised.
Pertinent Information:

I haven't had a beer from them since 2020. I miss Magic Hat. I never loved this beer but I loved their Heart of Darkness (5.7% stout), and Elder Betty (5.5% elderberry wheat ale).

I definitely enjoyed other beers from them more than this one, especially that Heart of Darkness. Honestly, this was solid for what it is. It's a shame the brand is pretty much just Magic Hat #9 and not much else. Cheers!

Man I can’t believe you can even find Magic Hat anymore. I never liked any of their beers but it’s cool to see an old school beer still around.

Wild, right? I was surprised as you when I saw it. I thought they were gone, but FIFCO now owns them, so I guess they'll be good for the foreseeable future. I enjoyed some of their other beers, but never cared for this one. That said, this bottle was fine. It's cool seeing a lot of folks popping out and saying how much this beer meant to them many years ago, and they still drink it occasionally nowadays. Cheers, Nick!

Classic brew! Arguably one of the original craft brews. I’m no expert, but this was around before most craft brews I can remember. One of the ones that got me into craft!

It's a definite craft beer classic, especially in the Northeast/New England region. I'd imagine a ton of people were introduced to this one back in the late 2000s/early 2010s. I bought quite a few of their mixed packs with it. Never really liked it, but understood why folks did. Nowadays? Not a bad one. Pretty solid. Crazy to see this is the only beer left of their brand basically, though. Cheers, Kevin!

I was in love with this beer back in the early 2000s. I was drawn to the brewery by their sense of mystery and darkness. They made it seem like their beers were conjured. There were other beers that I love but cant remember them right now. The Halloween pack was always a big hit with me. Needles to say, I have outgrown #9. It might be the Hazy IPA lover in me talking or just that I tend to stay away from sub 7% percent beers now adays. Either way great review. Cheers!
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
Yeah, the Halloween pack is primarily what I bought each year. I think this beer is probably quite similar to what I remember, but my palate is much different nowadays -- much like yours -- so I have a different opinion about it. Never cared for it, but now it's decent. It's crazy how our palates evolve and our tastes change. Pretty wild. Cheers, man!

I drank this beer in the late 1990’s and i didn’t really like it then, but i would drink almost anything without too much of a care back then. I revisited it about two years ago and it was really abrasive. It took all i had to drink a few with a smile 😅. Cheers 🍻!

LMAO! I was expecting the worst, but I've had a lot of beers on the channel that were horrible compared to this. Still nothing I'd want to voluntarily drink again, but it's fine for what it is. I can totally see how people love this one, though. Just not my bag, baby! Cheers, brother!

Like I said on Untappd, my first legal beer, paired with a lovely fish and chips with my cousin. I buy this every now and then in memory of him. I find this in 15 packs easy by me. Cheers, Joe!

I think it's super cool it was your first legal beer and you buy it occasionally in memory of your cousin. That's a pretty awesome story, dude. 15 packs? Damn, I had no idea. Glad it's still going strong. Cheers, buddy!

Wow it’s been a at least 8-10 years since I had a #9. First had it back in 2011 on draft in Massachusetts and remembered it being pretty good, but kind of medicinal tasting. Like crushed up Flintstone vitamins crushed up into a pale ale. Very unique beer for the time. I do enjoy apricot beers. Pyramid Apricot Ale (RIP) was one of my favorites back in my craft beer infancy. Cheers 🍻!
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
I could totally see the Flinstone vitamins vibe. This specific bottle was basically a decent American Pale Ale with a kick of "natural" apricot flavor. I remember it being more like you're describing, though. Fun fact: never had a single Pyramid beer. I remember wanting to try that Apricot Ale AND their Hefeweizen, but they didn't make it to NY state. I remember there used to be a ton of apricot beers back in the early 2010s. Not sure what it was, but man were they hot, haha! Cheers, Dan!

Wow a blast from the past indeed. I'll have to look for one to review. I used to be "one and done" with this. I liked it but never wanted a second. Great review and discussion!

I found the bottle at Wegmans, but I would imagine they're available at some other places. Definitely a one and done beer for me, too. I'm not a fan or anything, but I get the love for this one going back to the 2000s/2010s. It's a craft beer classic, IMO. Thanks, Kyle! Cheers!

This taste waaaaaaay better on tap. Had it from the tap back in 2009, back when craft beer was frowned upon

@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
I feel like most beer does. Usually fresher, and if the tap lines are cleaned properly, it's even better. I haven't seen this on tap since the mid-2010s, though. Crazy to think about. Cheers, dude!

Really? THAT IS AWESOME! Haven't had that one in a long time. We don't get Weyerbacher here in Buffalo, NY anymore, but I'll keep my eyes peeled next time I'm in Pennsylvania or Ohio. Thanks for the tip, Mike! Cheers!

This one is such a blast from the past for me. Personally reminds me of getting into craft beer back in college circa 2009-2010. There was a craft beer bar we always went to that had this on all the time. Anita Purple haze was another one like this they had on all the time too, although they had much better than those as well. I never really cared for this one a lot either even back then, although I never really found it offensive either. It was just ok. Still kinda sad they’ve mostly gone under. It’s rough game now in the beer business. You’ve got to make really good beer or have a really cool location to make it for the long haul.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
Dude, same! I got into craft beer right around then, as well, and this along with many other Northeast/New England area breweries helped me understand different styles. Never cared much for this one, but always enjoyed the mixed pack. Purple Haze is a blast from the past and I need to review it at some point. Bought my pops the new Abita mix pack of fruit beers, as that is one of his favorites. It's crazy how competitive the beer market has become. So many breweries. If you're not brewing amazing beer, or in a prime location, you can easily get left behind. A ton of older breweries are experiencing that, for sure. It's a shame, but it's just how it is. Cheers, Curtis!

@@averagejoe716 Yep I need to try Purple Haze again at some point if for no other reason than nostalgia. Haha. It seems like they’re still going relatively strong. Yeah and it does suck how hard it is for breweries now, and I’m kind of surprised so many new ones still open. There’s just so much to choose from.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
Purple Haze is definitely nostalgic, haha! Honestly, I don't think it's a bad beer. I've had it once or twice in the past 5-6 years, and it's fine. As for the breweries, I do think the sheer amount of breweries is insane at this point. From a consumer standpoint, I find myself overwhelmed by the selection whenever I go to bottle shops. It's unreal. I used to go to bottle shops back in the day and grab 6-8 beers for the week, and that was it as far as new releases go. I could pretty much try everything that was considered new. Rinse and repeat in subsequent weeks. Now? I'd have to buy a case -- or sometimes even more -- to do that same thing. Some breweries putting out 6-8 new beers per week themselves. Other Half is one of those breweries. It's crazy, dude.
@curtisbrause9255
@curtisbrause9255 Месяц назад
@@averagejoe716 Oh yeah you could never try every new release now. It’s nuts. You remember how it used to be with most breweries having multiple flagships. They might have more stuff on at the brewery but there weren’t near as many one offs. Now it’s all one offs like what Other Half does. Either a brand new beer or rotation of what feels like 300. Haha. It used to be more about this great beer from that brewery. Now it’s like name a beer from Other Half? It doesn’t really matter because they’re all good and it’s become more about the brewery than a specific beer. That all said, it makes for major FOMO every beer shopping experience. Haha
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
Facts, SON! I'm just glad that FOMO is something I threw to the side about five years ago. It used to drive me crazy, especially when I started the channel because I wanted to review everything new AND hyped. Then, I realized, with so many breweries out there, it was simply impossible. It really eased my anxiety. Now? I review what I enjoy, plus my palate has come full circle, so I love reviewing a bunch of stuff. Still love trying hyped stuff, but it's not something I need to enjoy doing this.

Could you easily read the date on the bottle ? I dont remember how they used to date their bottles. I might give it another chance someday but if there's no visible easy to read date on it and its in code, then forget it.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
When I bought it, I didn't see one, but as I looked at it in the light before I reviewed it, there was black font printed on the neck. I made it out to be this: B204. Considering this is brewed at Genny, that typically means the first letter = month, the following two numbers = day, and the final number = year. Put it all together and it was bottled on 02/20/24. I wish it were easier to read. No idea how they originally dated their bottles, though. I'm sure it was different. Cheers, Chaz!
@Chaz4543
@Chaz4543 Месяц назад
@@averagejoe716 Yeah I saw some today and since they are using that coding date I cant read I didnt even think about buying it.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 Месяц назад
Yeah, it's much easier to read when there's no liquor inside. Not sure who's bright idea it is for them to use black/grey font on a dark bottle. Just use the yellow font like many breweries do. So stupid.
