In this video I use a pizza box as a prop to demonstrate a 'magic move' to get a huge increase in your clubhead speed and driving distance.
As an added benefit you will also get a shallower plane, better angle of attack, and more accuracy too! You can't lose! You may become the best driver of a golf ball you know.

This video and the one on Bruce Keopka’s power fade is great combination. I am working really hard on my ball flight away from hazards. The dopamine response I get from choosing and hitting a power fades or high draw with the driver, is almost as good as a chip in! Power fades are so much fun!

Looking at your full swing in frame by frame at 11:36 min shows that you are swinging great! It is nice to see an instructor who can actually do what he is teaching. Your hips stay deep throughout the swing and you maintain your inclination and your right arm is still slightly bent at impact with your hips open about 45 and shoulders open about 25 degrees. I love it and it's a swing that I am working towards. One thing I notice about your swing is that at P5 to P6 the club shallows dramatically. I have seen this also in Marty Nowicki's swing as well.

After shoulder surgery clean-up in December, I went to the range yesterday and once I got that pizza box going, my 7 iron was high and straight. At this point I am straight pizza box backswing, meaning I have not incorporated that quarter-turn yet. Next, I will incorporate it into the driver.

What I meant was do you pull the club back on the backswing with the right side then pull it through on the downswing with the left side? Or do you push back with the left side then push through with the right side? Also is this the way you hit all your clubs? I find that pulling works best for me. I almost let go of the club with my right hand like VJ Sing does.

Hmm it's hard to answer a feel question. I certainly feel pull in the left side but I do the opposite of actively pulling...I try to relax.

I really like this concept for getting the club into the slot on the downswing. It’s a great feel. The pizza box visual is really easy to understand, and I like it better than other similar analogies ... throwing a frisbee, making a karate chip, shipping a rock on water, or turning a double play in baseball. This one just kind of clicks with me. Thanks for explaining and sharing. Green pepper, onion, and Canadian bacon from a new subscriber.

Steve, Namaste from India and Thanks a Million for explaining what Dan meant by spinning the meatballs. I have finally got it after fifteen years and feel more courageous to incorporate into my swing. Dan was a very fine teacher but I was studying with him via exchanging swing video lessons from Japan and with his book. I always found it intriguing but didn’t stick with it long enough and that left my swing incomplete thanks only to me. I could occasionally get it right on the range but felt too intimidated by its raw power to be able to really try it out. Luckily I have been getting more success with it now after all these years. So this timely and detailed explanation is a God send like an early Christmas present. I guess some lessons take the longest and dearest to learn. I had spoken with Mike twice, while translating and selling his Peace River DVD in Japan and also bought the Flammar from him. I used to be close pen-buddies with Philip Reed for a year until after Mike passed away. So I have no words to express how thankful I am to you for spreading the gospel for so long after Mike, Dunaway and Dan. It feels like we are in great company and are truly blessed 🙏😊

The reverse spinning at the bottom of the setting super charges the setting through contact. I really felt the increased speed at the bottom. Thank you. Can't wait to try this at the range.

I have been trying this move for the last couple of months when I discovered that the trail elbow will tuck in with a throwing motion starting with palm up at the top of the back swing. It seemingly contradicts the so called errors of chicken wing trail elbow and crossing the shaft at the top of the back swing. However, as you said it does "turbocharged" my swing. It is the palm up/palm down concept.

Hi Steve. Enjoyed the video and your concepts of spinning the pizza box with your trail hand at the top of your swing. Although at 72 I can no longer bend my trail hand even close to the degree you show holding the pizza box. I might also add that as you spin the pizza box with your trail hand; the trail elbow responds naturally in kind by heading inward towards your trail hip; shallowing your club. Keeping this in mind; the downward swinging of your arms must occur simultaneously to the activation of your lower body. In fact when I simply activate my downswing with my trail elbow turning inward towards my hip and disregarding my trail hand; it seems that my lower body naturally shifts and respond in kind. Take it from Al Bundy. Ha Ha. 😃Cheers

I am 72 and about a year ago I lost my temper and hit a 3 rescue out of the rough 245 yards when I normally hit it off a tee a max of 200. I did it again today and this time I recognized it as the pizza box move. But it really has nothing to do with the hand, it is purely an elbow action. Everything you say happens except when you get down to your rib cage your elbow points more it less parallel to the target. I think for maximum power and accuracy the elbow gets under the ribs and points into your gut. I might add that this is how I hit a loop drive in table tennis and it was scary fast. I followed up that drive by hitting a 5 iron choked up 150 yards onto the green and sank a 60 foot putt for a birdie and went into shock. So this is very tentative, but I think it is worth exploring.

Absolutely wonderful tip! It took me a bucket of balls to really get out of the comfort zone called "30 years of manifested golf swing" and really wind up, but when I managed to do it without losing focus on the weight shift it instantly added 10 yards on the session average with my 36 degree 7 iron. 170 to 180 with lousy range balls. I can't say I was consistent during the session, mainly because focusing on this had me forgetting making a proper pivot action, but there's no denying I saw and felt the potential with this. And for the first time I felt I was throwing the club. Nothing holding back. I got that feeling of a loose, free, hard practice swing, that I've had trouble transferring to an actual golf shot. I've seen my fair deal of Mike Austin videos, but I can't recall him ever talking about this? Did he do this without mentioning it or have I just missed it? Or was it straight up a Shauger take on the MA-swing? Btw "turbocharge" was a good choice of word. That's really what it feels like. Cheers Steve, and thanks again for the work you put in for us Mike Austin'ites.

This is awesome! I finally just figured this out after about 5 years of hard work. I actually connected the dots by watching couples fling his right hand. I have been using more of the "bottom" of the grip and feeling this more with my left arm-works really well too. Then once I incorporated the right hand ABSOLUTE game changer move! Keeping the right hand up is critical. Moe Norman called it sunny side up. This is even more powerful with torque. It will feel like you're going to hit it 40 yards right. You won't...it squares up because the momentum and the grip end slowing. Before this I was squaring the club manually through rotation of the arms, face etc. This is so much easier and way faster! I couldn't believe the difference. 5 iron was carrying 215 driver 285-290 carry. Prior= 5 iron 192 carry Driver 265-272 carry... Absolute game changer! Thank you for confirming how crazy this is and the extra power move. Great video!

Just getting into your videos Steve. Great stuff! Been going to Barber's Practice facility for years. Remember the automatic ball tees? Anyway, my #'s seem to be getting better but nowhere and I mean nowhere nearly as good as yours,,, but I'm working on it. Then again I just turned 60 so.... I see your your club path is in2out and your club face slightly open but less than the path. Is your ball flight a consistent draw? 7deg up and 180 ball speed?!?! Wicked good. Although I'm hearing most pro's are either slightly down or level with the driver - is that true? Love to hear your comments on that. May just have to a session in that far corner of practice tees once the wind dies down. Meanwhile, thanks for the videos. And oh yeah, sausage and mushrooms. Jersey boy here....

I made a simple adjustment in my swing and now I find it almost impossible to not hit the ball straight. What most of us do is stop our backswing too abruptly with our index finger and then push the racquet into a tight turn forward with index finger again. This results in a trail side dominant swing . What Mike Austin does is create a three move arm action. But the gist of the thing is instead of stopping the backswing with the index finger, he stops it very gradually with the fingers of the lead hand most specifically the little finger. The butt of the club pushes the relaxed fingers away from the heel of the hand. So you start the forward action of the arm by slowly pulling the butt of the racquet back toward the heel of the hand with those same fingers. This creates the same type of turn but it persists much longer. The butt of the racquet never reaches the heel of the hand because your arm goes into the pivot lever pivot action you describe elsewhere with no effort on your part. You get an unbelievably quick flicking action with your lead arm that squares the club without doing any violent turning actions with your torso.

An excellent exposition of the Austin/Dunaway swing method. Thank you, this has helped me enormously. Can I just ask a couple of questions? I believe the method that Dunaway followed included keeping the face square to the path all the way back and down. Does this pizza box idea work with the alternative method of opening and closing of the clubface on the upswing and the downswing respectively? Lastly, in the swing that you demonstrate here, at what point do you feel you are actively uncocking the wrists?
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
Yes the pizza box works with virtually any method. I do advocate having the face square to the arc through the impact zone. I am actively applying torque with my hands starting from about shoulder high, just after I step down. However, many people feel like its immediately from the top. Your mileage may vary.

Won't be long now Steve... and teaching pros will discover the power of the hands... instead of "It's just centrifugal force derived from rotation" ;)
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
Yes a very very prominent teacher from Canada I know believes that.
@mzrb1
@mzrb1 4 года назад
Steve... to support the centrifugal argument, many refer to the Trebuchet... which comes to a forceful stop and thus provides a fulcrum for the centrifugal sling. Overlooked is the fact there is no such stop or fulcrum in a smooth golf swing. Conservation of momentum in the golf swing would result in clubhead and shaft lag throughout whole swing due to inertia, if wrists remained totally 'passive', as in loose hinge joint. Given the considerable inertia to be overcome at maximum lag (as caused by inertia) so that clubhead catches up with correct arm position at impact, the typically avoided question is... where does all that power come from when it clearly can not be a trebuchet type of centrifugal force ? So many teaching pros have so many things right... yet none have got it all together :) And when they figure out WHO they are talking to... Golf would become simple again ?
@mzrb1
@mzrb1 4 года назад
Steve... I should have added, that the confusion about passive hands probably arises from "hand/wrist force" being applied BEFORE impact, at which point the job is done, and hands and wrists therefore can become passive, for that misleading "No Effort Hit" feel. Some Pros talk about the "Strain" on Wrist and Forearms ''fighting the downward pull o the centrifugal force"... ignoring real cause.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
@@mzrb1 And also there is the theory that as the clubhead passes the hands, the wrist force is present but not doing anything...like when you are riding a bike really fast downhill and you are pedaling but not adding to your speed.
@mzrb1
@mzrb1 4 года назад
Steve. That is true. As said... the job is done by then... and thus feel of no effort hit. And that's where it all gets back to TIMING again... knees, hips, torso, shoulders arms, forearms, wrists and hands... that hellish kinetic chain of progressive acceleration and alignments :) But isn't it weird that all have to work hard, at the right time, except the most important hands and wrists... or so they say ? :)

@@Inmotion70 That must be true - when you think about it - how else would they be getting such significant track-man stats with what appears to be a 1/2-to-3/4 backswing? It can't just be 100% brawn/physicality. The mystery for me is how some small stature golfers, such as Hogan, David Duval, or even Joe Durant, were employing this move to generate power from a top of backswing position that was not crossing the line, even with the driver. Perhaps they were only spinning it 45 degrees? But thanks for this. The driver has been the weakest part of my game. I'm always in search of "positive" instruction - which I define as "telling me something TO DO" rather than "to not do." I had trouble with the concept of throwing out and, specifically, throwing out late, out of fear of not squaring the club. I'm hopeful that spinning the pizza box will help me do the throw-out move, at the right time, without fear. Also appreciate you saying this move is not in isolation. My hoped-for side benefit is that this move will help remove my fear of hiting it on the heel - which (in my perception only) has been happening more-than-occasionally when keeping my posture correct in the downswing via your chair drill (confession: I previously had a chronic torso "pull away-from-the-ball" issue in the downswing - and so I had a chronic toe-miss going back decades). I've always known that swinging the club harder/faster will pull the club toward me (closer to me - even when keeping correct posture) and so I could fix the heel miss by just swinging more aggressively. But that didn't always help keep the ball on the course. Your pizza box move combined with the throwing out move will hopefully help me sync up my posture, transition, and "go-left" post-impact goals. I second what someone said earlier: thanks for backing up the advice with your own track-man stats in real time. I confess to not using the numbers very much in practice, because it's just been depressing to see a clubhead speed of 87 mph over and over again. This gives me some hope that the numbers might actually start to go north. I think Wayne Defrancesco was trying to teach me this (for the past 8 years) but with different words. I owe both of you (and many others) a great debt. Wayne is unfairly criticized for being overly analytical. I just find it helpful to get information from many different perspectives, because you never know what is going to click and with whom - witness Brendon Todd coming back from the full-swing yips (and nearly giving up the game). The comeback began after a friend gave him Bradley Hughes' book and then Todd and Hughes began working together.
