Just a bit of info, as long as your timing marks line up, All of the pistons are recessed enough not to make contact with the valves. Also, the intake cam on the on the driver side must be rotated clockwise then realigning and the exhaust counter clockwise, or they can make contact. Hope this helps.

How did you do to torque the cam bolts back on, the same way? The service manual for my 05 lgt says to torque to 21 lb ft then tighten by 45 degrees. Its damn near impossible to tighten that much even with what I thought was the tool for the job ( company 23 cam tools), ended up chipping my exhaust cam sprockets in the process.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 6 лет назад
Yup! Just reverse the direction of your ratchet!! Belt routing is the exact same. The fastner torque specs are a bit confusing on the Subbie Cams and are even too tight from the factory. The spec in your manual is called a torque to yield spec. Its probably way to high for what is needed. Thats why the cam bolts are such a challenge to get off. They shouldn't be. So on these I usually look up the actual bolt thread size and set it according to a generic chart for fastner strength. So what you need to do is... Measure your bolt thread size. If it is 12mm for example, google, "12mm bolt torque guide". That will give you the given bolts actual industry standard torque recommendations. That is what I use. ~shaun

Does not work even with breaker bar or impact. Belt stretches. Suggest just ordering the holding tools to save the headache.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
This trick uses simple physics. It will work If you use the idea in the video. Use a breaker bar only. DO NOT USE IMPACTS EVER FOR SUBURU CAM BOLTS EVEN WITH ANY CAM HOLDING DEVICE oR METHOD. They sometimes need about 200lbs+ of breaking force by hand sometimes. The fastener is only a 10mm or 12mm but they weirdly "stick" causing problems with normal removal. Which is why impact guns are a horrible idea ever with these particular cam bolts. One of three things will happen with the trick- ...or any cam holding tool. 1. Fastener "snaps and is removed normally. 2. Fastener snaps breaking into two pieces. 3. Allen head strips. 1. Result is the normal with the trick, the breaker bar, and a good looking fastener that is not rounded. 2. & 3. Result normally with the trick (or any special tool method). Usually 2. & 3. mean cam replacement is needed to rectify damage. 2. & 3. happen on this particular motor during impact gun attempts with or without the proper tools. The trick holds everything stationary so massive force can be applied. These fasteners do not remove easily at all. The trick works better for me than the "special tools". It also works on any other motor with a timing belt if needed. I don't recommend reusing the belt. Always use an old belt 😀🔧

Texhnically No. But i would recommend putting them in a neutral spot if you can so that they don't turn on you while servicing from the valve spring pressure.

I saw your other video on this bolt and asked why you did not use an impact wrench. I heard what you said here, about how some people may strip the bolt. I guess then it's a judgement call for each person, but at least you showed a safe, sure-fire way to do it. Thanks! Great video!

I'm up to this point on a 1997 Legacy Outback. The timing marks are all lined up and the timing belt is off. I'm worried about removing the cam bolts and pulleys because I have no idea how it works in terms of putting the pulley back on exactly how it came off in terms of being lined up with the timing. I'm afraid that I won't know how to line up the cams once I take this apart and replace the seal. Looking at your video, it appears that there is a hole on the pulley that fits onto a tab there by the end of the camshaft, and this is probably how the alignment is maintained. Could you confirm that please, and that no special cam lock tool or procedure is necessary to keep the cam lined up?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 5 лет назад
Hey! Ok first off these DOHC cams systems are harder to deal with than the SOHC style. Both style engines have very critical things that need to happen like having the marks line up and such. The SOHC are harder in every way, you can not see what you are doing on the timing marks with out a mirror, unless you have the engine out. I just want you to know that going in. Getting the bolt out on the cam can be surprisingly difficult on the DOHC and that is why I personally like the belt method to hold the sprocket vs a special tool. It is easier to hold the sprocket. But many people also prefer the cam sprocket holding tool. So its a matter of preference that comes with experience there. Once removed, the sprocket is "keyed" with a dowel pin, so it does only go on one way. There is nothing to hold it other than the bolt holding the pulley to the camshaft. Everything there is pretty simple. But the dang bolt is hard to get out. To line up the timing marks and put it all back together, you will want to look up "timing procedure for DOHC engines. There are special tools that can be used like cam locks. But the easiest method will be found in a video. I know the method, I don't have a video yet on it. Its not hard. But you want to do all of this work in a clean environment and research everything heavily before hand. Most importantly, don't be in a hurry. That would be my best advise. It sounds as though you are on the right path.

This is one way to do the job if you do it only once or it s a field-repair. For someone who will do this more than once, buying a sprocket holding tool from Company 23, or any of the Amazon/eBay versions, is a worthwhile investment. Install the crankshaft bolt, but not all the way bottomed on the snout, lay the sprocket holding tool on the crank bolt, and use a breaker bar to loosen the bolt. Makes it a one-man job and very easy to do. Pro tip: get yourself a FA20/FB25 crankshaft bolt to have in your tool set. It is the same size and thread pit as the EJ crank bolt, but it has a longer shank which makes it easier to use the bolt as a stopped for the cam sprocket holding tool on both banks of the EJ-series engines.

I broke a reducing socket and a 10mm hex socket on one of my cam bolts. Got out the angle grinder, ground the outside of the bolt to 16mm hex (used the inner hex as a guide), and finally got it off. It felt like over 150ft-lbs of torque to break it, and I thought for sure the bolt was going to shear, but somehow it came off...Also I used the cam tool and just had it rest on a sturdy surface while a friend held both the socket and the tool firmly against the cam gear.

I have the 23 tool for the EJ257 and the Timing belt holding the cams are way easier to remove and no damaging of the cams nor the bolt. As I have almost stripped 1 of 4. @EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
If the subaru crank mark is lined up that puts all 4 of the pistons exactly 1/2 the way in the bore and should clear all the valves just fine. The intake and exhaust valves could hit each other though. So be careful. You should be able to remove any of the camshafts. But turn each one you work on a full turn with a wrench carefully to be sure it doesn't contact any pistons or valves while you work on it😀🔧
@skylerkraykovic6581
@skylerkraykovic6581 2 года назад
@@EasyFixShaun so if I move my crank counter clockwise a single tooth to put it in line I'll be alright? The top right cam seems kind of stuck, I can't move it with my hand and it's 30 degrees off, but everything else is lined up. I'm planning on setting the crank to tdm then trying to take off the cam and replace it with usdm can since I won't be running AVCS on my ej205. When it put it on will it only fit in the same place i took it off at? Once I put the old cam gear on I will attempt to move it into place by moving it alone clockwise. I'm guessing based on how much resistance there is I'll have to hold it in place when I put the timing belt on, after I replace all the gaskets and water pump.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
You should need ok to move the crack one tooth back into position. No valve will hit the pistons. They are all half way on the bore. The danger is with the belt off the valves could hit each other. If intake and exhaust are both trying to open on any cylinder they can hit each other and get damaged. So be careful of that. Does that make sense?
@manuelbravo881
@manuelbravo881 2 года назад
What would happen if I took the pressure off the driver cam before lining the ticks up?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
As long as the mark for the crank sprocket is lined up you should be able to spin sohc engines with no mechanical contact on any valves. By lining up the crankshaft sprocket mark, it puts all four pistons exactly half way in the cylinders so they can not contact valves even if they are moved or all the way open. But...if you have a DOHC the exhaust and intake valves can still hit each other inside the combustions chambers because they operate independently from one another on their own camshafts. If the Dohc cams are turned at the same time on, the same head, and are not on a belt and in time, they will touch. So DOHC have to be extra careful. I am always carefully on either style cam systems. I make sure crank sprocket is always lines up. (This is a neat way to line up marks and have an extra layer of safety with all pistons mid way in the cylinders and i have only seen this on Subarus). Then i always slowly turning cams with a wrench when not connected to the belt to insure they aren't going to touch anything. 😀🔧

You CANNOT damage the valves if the cam rotates. If the crank marker is lined up the the pistons are all halfway in, unlike other engines.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 5 лет назад
True! good call. I still like to play it safe with the DOHC motors. But you are 100% correct. Subaru doesn't use TDC of Cylinder #1 to do the timing procedure. They put all four pistons in the middle of the cylinder (in the middle of their stroke) and that's where all the timing marks will line up correctly. minimizes and eliminates any chance of piston to valve contact while doing belt service for any reason. If the belt snaps while the engine is running, there is a risk of collision of piston and valves. All bets are off in that situation. But with that said, I have only seen that happen at a ratio of 1 in 10. So most times I get lucky, and timing belt maintenance service is all that is needed. Go Subaru!! :)
@thegngrbredmann87
@thegngrbredmann87 4 года назад
Are you talking about if the driver cam spins 180°
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 4 года назад
I’m talking about when the engine is running. When it’s running, if the belt breaks, engine damage is VERY possible. But while working on the timing belt....if the engine crankshaft TIMING marks are lined up....it’s hard to damage valves. Sometime a can will slip because of spring pressure and turn 1/4 turn real fast. Since all. Four of the pistons are 1/2 in the strike when the crankshaft timing marks are lined up there should be no damage when working on the timing belt. So basically all Subaru timing marks position. The pistons 1/2 way. When servicing any timing belt on any Subaru.... as long as the timing marks are used, there is minimal risk of colliding pistons and valves accidentally during repair of the belt.

My bad. Make sure you only use Subaru seals and everything should go ok. I tried using aftermarket seals initially and they leaked on startup. I found the seal lip surface located in a slightly different spot than stock. So go Subaru only because you will want to install the cam seal in the same spot weather it’s oem or aftermarket. Don’t make that mistake. It sucked doing it twice. They are easier to perform if the engine is out of the vehicle. But it can be done in the vehicle no problem to. You will need an inspection mirror. Plus if the radiator is removed that will help a lot too.

@Paul-oh4fe
@Paul-oh4fe 3 года назад
@@jbknudsen06 Not if you set timing correctly before releasing tension on the belt. Completely normal. Bank 1 (passenger side) should move freely and easily. You can rotate those any way you want. Bank 2 is under tension and will be much tighter than bank 1. You have to rotate the intake cam clockwise and the exhaust cam counter clockwise.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 3 года назад
@@jbknudsen06 Make sure the crank sprocket mark is lined up. That will put all four piston exactly in the middle of the bore on Subarus. Then you can try turning that cam with a wrench. It may just be hard to turn because the cam is pushing on a valve/spring in the position it is in. Always turn carefully. Any sudden stops.....dont force it. Something is stopping it. The springs will feel like a sudden stop but they are not. There is a very distinct difference between a spring stopping you under normal conditions and a metal on metal stop from a valve hitting a piston or debris or metal chunks stopping it. If everything was running fine when you tore it apart, it should just be normal spring pressure that can be overcome with a wrench. Use a wrench only. You will have control on the downside of the cam while spinning it. If you use a rachet, the cam will spin uncontrolled on the downside. On a Subbie if that happens its not a big deal. But it can be scary.

It caused a bad engine oil leak once I started the engine in the garage immediately after the repair. I had to remove everything and do it all over again.

@@EasyFixShaun Thanks for the reply. So when I release the belt and clamps holding the camshaft sprocket to remove them, the camshafts won't spin out of TDC?

Rad Clifford I am also concerned as well because with a slight touch of the bottom cam spins out of tdc. How do we prevent that. you can’t install that company tool to hold it in place since your trying to remove it lol.

As long as you use the timing mark on the crankshaft you won’t damage anything from the cans slipping and spinning. They will slip and spin once the belt is removed because of valve springs pushing them one direction or another. I don’t use any special tools to install the belt other than a 17mm wrench to adjust the cams a bit as I go. Basically the passenger side marks line up easily. The drivers side cams marks are harder because the sprockets have spring pressure and want to slip. I just carefully work around this and make my way until I can install the final pulley and release the tensioner. I will post a video that shows this quite well.

This is the easiest way right here. I only use this method 😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D1PunROR3VU.html

I know you posted this 2 years ago. But its still helping folks. My daughter's boyfriends forester blew a cam pulley and we would have never got it off without your help! Thank you!

No way! Thanks a lot. I’m glad it helped you out. Those bolts are usually really hard to crack loose. This is the only way for me that doesn’t strip them out. So I figured I should make a video. It was one of my very first videos 😀

Your way made it easy! She still took some muscle but I didn't see another way to do it without damaging something or making the cam turn which is a big no no lol. Keep up the good work man we appreciate it!

Didn't work for me, but I'm sure it's something I'm doing. Belt is in the same set up as in the video but it's just striping the bolt.

@@UTRC51 Sorry to hear that. Once the bolt strips there's not a lot of good options. 10mm hex was used?

Did your hex tool break or did the camshaft fastner break?

Use a external bolt extractor. Tap it on the bolt head. Also works if you do round out the Hex.
@EasyFixShaun

Why would I use an external bolt extractor? I removed the bolt and saved the bolt with no damage. Do you mean, in the event that the fastener rounds off?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 3 года назад
I have had good luck not using an impact. Removing by hand only using the hex in the fastener like the video. I luckily haven’t rounded any fasteners. I use the hex first. If it rounds I would go to step two and use an extractor for sure.

The biggest issue causing the original hex head fasteners to round and strip out seems to be the use of an impact gun on them. Normally that shouldn’t be a problem with camshaft fastener removal. But with these Subaru’s in particular, at the camshafts they are a big problem. Avoid the problem and do it by hand like in the video. You will find the fasteners are rediculously “stuck”. They aren’t crazy tight from a pound feet of torque aspect. The are “stuck” for some other design flaw aspect. I think the fine threaded fasteners and the way they butt up against the timing gears is the cause. I’m not really sure. But remove and install only by hand. Any other way just isn’t worth it. If they stripped, the repair you are attempting gets 1000x harder and more frustrating. Sometimes the camshafts and fasteners are destroyed. It’s that rediculous. Avoid the problem all together and just learn from other people’s mistakes. Do it by hand, and cross your fingers that it all works out. It’s your best shot.

I used impact wrenches all the time. Never had a failure. Installed hundreds over the years with an impact. You have to know how much force to use and be careful.

I agree. Once you have enough experience torque specs become second nature to some degree.
