Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle (except held items)
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- My Pokemon have perfect genetics to ensure fair comparison between species.
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The Trash-Can-Puzzle is automatically solved so times are not affected by RNG
-- The bike is allowed (the bike skip is not)
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game & timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu
Yellow Version changes from Red/Blue:
1. You cannot use Dig/Escape Ropes in Bill's House or the Pokefan Club
2. You cannot talk to the trainers in Blaine's gym to battle them
3. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine do not have Good AI
4. The Elite Four have better movesets
5. Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni have higher level teams
6. Blaine doesn't use Super Potions are full HP
7. The rival picks his eeveelution based on the outcome of the first two battles.
-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535
-- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15
Resources:
-- Gen 1 Stat Calculator: pycosites.com/...
-- All Trainer Pokemon have IVs (DVs) of 89888 (hp, atk, def, spd, spc)
-- All Trainer Pokemon have EVs of 0
-- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64
-- All crits have a 1/256 to fail, even if the rate is 100%
-- Crits don't multiple damage by 2, it's a formula based on level

Obviously this run is just for fun as this isn't a real University Magikarp. I will say though that because that was a Japanese only event, it is still *theoretically* impossible to beat Gen 1 with a Magikarp.... UNLESS you trade with Gen 2. There was an English Language event New York City Pokemon Center, where Magikarp got Reversal (needs to be deleted) but also BUBBLE. That is the only way anyone could have legitimately beaten these games with Magikarp. Don't really have a point just never had a good place to mention this haha.

Yeah the bubble Magikarp with Reversal is pretty cool! I want to try that one in gen2 at some point. Of course all these runs are just for fun, since it's only possible to start Yellow with a Pikachu! (Which was always very frustrating for me as a kid!)

Just want to note with how Gen 1 and 2 works, you can't trade Pokemon from the JP versions to the international versions without the international save corrupting, so the University Magikarp truly is locked to the 20 Japanese cartridges that obtained it back then.

The probability of your trainer ID alone matching the University Magikarp's trainer ID would be 1/65535 since that is the possible range for IDs from 00000 to 65535. However you would also have to match the trainers name which if you include all the potential combinations of characters that would push the odds to 1/2,147,483,648 in Gen 1 and Gold/Silver since the OT can only be male but in Crystal the odds go up to 1/4,294,967,296 since the OT can be male or female. From Gen 3 onward, it's impossible to have a traded Pokemon obey you accidentally by matching trainer ID, secret ID, and trainer name because the catch location of the Pokemon is listed as "Met in trade" which actually controls whether the Pokemon is owned or not in Gen 3 onward.
@anlev11
@anlev11 Год назад
Does the trainer name actually matters? Because you could just transfer the Magikarp to a cartridge, see it's trainer name and then initiate a new game in another cartridge and give the same trainer name, just needing to reset for the ID. I calculate the expected number of attempts needed to match the ID considering the 1/65535 sucess rate. It would have 50% probability to get it within 45426 attempts, or 90% probability to get it within 150901 attempts.
@MatthewIceDragon
@MatthewIceDragon Год назад
@@anlev11 Yeah that is true unless the OT name was randomized too you would just have to name your character the same name as the OT and then try and roll for that ID over and over. That's where a tool assisted run would be useful since it would get that roll first try lol.

Gen 1 carts don't die as quickly as Gen 2. My husband and I have quite a few (mine, his, his cousin's, and even one we picked up in Japan) and all of them (6 or so in total) still hold their saves. His cousin actually had a Toys R Us event Mew on it that must have been from 1999 or so. However, if you wanna be super safe, you want to transfer the Pokemon to a Stadium game. I forget the details why but there's some reason that n64 cartridge saves are almost impossible to be lost.
@youtube-kit9450
@youtube-kit9450 2 месяца назад
Gen 2 has the internal battery because of the clock and days, thus it runs out iirc after like 15 years. Since there's no need to keep track of stuff like that in gen 1, it keeps saves for way longer.

10:11 If I remember correctly, blacking out in the wild Pokemon battle in this situation causes the game to instantly put you in another, glitched wild encounter when you reenter the area. This is most famously used in front of the mandatory Bug Catcher in Viridian Forest to acquire a level 1 Nidoking that, upon leveling up, jumps straight to level 100.

Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Scott, cont: Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Rage, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. Because they were holding on to something. Rage: What are we holding on to, Scott? 45:29 In gen 1, there are 65536 possible trainer IDs, so the odds of getting one that matches the event Magikarp are 1/65536. The average number of resets happens to be equal to 1/p, which is 65536 resets on average. At about 51 seconds to start a new game and check your starter's ID at 4x speed, this would take about 38.7 days of resetting nonstop to get a trainer ID that matches the event Magikarp's ID. Fun fact, in gen 3 onwards, there is a second 5 digit secret ID with another 65536 possible values, so the odds of generating a new save that matches an existing pokemon's trainer ID + secret ID in gen 3 would be 1 in 4,294,967,296. At about 24 seconds (at 4x speed) per reset to check trainer ID in Pokemon Sapphire version, this would take about 3,269 years of resetting to get a new game with the same trainer ID and secret ID.

So you can either Dragon rage or struggle. Pokémon Stadium 2: if you can grind up a team to beat the game there was a move reminder. But I remember the game being insanely hard I’m not sure if this is against the rules: grinding levels in GSC after you have all the badges for obedience just to speed things up for you

There was actually a way to relearn moves in Generation 1/2. It required a N64 and a copy of Pokémon Stadium 2. If you beat the Elite Four in the gym leader castle, you get to reteach a move to a pokemon that you picked on your team.

There is also the time capsule which allowed the transfer back of Magikarp that know Bubble from Gen 2. That could be an interesting video idea, Kanto reruns of Pokemon sent back with new moves from Johto.

At some point in your run I pictured this unhinged trainer challenging gym leaders with just a Magikarp of all things, getting whooped, and then going off to train the fish wherever possible. So, the thing with this Magikarp is that it thinks it's some kind of prodigy because it knows dragon rage and so thinks it's too good for this geek and proceeds to act on its own judgement, sometimes taking a nap mid-fight and so getting himself knocked out, after which the wild pokemon knock _the trainer_ out. The guy wakes up to an outraged nurse Joy for the umpteenth time and heads off to train the unruly fish, who gets increasingly more disobedient as it gains the tiniest amounts of exp. *How was this not a first season episode?!*

I haven't started the vid properly yet, but I gotta say now, I am so glad you did this, I commented it a few times and hoped you'd do a vid like this, can't wait to see how it goes. I have just finished the vid, oh my Lord Helix that was rough, that was a male wailord breeding with a skitty rough. I feel so bad for you that you couldn't do it with your rules, I was thought you could, maybe another day in the future. so glad you mentioned the Gen 2 Magikarp with Bubble, maybe try that next. Also save you a bit of time, add Weedle and Katuna to impossible, JRose tried with Weedle, can't be done without 1 in a several trillion luck

I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but in ever generation of pokemon games. Trade pokemon all gain extra ex points. That's why it keeps saying "Rage gained a BOOSTED (xxx) EXP. Points."

hi scott! this video and jrose's recent weedle video gave me an idea for a race you could do with other players that i think has the potential to be fun - everyone starts with a really weak pokemon that can't learn TMs / HMs like weedle or magikarp but they're allowed to hack a single additional move onto it at the very beginning. it forces an interesting choice: do you pick a STAB move? a coverage move? a boosting move? a healing move? it would be fun to see what different players' intuitions are about the single most useful move to hack on are and then the race would be an opportunity to put those ideas to the test. could also be an interesting opportunity to potentially see rare non-TM moves that don't have wide availability put to good use like recover.

I was gonna say that this Magikarp “failed” it’s way to victory. By being so pathetic, everyone felt bad for it, but, by being trained by Scott, this Magikarp “Raged” to victory.

There’s a magikarp that was able to have bubble from an event in NYC in the gen 2 games. You would technically be able to transfer that back to gen 1 and in theory have a magikarp with tackle and bubble. I wonder if that would be able to complete the game without items.

Would you have a higher shot at using Dragon Rage through Disobedience once your level starts to get up there? Not that it'd be liable to help all that much, the retrain without Disobedience proved that this was kind of hopeless from the start. A rerun with Tackle and without Splash could also be interesting, simulating the use of the Gym Leader Castle from Stadium 2 that the other comment mentioned and Move Deleter from G/S/C.

To have the same trainer’s ID as a event in GEN1 is 1/65536 Trainer can have a id from 00000 to 65535 (max unsigned integer in a 16-bits) and a left over from having Pokémon game being custom for each play through

Magikarp was struggling all the of the run. But I bet that every trainer in the game is reacting like Oak did,(darn Magikarp..) behind the scenes. Because that fish is so useless(even after using x items and healing items) that even the gen 2 pokedex entry ia stating this, so being able to do that after 2, intense weeks, with a sub 9 hours time, is more then incredible. 😊👏👏I adore you even more after that, because completing that challenge was probably taking a lot of time, and some incredibly strong dedication. 😉 But I do think that you could do some blackout training, but you'll have to do that in an efficient way. You could buy tons of healing items, and x items, that you'll think that you're going to need before you do that, then you could have like less then 100 poke dollars, and then whenever your doing that kind of training you could gain more experience point, and that could save a bunch of time. 😊So, even if your money is getting halfed everytime, you'll be left with 0 poke dollars, so when you do win the fight you gain money. 😁So keep that in mind, for your caterpie/metapod run.

Funny thing about obedience. As a kid messing around with the Missingno. glitch. And you know catching over level 100 Pokemon. There was an in game trade for Nidorino for Nidorina. And I happened to catch a level 140 something Nidorino. Went and traded it off to get my level 140 something Nidorina. The kicker was, even though I had all 8 badges, it didn't obey.
