Magneto didn't need to rage out in total anger because he had so much conviction in the truth of what he was saying i honestly really hated this movie but i loved this scene, because it was yet another powerful example of the truly unique friendship that Charles Xavier and Erik had for each other
You seem to forget Erik deliberately antagonised the situation between Charles and Jean. He may not have known she would kill him (I think he did by the line here about Charles ‘having’ to die) but he certainly wanted Jean to incapacitate the crippled friend of his.
@@matthewschwartz6607 he never did that, he is making this up, Erik was actually talking to both. 1- Charles to stop forcefully controlling jean's mind or she'll kill her. 2 - Jean to realize she can control her power and just need his "guidance". It was charles own fault, he didn't stop even when she was going full psycho.
@@niks660097 Charles couldn't exactly let Jean go and become unstable. He had to give his best shot at getting her to restrain that power, even if it meant his death. If Eric hadn't been there to antagonize their relationship and increase her feeling of being "controlled" by Charles, then she might have backed down and let him in.
I really like how Magneto says "our dream", goes to show that even though Charles didn't directly support him, Magneto knew that he was never against him
The only difference between the 2 of them was that Charles was the idealist who believed in coexistence and Erik was the Realist who understood that coexistence was impossible. But regardless they both fought to protect their own kind which is why neither of them ever once tried to kill each other. Old Friends till the end.
@@Phantom-ZER0coexisting is not impossible it’s just people and ideals who stand in the way of making the dream impossible. If something came to earth and threatened everything on the planet that would be the thing to unite both sides as they have a common goal and enemy
Magneto: “Boy, even if you had the chance, he’d leave you wearing diapers and singing Disney princess songs for the rest of your life. And that’s if he was feeling merciful.”
I mean, Charles is an insanely powerful telepath, but since a special helmet is capable of masking your presence from him, any assassin with one could fairly easily take him out if they got close enough. Hell, in Marvel Ultimate Alliance, if you choose to save Jean instead of Nightcrawler, then Mystique does exactly that, sneaking into the X-Mansion and murdering Charles in his sleep.
@@alearnedman You can applie that logic to any one realy. Once Magneto’s location was know nothing stoped a sniper with a plastic weapons from nailing him in the head.
They both have the same goal. They want mutants to live in a world where they are free and cherished rather than hunted and persecuted. The difference is that Xavier believes that mutants and humans can co-exist peacefully, while Magneto believes that humans will never accept mutants and peace will only come if all the humans are exterminated. (And to be fair, he's not entirely wrong. As a Jew who lived through the Holocaust, he's seen firsthand the horrific lengths to which humans will go to destroy those they do not see as being fellow humans. What he's failing to see, however, is that by not condemning that same kind of hatred among mutants, he will one day see mutants turning on each other over some new differences.)
They were best friends that had major difference on how they viewed the world. He never wanted charles to die. He even said my only regret. Magneto is a guy who should have a handful of regrets even from failure. But he names this his only failure. When charles died you could tell it's not what he wanted. He wanted to show charles a new world not kill him with another mutant that he raised as a child
At any moment Charles Xavier could have brainwashed Magneto into deleting himself, and at any moment Erik could have put a knife in Charles Xavier's heart. The fact that the thought never even crossed either of their minds made this the best hero/villain relationship in any superhero film.
@@donovanhouse9584 Hence Magneto’s ability to kill Professor X but he never did. Also throughout the trilogy and prequel films Magneto doesn’t have the helmet on many occasions.
I think Professor X showed his respect for Magneto when in X Men First Class, Charles telekinetic held Shaw still for Magneto to kill him even through he had the helmet on.
@@matthewschwartz6607 Magneto is almost the opposite of Doom personality wise especially when dealing with their opposite foe. Yet both are the most charismatic villains in marvel.
Not one time has Magneto said anything selfish or bad about Professor X. It just shows that despite their differences and differences in life, they truly and genuinely both cared, loved, and respected each other. You don’t find many villains who know how to express their feelings and hearts.
Magneto saw Charles as someone who gave mutants a home and a purpose that wasn't for war but as living beings, what eric he really wanted for them to be if humans didn't exist. He never hated charles for helping mutants live in peace, he hated him wanting mutants to coexisting with the people that murdered their kind.
It wasn’t exactly hatred. It was more like disappointment. Like the kind of disappointment one would feel if their friend did something that soured their friendship. Something that wouldn’t end it but at the same time nothing would ever be the same
Damn, THIS is why you hire Ian McKellen. 30 seconds and he stole the show. Also Pyro is hilarious, can you imagine what Charles would have done to him?
I dare say that it is more than that.. I always felt that the implication - especially in Magneto's "Days of Future Past" outburst - was that he truly felt that Xavier should be the one leading them to peace and prosperity. That Professor X was ultimately the best suited for it. He was frequently hurt and frustrated by his "brother" trying have his cake and eat it too at the cost of mutant dignity (more often than not). Erik's darker impulses were usually tamed by being assured that Xavier had things in control and he was putting his fellow mutants first where it mattered most.
What I love is that they hold true to Charles and Erik being based on MLK and Malcolm X, respectively. It's said that Malcolm was very critical of MLK's message, but still respected him as "a fellow leader of our people".
Magneto and Xavier were never enemies. They grew up differently. And even in the darkest moment, they respected each other. And Pyro, what a douschebag. Glad he got his ass kicked cold!
Gotta realize Magento isn't just some villain looking to cause chaos. He's a holocaust survivor. He knows first hand how it feels to be hated and hunted. He's just trying to prevent that same fate for the mutants.
It always struck me as odd though how he was willing to kill *all* non-mutants, which would have to have included many holocaust survivors who suffered the exact same atrocities he did.
He wasn't just some holocaust survivor. He was also a *mutant* which would make him even more separated from humanity other than other mutants who understand him.
he's an egomaniac, he's always going to underestimate the skills and abilities of others just because he can control fire - keeps forgetting he can't even summon that fire.
This is why Magneto is the best comic book supervillain/anti-hero of all time: He’s not evil. He’s not even a bad person: He’s simply someone who just doing what he genuinely believes is in the best interests for Mutantkind.
Well he is kind of evil if he wants to kill normal humans lol . Its like saying stryker is not evil when even he wanted to do same what Magneto does lol
He is evil in most versions. He is brutal in his violence and ruthless in his aggression. He will kill anyone that isnt a mutant or a jew with little remorse in a lot of versions, and in most others he simply wont do anything for non-mutants or non-jews. It isnt the motivations that determine if your evil, its your actions. And what Magneto does goes far beyond doing harm for the greater good.
And in the end, he’s ultimately proven right, in the film Logan, the humans still feared mutants and still wiped them out through genetically modified food.
Please. In what universe would this welp Pyro be able to put even so much as a scratch on Charles Xavier. The professor would put him into place without lifting a finger.
First Charles would fry Pyro's brain not to kill him but to teach him a lesson then he would call Magneto *Pyro tried to kill me Erik, I defended myself, he is currently in the infarmary* The Phonecall wouldn't have been even ended and Magneto would have arrived in record time to collect Pyro and the rest is up to imagination but I don't we would ever see Pyro again
For all the inconsistencies the franchise may have, Magneto's characterization has always been stellar. Tiny bits like this speak a lot about how much care came into crafting his character.
I loved this bit so much. Usually with theses types of dynamics (villains who used to be friends with the hero and the hero hangs onto hope that the villain can be redeemed) it feels one sided but this is one of those moments which prove that Magneto cares as much for Charles as Charles does for him.
Brothers to the end. I genuinely believe the two would never have harmed one another directly. They may have been on opposite sides, but they were always friends.
This is why I love magneto. Even though he’s an antagonist, he has good reasons to oppose the human race and he never saw Charles Xavier as his enemy, only his friend that opposed him. He never wanted him dead
All those years wasted fighting each other to have a precious few of them back despite their differences they were still best friends since the beginning🤝🏻.
And that is why this version of Magneto is my favourite. Casting Ian McKellen is one of the greatest choices Fox ever made He always saw Charles as his equal not his enemy, he was his friend and brother. I think Erik took a moment after he took Jean and before this moment to grieve.
It's ironic that his group was called The Brotherhood of Mutants, when the only person he considered to be his real brother was the only person he couldn't convince to join his cause, but yet he respected and acknowledged him even past the end.
One of the Best Things about Magneto is that he didn’t saw the Professor just as a Friend and Rival but more Importantly he was an Equal and a Brother.
0:18 Wow its parts of the movie like that are the ones that make you still have respect for even the guy on the opposing side like Magneto-despite everything and that they were at odds in their views of the world and mutant kind versus humans, we see here that magneto still has a great deal of respect and honor toward the efforts of his old friend Charles Xavier, in the wake of what he’d witnessed as being his old friend’s sudden apparent demise in his eyes.
Respect to that fact that while Charles stood in the way of magnetos goals, magneto would never resort to killing him because of what he’s done for mutants and Charles would never resort to using his powers to control him. Mutual respect from opposite sides of the board.
Xavier and Eric loved one another as true brothers. They never wanted the other to hurt or to be hurt and would always be there to defend one another. They were the same ideal on a different side of a coin. True brothers to the end.
Our society seems obsessed with anti-heroes but were rarely, if ever talk about anti-villains. Of anti-villains, I believe Magneto may be the best overall example.
Yeah seriously. An anti villain being somebody who is clearly evil but has their own moral code. Magento being a good example but also Deathstroke in DC. Like he'll complete a mercenary contract but will try to not kill civilians or other innocents if he can
@@Spongebrain97 Slade also keeps his end of the bargain even after tricking kid Wally and stealing he gave Wally an option to fight him stating if he wants to fight on an equal ground against a trained assassin and let him go (even though he knows he will try to stop him) because he promised kid Wally he doesn't want to kill anyone just save his own son
I really love how despite their differences in method, Xavier and Magneto were never truly enemies at all. They just had too many disagreements to be true allies.
Pyro: 'I would have killed the professor if you had given me the chance.' Magneto: 'Bitch please. You'd be braiding your own hair and playing with dolls thinking you're a 5 year old little girl before you got anywhere close to that. And that's if you happened to find Charles in a good mood that day. Sit your lame ass power down and be grateful I let you stay in my brotherhood at all.'
In one of the video games a mutant said the same thing Magneto told the mutant that "Charles Xavier would've shut down your mind before you even had the chance to act"
Magneto and Xavier did share the same dream for their kind. But as time went by they had different ideas for the future that neither one of them agreed with. Even though they went down different paths. Magneto still had respect for his old friend.
It really is one of the best character relationships that Magneto and Charles Xavier will always see each other as friends. No matter what happens, no matter how far their paths lead them apart, they know the other is fighting tooth and nail for the same goal and that love and respect for each other is immutable in their minds, as is their will to fight for their beliefs. It’s not just consistent, it’s important. It’s half of what makes each character so endearing.
It’s scenes like this that are the reason why I love Magneto as a character! Him and Charles may have been on opposite sides in terms of their beliefs, but killing Charles is a line he’d never cross cause of how much he valued their friendship. The fact that Pyro would even mention he’d kill Charles if given the opportunity truly disgusted Erik!
Charles and Erik are the perfect examples of, you have the correct argument, you’re just arguing for it the wrong way. Which is something that is so common now.
I actually liked Pyro, but when he talked about killing Professor X, I almost outright belly laughed. He actually thinks he could've pulled that off. He might have had a chance in Logan, where he's sick, for example, but not here, no.
I’d say Pyro displays the trope of Evil Cannot Comprehend Good pretty well here. He believes that killing Charles Xavier would make Magneto happy, when, in truth, Magneto still loved Charles, even when they were on opposite sides. The idea that enemies could still be respectful to each other and not want each other dead was something Pyro couldn’t comprehend.
I love that there’s a feeling of him mourning Professor X in this moment. Up until I saw this you aren’t given much of a hint of regret then you see it here on display
Despite, they different views of the world, the two did truly still care and had respect for each other while, secretly maintaining a strong hand of friendship in their wars against their own brethren.
In the second film when Striker drugged Magneto and made him talk about the secrets of the school he felt horrible about it. His apology was sincere. Magneto is one of my favorite "villains". He has more layers to his character and it's completely understandable why he believes in his cause.
Oooh, finally found a clip that has just this scene, probably my favorite part in the movie. I always liked to think too that Ian could play this scene more personally since he and Patrick are actually pretty good friends in real life.
Magneto said this expecting his plan to succeed. Meaning that even if he created the mutant utopia he spoke of, Pyro still wouldn't know how much Charles did for mutantkind.
After watching Xavier (seemingly) die, Magneto is obviously doing his best to not appear emotionally vulnerable in front of anyone. This is the moment where the brilliance of Ian McKellen gives us a glimpse of the true depths of the grief that he is hiding.
