This scene was one of the best in the series. You can see the pain in the Queen Mother's face. For a brief moment, she was treated normally and had a few hours of normalcy. It was something she probably cherished. Thus the downside of Royalty. Well-played.

@@odysseusrex5908 The Queen Mother was a stickler for royal etiquette and tradition although her public persona was that of the down-to-earth noblewoman. She knew how to play the crowd. It's not impossible that a scene played out like this one, but very unlikely anyone would not recognise who she was. Pearl Platt would have certainly had something to say!!!

Oh how I miss those early seasons of The Crown. I could watch these episodes every day... with all the chaos going on in the world, it's nice to just lose yourself in this world. And it's easy to do because it's just so lovely. Peter Morgan really knocked it out of the part with these earlier seasons. I pray to god he decides to do this prequel we keep hearing about. What a lovely scene this is.

@@tinavino1575 well, actually it wasn't quite like that, she remarried really quicky after her uncle-husband died, while both her children were small, and started having children that were quickly taken away but such bad secret was bound to be found, and it did. She was basically shipped off, lost touch with her daughters who were spoiled and poorly raised for the roles they were expected to play. Not the happiest story, she found love at a personal level with her new husband and children but lost her children.

Shortly after she died, I saw an interview with a member of her protective detail. He told about one time, when she was staying at Balmoral, he had accompanied her out for a hike in the woods. They happened on an American couple who engaged them in friendly conversation, obviously having no idea who they were talking to. She told them that she was from London but had, "A vacation place just over the hill." When she told them she had been coming up there for many, many years, they jokingly asked if she knew the queen. Without missing a beat, she said, "Well, I've never met her, but Dick has, frequently." The Americans were very excited to meet someone who knew the queen, and asked the nice lady if she might take their picture with him. She was happy to do so. Dick persuaded them to also have their picture taken with the nice lady. After saying their goodbyes, as the Americans walked on down the path, Queen Elizabeth remarked, "I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they show those pictures to their friends back home."

You really have to look it through the lens of people of that time. A widow really didn't have much desire in the 40s 50s and 60s to be remarried after spending so much of their heart and soul and especially pain when you look at queen elizabeth the mother not the second she only had 17 years on the throne and she wasn't queen Victoria it's rather historic that since queen Mary came back out of seclusion she really had to re birth her entire life her home her status her position. And your right a dowager queen which is what she legally was could have had so much freedom in choosing her next partner. Alot of women in that time especially the religious ot wasn't that un heard of in both the church of england and catholism if you were a young widow with no children you beame a nun. My father who passed in 2010 and my parents were both Americans and my father made an excellent point when my mom died he was preparing to become a priest and he waa born in the 40s! He told me "if i can't have your mother i don't want another bride ill devote what ever time i have left to god" But the monarchs especially look at the crown basically a calling from god as their life the husband's and wife's are advisors and they do love them but they really do surrender their soul to the crown.

One would hope that the Queen Mother would have accepted him as a friend and invited him for a visit. Tea or a relaxing walk by the sea. Its sad to complain about the isolation of being in a special position and then when someone does treat you as a normal person its not nurtured as a special friendship. After all, she loves the house and no one is more knowledgeable of the house than the person that sold it to her. They both share the love of the house and the sea and the peacefulness of the location. But then with the royals they might have had a friendship and the public might never have known as a way to protect both their privacy.
