The script writers chose the uncle who betrayed the family and the country describing the scene. that's ironic.

There's one line in Edward VIII's death episode I really hate. Olivia Coleman says that he was her favourite uncle which seems like a bit of a kick in the balls to the duke of Gloucester who, unlike Edward VIII, was a loyal and very active part of the Royal Family until his death. I did think it was weird there was no mention of the dukes of Gloucester and Kent in the entire show, despite them having very rich histories and active roles in the monarchy. They had time for mentally ill cousins, tampongate and to make up a storyline suggesting Prince Phillip was unfaithful but not for Prince williams death, any mention of either of the dukes of Gloucester or the duke of kent becoming so at the age of 6 and his mothers cousin being prince phillip.

a fantastic narrative decision. especially considering he’s been brought to tears by his own patriotic fervor by the end of the episode

To Edward's credit, he stayed married to Wallis until his death. If they had divorced, what little shred of dignity remained in his legacy would have disappeared.

@@calistafalcontail that's an ahistorical re-justification using modern moral sensibilities. Back then, the marriage prospect alone was enough to raise a constitutional crisis - Nazi sympathies were far less scandalous.

Yes but she was very unhappy. But I believe she felt like she couldn’t leave because he’d given up the crown for her. Evidently a huge gesture like that which felt very flattering at the time, trapped her in an unhappy marriage for life. He was obsessed with her of course.

@@pplesandoranges Some historians think the marriage prospect was a convenient excuse to get rid of him due to concerns about the pro-nazi stance, others think the pro-nazi concerns reinforced the decision to insist on abdication after it became clear Edward would give up the throne for Wallis. When Kathleen Kennedy aka "Kick" married William Cavendish Marquess Of Hartington in 1944, her Brother Joe thought he would have some sort of royal title. He didn't get it and sadly he died four months after their marriage as did Joe and both died in fighter pilot missions.

The British monarchy often feels like an elaborate costume party where the guests haven’t quite realized the theme has changed. Clinging to centuries-old traditions, it’s as if the royals are still living in a world where hereditary privilege is the norm and lavish ceremonies are a daily necessity. While modern societies move towards inclusivity and meritocracy, the monarchy seems to be stuck in a historical time warp, dusting off rituals that are more about maintaining an outdated spectacle than addressing contemporary issues. In a time when transparency and relatability are valued, the monarchy's grandiose displays and exclusive nature might seem more like quaint relics than essential institutions.

The British monarch is hand-picked by God to reign. As the Sovereign and Head of State, this is a divine right that is consecrated in the anointment, the crowning, the oath, and the communion. God is British. And it is God who is transcended into a mortal chosen to reign supreme over his or her people. 🇬🇧 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 👑

BY god? No, by constant conquest, consolidation, the right marriages, the right decisions, and politicking. They failed once during the 17th century, and they can do so again. They have seen their cousins fail many times and know they need the idea of being godly chosen yet with the people, yet so far to keep the power. You miss the point of the scene, its the pageantry that helps keep it going. Not some divine power created that conception.
