The odd thing is that Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons was EXTREMELY well educated, almost abnormally so for a female born where, when, and who she was. Why did she neglect her children? Did she think the Windsors were genetically stupid? Or was it some sort of warped "tradition"? A function of the war? Just bad parenting?

I guess she would’ve had to defer to her husband’s wishes on that, and defer to the royal household after he became king and Princess Elizabeth became the heir. I’m only speculating, but hopefully someone with more knowledge on this subject could contribute

She was a woman of a rather obscure noble house in Scotland. She expected to marry some obscure title gentleman and have children that would eventually be sort of upper-middle class nobility in a world that was becoming more modern and it was not uncommon for nobles to be working adults of business etc. She thought her education was sufficient as she was expected to housekeep and be a lady but also have enough knowledge that she was still on par with a mildly educated common person. She stopped at O levels i believe which is really basic maths, english, sciences and some history which her family as nobility would be more educated on. Nothing much beyond that. But when the abdication happened, her and Bertie probably thought it would benefit Elizabeth to be taught MORE important things like the constitution and how to be a lady cos as Queen she'll have to sit and smile and host people. Not be a minor noblewoman who probably will marry a man who runs a business and is a noble of some rank and she'll run his household and raise his children and maybe get a small part time job for funsies. While still being a sovereign who basically agrees to everything Parliament does. They didnt think she would need to be more educated than that. Probably a mistake cos Elizabeth's general knowledge was lacking. But thsi is also the Royal family who is so out of touch that they thought Margeret's beau was not suitable despite how Tony Jones turned out to be and forcing Charles to marry a woman so young and green that she was basically just chosen cos she's pretty and she was born with the right family name.

@@KoiYakultGreenTea She was educated by governesses at home and then sent to school--which was unusual. She passed the O levels (like a US HS diploma) with merit and at 13--3 or 4 years earlier than normal in both GB and US. Any further education would have been disrupted by WWI. I saw a program on "American Princesses". One of the women interviewed about British heiresses of the time spoke about her aunt who was "educated" by a governess who walked the girl around the garden, having her introduce a new topic of conversation at every large bush. Evidently the most important thing the student could learn was how to deal with boring or silent guests at a dinner party.

@@csm92459 yes she was more educated than usual but it wasn't wwi that stopped it. That's just the max they could go for a woman of her time and station. And I aw that woman was the inspiration for violet in Downton Abbey. But yes basically that's the extent of their world. Hosting and raising children. Elizabeth expected much the same of her own daughter. And then when abdication happened they sent her to Eton college for lessons in constitution.

From what I have read over the years, the Queen Mother always thought herself above her daughter. She kept jewels that belonged to the Queen for years, when my law and tradition they were Queen Elizabeth's

I’m glad she realized it. I would expect more when you have the finance, time and the position…so basically her mother say you are raised to be a green plant in a « jolie » pot and smile darling! Of course, it altered her self confidence. Lucky her, Philips is as there to push her and he is always her ironic stone.

If I remember correctly I watched a video on Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary of Teck thought she should have a better education but the queen mother said no and didn't progress her daughters educations.

You know, all these years later and we do have an educated man who is the King now. His son, the current Prince of Wales, is college educated as well. I guess we'll see if him being educated as he has, and involved in many kinds of projects that are meant to have positive environmental and social impact, actually helps that much. It might not. As the sovereign, the titular head of state, it isn't up to him to create the bills that go through Parliament or set the policy. He can make his views known to the Prime Minister but the Prime Minister doesn't have to act on any advice given to him by his King. The late Queen's Prime Ministers didn't have to listen to her either. All she had a right to expect was to be informed and that's it.

Yes but just because that’s how she reigned doesn’t mean other kings and queen can’t do there own thing the queens grandfather King George v did and so did her father he doesn’t have to do what his mother did and sometimes the sovereign does know best he wears the crown he’s crowned in an abbie anointed by god a prime minister is just elected like a president it’s the sovereign stop trying to diminish the power of the crown because your are anti monarchy and grow up they can make and do decisions they just have advisors to advice them what to do in situations

He can certainly use his position to raise awareness and advocate for causes. And there's nothing stopping him from raising private funds for environmental and social impact. That's what the Prince's Trust does now.

The parents should have send Elizabeth to a top ivyleaque college, money was no object. Had the queen attended college, she would have made a damn good lawyer or a professor at a university and spoken five languages 😮
@michaelplunkett8059
@michaelplunkett8059 6 месяцев назад
She did 3 languages - French and German. Did war work instead of sociology. Her father thought travel, life exposure and on job training would do it gradually, but he died too soon. Her mother thought being Queen was like her own position and she'd received a similar background. Problem was, QM was a consort and QE2 was the reigning monarch - 2 VERY different jobs. Would be nice to have QM point out "your father only did 1 year at Trinity College".

Shouldn’t the Queen Mother bow when The Queen enters the room?
@saladspinner3200
@saladspinner3200 7 месяцев назад
She should curtsy if she were on her feet. But it is not expected of a lady to stand up when someone of higher rank or a man enters the room.
@enzodemarchi5990
@enzodemarchi5990 6 месяцев назад
That's her mother, Queen Elizabeth may have been THE Queen, but the QM was still her mum, and that ranks any sovereign title in privacy. In fact, a lot of decisions were made by the Queen Mother like forbidding Charles to mary Camilla and the arranged marriage with Diana

It just shows what queen mother thinks about Windsors and she thinks of herself as a wise women. Sorry to say this but queen mother wanted to control the heir her daughter and she very well did it all through lilibets life . The queen was more capable and wise than queen mother thinks . Thank god queen realised it and acquired knowledge wisdom and remained a down to earth kind person just like her father ❤ .queen mother is responsible for most of her daughters problems she interfered in every thing and scolded queen for everything and even she never hesitated to interfere in queen marriage life. Queen so obedient and loved her mother and did took wrong decisions because of queen mother😢 I hate this women who thinks herself as wise and degraded my lilibet 😢😢in real life also she is not a nice women but a women who wants to control everyone and loved luxury life rude and hated if people never recognise her .

@@jdcienfuegosThat's fiction, do you have proof she didn't like to bow in real life?
@jdcienfuegos
@jdcienfuegos 5 месяцев назад
@@enzodemarchi5990 I don't have any proof right now she didn't want to curtsy to her daughter, but it's widely known that QM retained a lot of the Queen's jewels, for example, and didn't pass them to Elizabeth until her death, which can tell you something about how she could feel about being outranked by her 25 years old daughter. On the other hand, it is said that Queen Elizabeth never expected her mother to curtsy, so that can also tell you that she rarely/never did (mainly in official public ceremonies)

Well, it's not like being Queen and queening around is a 24/7 job. She's no EMT, startup entrepreneur, investment banker or corporate lawyer. The Queen had plenty of time as a young adult to bring in tutors of the most renowned universities to give her tailored lessons on politics, international affairs, science, technology. Going to her mother to blame her for a deficient education at 25 or 26, when she had all the power of the monarch, is a bit childish and immature, not going to lie. (Granted, I know this is fictional.) She just needed to attend fewer operas and ballets, fewer family functions, do nights with only 5 to 6 hours of sleep, and hit the books and write papers for 2 to 3 years. That's literally what college is. The Queen would've gathered an adequate, and possibly a great, education in this manner.
