Pretty stellar way to do a sequel when you think about. Dirty Harry comes out and you got people who think all it's about is how a "loose cannon" cop with a big gun, ignoring rules and procedures can get more done than by the book methodology, and those people say, "yeah we need more cops like Harry who ignore the rules." And then the sequel goes "Okay, meet the antagonists."

Harry followed the law and rules for the most part. He just didn't like the politically correcting of everything by bureaucrats. He made a few mistakes in a couple of the movies, but he still worked within the system and within the law as he stated was his intention. He could still do more good within it.

Magnum Force basically addresses the "fascist" accusations targeted at Dirty Harry. And this movie is right: Harry may not follow general police procedure, with his constant defiance of superiors, and carrying a very powerful handgun. But Harry NEVER killed a criminal without them threatening him or other people first, even in the first Dirty Harry movie.

Kriss Delaney Nah, people have been saying this for every single decade, and in fact for several centuries. Older people - as in the Greatest Generation - considered the 1960's and 70's totally degenerate and disgusting. Nothing was sacred anymore they said. People who had been young in the 1890's considered those the "golden era" where new innovation made life easier and people believed wars would never happen again while the 1920's were just shocking and tasteless with their vulgar styles etc. A Greek playwright working for the Roman emperor Augustus openly told him at a party:"People say that things aren't as they used to be. You know what, they never were." I do however agree that Lalo Schifrin's music is fabulous. We do live in a sad era in which some bombastic hack like Hans Zimmer is considered a "great composer" of movie scores. Everything sounds the same and nothing stands out.

The message in this film is still relevant today, more than the first Dirty Harry was. 'If the courts worked properly' is a statement that Harry has to ponder, a natural continuation from the original film that now looks at how Harry deals with vigilante's in the force other than him.

Very sobering, mesmerizing and chilling scene here. Harry Callaghan is in many ways no different than these men in terms of his attitude towards the ineffectiveness of the justice system. However what separates Harry from these soulless assasins is that Harry is a centrist. Always has been. While he holds disdain for the current corrupt and inept system he is still a man of principle who DOES believe in the law. His violence is done during the course of doing his job which is to serve and protect. These men by killing a fellow police officer previously, have no such moral guidelines or constraints and kill according to what they perceive to be justice. David Soul owns this scene and comes across pretty darn convincing as the chieftain of this death squad. The darkness of the parking lot and the shadows only add to the disturbing eeriness of this moment. Superb cinematic piece here.

Really intriguing how their shades and helmets totally shield everything but their stoic expressions -obstructing the view of eyes, hair and other more human traits that typically are readily identifiable. It completely masks their motives and leaves the judgement of the merit/flagrance of the collective killings ride on the viewer . Its also rather spooky how bug-like they look - specifically with the aviator shades. They have this deep, celestial blackness that is so black it can only mirror back the light it swallows momentarily.

Harry goaded Scorpio into trying to kill him, and it was still an even chance because there was a 50/50 shot that maybe Harry's gun was out of bullets after all and Scorpio might have been faster. It wasn't just an execution in cold blood, which is what marks the difference between Harry and that trio of murderers wearing badges.

Most cops (minions) are content forcing people to follow the decrees of politicians. Most cops are crooked by default since they are part of the theft (taxation) and kidnaping (arrest) of those who resist the decrees of politicians. Those "dirty" cops are different. They are acting like homicidal politicians who do the dirty work themselves instead if hiring goons (cops) to do the dirty work for them. Governments murder more people than any whack job acting alone or with friends ever have. And we let them.
