Here is what I have to say. Mahler is my favorite composer by a huge margin. This is one of my top four favorite Mahler symphonies, the other three being 2, 6, and 9. Over 45 years spent with it, I've listened to everybody perform it, hundreds of times: Bernstein, Horenstein, Levine, Barbirolli, Boulez, Haitink, Abbado, Adler, Abravanel...you get the picture. Hundreds of times. I've never heard this symphony before in my life. Touched by the hand of Mahler. I am NOT KIDDING.

Ahhl The memories. The first time I heard this live - American Symphony in Carnegie Hall, Catherine Comet, conducting - our son was a "Bim Bam Boy" as a member of the American Boychoir (RIP). I can still see and hear it in my head after all these years. It was his first Mahler 3rd of many, including the CD by Ozawa and the BSO with Jessye Norman. How many years ago! That little boy is now 38 with children of his own. And he still knows and loves all the symphonies of Mahler. This performance is one of the best I've ever heard, and I heard the Mahler 3rd several times in my decade as a classical music reviewer for a large metropolitan daily in the '80s and '90s.
@garyshelton3014
@garyshelton3014 3 года назад
If you could, ask your son for us: as a child performing this work, did you sense how monumental it is? And did you feel old enough for it? I ask because the emotional swirl Mahler creates in No. 3 has always seemed almost too much to take, and it occurs to me that it should be rated PG-13 for (intense adult content or something).

Yes, this is one of the solo details in this work. Mahler did not wrote jazz-music, but especially in this symphony the instrumentalists are also intended to engage in relevant solo passages. For me is this one important fact, which makes Mahler's music so fantastic and entertaining.

He had a hard time with it and rewrote it more than once. Originally the song that now ends the Fourth Symphony was supposed to be the seventh movement of this already overlong symphony. When Mahler decided that the Adagio finale was sufficient, he added the loud bombastic ending heard hear. He was much more successful with the beautiful quite endings of the 9th and especially the 5th movement of the 10th Symphony.

i was word processing through much of the symphony; when i sensed the last movement was going to end, i changed to watch the orchestra, full page. i wanted to hear those tympani beats, which i think make the ending of this symphony one of the greatest endings. then the conductor ended the symphony, looking up, as if transigured, which he surely was. then he bowed his head and put his hands together in prayer. that is when i burst into tears, as the audience had remained silent until that point, before roaring to life. i love the way this orchestra's conductors call out each section for applause, as well as the whole orchestra. the first time i listened to the symphony, without watching it, i was sort of unimpressed. unimpressed no more. absolutely splendid!

Nothing short of an absolutely stunning performance. As a classically-trained pianist and media producer/engineer, dissolves rather than almost any cuts in the final movement would be my preference to truly accompany what is being heard.

Just awesome (perfect use of the word)! The adagio ending made the hairs on my neck stand up. Thank you Frankfurt Radio Symphony and A O-E, one of my favorite conductors!

This wonderful performance is so emotional and heart-wrenching. I have no idea how the players keep their composure to create such a performance.

Yes! The silence was "louder" than the subsequent applause. Orosco-Estrada conducted the audience silence so effectively.

Very effective. Reminded me of my first concert in our high school orchestra; we played the 4th movement of Tschaikovsky's 6th, and our director held a similar silence at the end -- stunning. On RU-vid there is a video of this same orchestra / conductor playing the 6th, and he holds the silence for 50 seconds. I would have loved to be in that audience.

I wish this performance would get issued on DVD or CD. With Jessye Norman gone, Stutzman sings the fourth movement better than anyone. Orozco-Estrada knows what he's doing too.

I loved this. I have not heard the whole work before in one performance from go to whoa. I was very moved. Some fascinating bits of orchestration. Loved Stutzmanns solo and the choirs. The conductors enthusiasm was wholly engaging and the acknowledgement at the end heartwarming. Thankyou For posting
