The Mainz Christmas market is seperated into 2 parts, though there are a number of stands in front of the main train station too. The liveliest and largest area is down around the Mainzer Dom, and includes the Wine Garden full of wine vats and small huts you can sit in. Check the reserved times that are on the outside of the vats and huts to see if you can sit inside.
You can get to the market by taking any of the regional trains that stop in Mainz at either the main station or Römisches Theater, or the S-8 or S-1. An all day group ticket from Frankfurt costs 31.90 € and is valid for up to 5 people. Even though Mainz is in Rheinlad Pfalz, you can still use a Hessen ticket or the RMV transportation system tickets to get there.
