MAJIN BUU'S SNOOZE: TOEI'S FOLLY | A Dragonball Discussion 

Majin Buu is the perfect representation of someone who uses Weight Watchers: 1. You will accept your ways. 2. You will exercise. 3. You will lose weight (Shit, didn't see that coming). 4. You will lose more weight. 5. You will become extremely fit. 6. You will get screwed over by Toei and will become fat again

For the ultimate Bait and Switch, Goku goes to Hell to get Frieza, they fight, then Goku decides "You know, I don't want you on my team" So he goes to get Babidi instead to wake up Buu. No one would see it coming.

My theory is buu is diabetic from all the sugar and candy he eats and is now in a diabetic coma.

Mr. Popo is probably pissed at Vegeta.

Toei is giving us Bluu Balls.

Just have Buu wake up. Seriously, nobody needs a real reason to keep Buu asleep. Hercule says he'll be out for two months? Oops, looks like he was wrong, Buu only needed a few hours.. BAM! Just solved the Buu asleep problem. No room for him now that Frieza's on the team? Just make Frieza reject Goku's offer! What does he get out of it, exactly? One tournament to save the universe then back to hell? If the universe goes boom. so does the afterlife. I think Frieza would rather let that happen than spend eternity being sang to and cuddled by Care Bears and Fairies. I'm pissed that Buu's going the Chi-Chi route. Frieza had the entire Namek ark, a movie, and a Super arc. We're tired of him, and the only thing I'm actually looking forward too is Frieza meeting Frost. Beyond that? I don't care. Let Buu have the limelight Toei, he fucking deserves it.

Honestly, Toei just clearly forgot everything in the Buu saga, except Ultimate Gohan. They think that we'll be satisfied by Freeza and only Freeza, even though we've basically gotten rid of any possibilities with him. And seriously, WHY NOT CELL?? He clearly had way more potential and could probably stand up against nearly every member of the other universes. But I digress. I'm disappointed in the decision of Freeza as the 10th member, but mostly because of the hype around buu. If they had just full out said that Freeza was always gonna be on the Universe 7 team, I would have been fine with it. But especially after skinny buu and everything else that has happened with him, this is a huge let down. #WakeUpBuu

My dad's actually pretty hyped that Frieza's going to make a return. And to be honest, I agree with his sentiments. Sure, it would've been cool to see Majin Buu do more things, but it doesn't have a lot of potential to really do that much in terms of the story. Frieza on the other hand? Complete and total wildcard. We don't know what he's going to do, what he's going to accomplish, or what he's gonna think once he's in the tournament (Frost is also in the tournament, imagine what would happen there). So I don't really agree with you there, MasakoX. Yeah, it's a bit lazy to reuse a tired gag, but at least Majin Buu contributed to something this arc (he won the Exhibition Match, and he inadvertently helped reinforce that Goku could lose against weaker opponents if they have a strategy). I myself can't wait for what's going to happen next.

While i am a bit sad that buu isnt part of the team, but im really excited for Frieza being part of the team, just imagine him meeting frost: Frieza: so this my counterpart from another universe and what are those did he also failed to kill few sayans? Goku: actually he was acting as a good, while being a bad one AND he actually didnt destroy the sayan home planet Frieza: Pathetic Also just imagining all the possible interactions he will bring to the team in the tournament, if Toei does this correctly, this tournament could be so damn awesome.

Honestly I think that the problem with Majin Buu is that he is too overpowered to be a good guy. How to write as a protagonist a character that 1. is basically immortal 2. can regenerate even after being turned into small pieces 3. can learn instantly other people's technique 4. can stretch and manipulate his body without limitation 5. can turn other people into candies and other objects 6. can absorb other fighters to increase his power and abilities and still maintain any kind of suspense and thrill? Buu worked well as an unstoppable chaotic evil force to reckon with, but I cannot see him as an effective main hero in terms of storytelling.

Buu falling asleep should have been the result of sabotage by one of the rival Supreme Kais.

I don't think it's all Toei's fault this time, if they wanted to do Marketing they would let Buu stay Fit and replace Roshi/Tien with Golden Frieza

If i remember correctly beerus is still training as a god of destruction, which means that are other god's of destruction of universe 7 that has died or possibly surpassed.

I'm curious, would a Senzu Bean wake up Majin Buu? Think of it like this, Senzu Beans restores energy, and so does sleep. It is basically a walking rest pill. So would feeding a Senzu Bean to a sleeping Buu wake him up?

What it bothers me in this is how easily one can put all the blame in Toei when even Toyotaro saw that coming (jeez, I wonder why, is like someone behind Toei and Toyotaro knowing this). The same was with "the Pothara retcon", all blame was directed to Toei, but when the manga needs to make the same becase reasons (Toriyama) is all good-y and "logical" somehow

The only thing I'm really tired of in Super is going away from the big plot of the episode that matters for yet another bit where Beerus and Whis are eating some delicious earth food and Whis has some foodgasms. I could take or leave Majin Buu tbh, I'm more partial to the first two parts of DBZ (first is up to and including Frieza, second is up to and including Cell, third is the rest of the series after that). I always thought Fat Buu surviving was kind of unnecessary anyway. But if he'd stayed thin, I feel that would have injected some cool new life into him as a character for me. More Yamcha, please, and let him be useful again, at least somewhat prominently like Tien and Krillin. I wonder if the whole "Yamcha is pathetic" meme that Toei is embracing in Super would have been widespread enough for them to do it if DBZA hadn't honed in on it so much? Not knocking DBZA, I love it, just wondering.

It's not fair to blame TOEI, most probably this is Toriyama's blueprint on the story. I expect the same reason Majin Buu missing out the tournament in the manga version.

I fear it's more Toriyama Sensei then Toei. Toriyama in his good stories always has had editors helping him, with no one stopping him, he now does what ever he likes and go out of control.

I don't think the reason is that they run out of ideas for majin boo.The reason it's that majin boo it's broken.He can defeat alone every single opponent at the tournament taking advantage of the "not killing allowed"Just think about it, he has infinite stamina, it's imposible to take about of the ring if he propose, he can absorb and he can transform everybody (without killing them) in candies at once.

How to make Majin Buu Sleep *TURN SUPER SAIYAN 3*

Being a Buu fan, I'm glad MasakoX is speaking up for us and our frustration over this situation!

man, really wanted to see skinny Buu. Looked really cool and maybe would have had something like super Buu if he would get really pumped but nah. just threw frieza in again

I love me some Buu, but I don't have a problem with this. Having Buu be unreliable fits in with the existing narrative of not being able to have gods solve all your problems for you, or in his case, not having indestructible bubble-gum monsters solve your problems. This isn't a story about Majin Buu, it's a story about Goku and the consequences of having the audacity to challenge the gods. We got TWO really good fights featuring Buu this arc. Let the big guy have his rest.

Funny thing is, I am not really sad that Buu is out of the tournament. I like Freeza more, and because so many people don't like it, I find it funny

Frieza actually has a lot to offer in terms of a good arc in the future. Perhaps participating in the tournament will help frieza perfect and maybe improve his golden form. And he still has an intergalactic army, it would be awesome to see the rise of the new Frieza Empire, maybe even having Frieza somehow take the mantle of God of Destruction from Beerus. Remember, Frieza was supposed to be the end of DBZ. He was the strongest being in the universe. He's also Toriyamas fav villian.

Wow. I haven't seen all of these videos, but this is the first time I've seen Masako get this worked up.

Well, the pink bubblegum monster is rather overpowered in this sort of thing once you think about it, being able to learn any move simply by seeing it once, regeneration that puts Piccolo to shame, can turn everyone into candy... I get why people want to see him in there and are triggered by him not being in the tournament, but Buu is simply too OP in his abilities for the tournament. Freezer the Cold at least makes for quite a few interesting interactions.

As far as I know Dragon Ball is a pretty popular anime, for fucks sake Son Goku is ambassador for the olympic games 2020... why do they treat the show like it's the product of the new guy in which nobody believes but fuck it, we have a time slot between 3 and 4 am to fill...

I love that we finally have female Super Saiyan and i love Caulifla too. But the way she transformed into SSJ was just BS... Heh, Future Gohan was such a bad teacher. Why didn't he told Trunks to feel a tingle in his back? I mean if the sight of death and destruction caused by the Androids wasn't enough for him to transform then a tingle would definitely do the job. Seriously though i love Super a lot, but i'm really getting tired of Toei's bullshit.

I agreed with your idea about waking him up with the dragonballs. Goku's instant transmission (which he strangely neglects at times) would help immensely with finding the dragonballs; hell, they can even use one of the wishes to restore the room of spirit and time, or make it so buu never has to sleep again, etc. I feel that the dragonballs could add a lot of exciting variables, so when you mentioned it, I was pretty pumped, since I was thinking something similar.

In my headcanon Buu sleeping is either because it is an after effect of no longer sleeping for years in that ball/cocoon thingy Bibidi put him in OR perhaps he is very slowly growing a female majin inside of him (instead of instant like in Xenoverse 2), thus requiring a lot of energy,

What annoys me about Buu falling asleep now is that Toei went out of their way to show how excited Buu was to participate in the tournament. If he was not interested and was being forced to participate then I may have bought him falling asleep.

Buu is a haxor sort of character (turning everyone into candy), so I kind of get why they didn't include him

The problem with using Buu is that unless is opponent is leagues stronger than himor if he is facing another Buu, he pretty much wins. I mean look at him, he has ridiculous durability and regeneration plus the fact that he never gets tired, its hard to give the character a compelling fight. Its not impossible, his fight against Basil was really fun but how many times could we watch Buu either Stone Wall his opponents or be a victim of the Worf effect before it gets old. Mind you none of this justifies how they are currently treating Buu but if does explain why they are so hesitant to use him.

I am disappointed that Buu isn't in the tournament, but I really do like the idea of Frieza being forced to play along with his most hated nemesis, Goku. But in the bottom of my heart, I know Buu wouldn't really matter in the Tournament of Power; sure he would get his five second of glory, but I want him to really matter. This whole tournament, imo, is just gonna boil down to Jiren vs. Goku; everyone will have their little moment but Goku and Jiren in their fight will eat up a decent bit of the Tournament, and that just disappoints me. EDIT: I think Vegeta should have been out so he could take care of Bra, and then they could have done the whole Frieza recruitment scenario. Frieza potentially being brought back to life and maybe teaming up with Frost in a later arc would be an interesting concept. Sorry, I am tired and my writing is not at its finest right now.

dang you were getting e x t r a s a l t y there at the end lol but i can't say i don't agree with you because i was raging too lol but honestly this is probably toriyama's idea and i guess i'm fine with it as long as it's executed well - or i guess i ain't mad anymore because with the spoilers i've already had enough time to grieve and be disappointed and now i'm just looking forward to see what else comes out of this so i guess this is one time i'm thankful to have been spoiled ahead of time lol. i still wish they'd stop giving my boi buu the shaft but i can understand why they did it, i mean he is pretty OP for this tournament with his healing abilities and it would make it more suspenseful (and fair) for him to be out, regardless of whether or not he gets replaced by frieza :/

My biggest irk with this is it seems they don't know what to do with Buu, but worse than that is is no one seems to have any plan about what to do with him going forward and aren't attempting to put anything out there. In other words, they're stuck in Limbo and have built a home there. Based on what I've seen, I get the impression that most fans like Innocent Buu as a character. Now, it's one thing to make him a more light-hearted and sillier character, but that doesn't have to be his one defining character trait. If the exhibition match is anything to go off of, Buu could be a very valuable fighter for everyone. Think about it, he's a god-killer with insane regenerative abilities. Even if Innocent Buu adopted a no-kill policy, he's shown he's a competent fighter given what we saw in episode 85. It's silly to relegate him to gag character as his only trait and function when it's clear there's a lot more to him. Toei et al is sitting on a huge pile of potential, yet they're throwing gasoline on it and lighting it on fire. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Spoilers from here on out---------------------------------------------------------------------- But no, let's take an incredibly cheap and tawdry plot point and exploit it for all its worth to keep Buu out of things so that we can have an excuse to bring Frieza, frickin' Frieza into the mix!I know the answer is marketing, but from an in-universe perspective, why him? Why?! Frieza is bad to the bone, and there are some characters out there who don't do so well going from villain to good guy simply because they were so enjoyable when they are so bad. Not only that, but not everyone gets redeemed, and Frieza, to me, doesn't come across as the kind of guy who would change his ways, especially when it's Goku asking him for help. Since at the time of this writing, the big moment and the entire arc as a whole has not aired yet, I'll hold my final judgements on the matter. Let's see how this plays out first.

i have a thought. this hibernation is actually something that has been a longtime coming. the reason he has been falling asleep, since universe 7 vs.9 arc, has been it is his time to hibernate. however, because he was continually awakened before he finished, it became more like a power nap. I mean come on, as humans if we go a long time without regular sleep we experience a crash that could last a day, ive done it when i was in college when i needed more time and worked through the nights. So thinking of it this way, all the times he was asleep was not because of a gag, it was hinting at his hibernation.

You know Toriyama is the one that decided to change Buu for Freeza, right?

I think one of the issues with Majin Buu and I'm not sure where I've read this or watched this, is Majin Buu's package of abilities. Buu was a character that takes a lot of punishment, never truly gets hurt and possesses the ability to absorb his enemies. These abilities are extremely problematic for a tournament scene. For one, what happens when no one's able to hurt or knock out Buu because of his magical form? It steals the thunder from the other fighters when you realize this character really probably shouldn't suffer a ring out for any reason and can't be harmed. Second his absorption package can create an entire other set of problems. If he's able to grow exponentially in this tournament and also potentially absorb all the evil of the other universes we could end up with a repeat Buu Saga. But it has to be mentioned that although I hear a lot of rage against the reuse of Frieza, he is tremendously popular and this is the one situation where we get to see Frieza fighting alongside the Heroes. The adjustment could've been made to another member of the lineup, but I think that Toriyama followed the Last-In First Out method for his team.

Story must be told... Goku nd Freeza becum frinds

The ultimate problem is that sometimes in a story you will come across a character who is "easy" to write as a villain, but "hard" to write as a hero due to their powers. Buu is an example of such a character. It's not impossible, but it requires effort. Sadly a lot of times, writers do not want to put in the effort so they come up with excuses for why the higher level being or villain turned good can't help the heroes. If the excuse wasn't sleeping, it would have been something else. Of course a good part of it is sometimes the writers want X to get the "kill" so they will find a way to keep Y out of the fight. Sure Y could defeat the big bad easily himself, but wait we want X to get the glory. "Gasp, Y was turned to stone" or "Oh no Y was sealed in another dimension" We will never see Buu do more than an occasion "example match" until everyone involved becomes willing to put in the effort to write a character like Buu as a hero. As long as they'd rather avoid the effort, Buu won't be doing any real fighting. What's sad here is they could have had it both ways. They could have had Buu enter the tournament, but also have be one of the first characters to get ringed out. After all, it's not like they promised everyone in Universe 7 would make it to the end of the fight. An early ring out would be a devastating way to start things. Granted there would be issues with that. Such as the fact it would ruin the whole "new member" thing they were going for and one might question the idea of Buu losing early, but at least it would be a change of pace. Unless of course Buu rings out because he fell asleep, trips over nothing and falls out of the ring.

Honestly yamacha has been given the biggest shaft thanks to fans reception of the character and thanks to that now even toei is making him a joke. I'm sorry but not a fan of how this character is being treated recently it's not funny he was a pretty cool character in dragon ball and early parts of z but now he's joke this needs to end. Again? We're blaming Toei again? Really? Should we forget that Toriyama was the one who had Buu excluded the first time and that he loves to troll the fans? No, we shouldn't. This is just hopping on the Toei hate bandwagon because nobody wants to say anything bad about Toriyama. This is his decision and the anime is following his outline of the story he crafted. I have no doubt about that. What's worse is you criticized them for showing the full team beforehand and said we had less reason to care because it was a foregone conclusion, and then when this curveball is thrown later in the game that throws you off (which was likely the intention the whole time) you criticize them for doing things differently to how we first thought. Nothing sort of being hypocritical. I used to watch your videos because there was much more positivity compared to other Dragon Ball channels. But now, like so many others, it's wrapped up in negativity because something doesn't happen the way you thought it would or wanted to. I can't stand to watch more of this so, good luck with your negativity and unjust blaming from here Masako.

Majin Buu? More like "Majin BOO NO ONE WANTED YOU TO DO THIS TOEI!" Also, what grinds my gears is that my friend brought up a really good point. You know what power would be useful from the Frieza's army? Ginyu. His Body Swap would be so overpowered it wouldn't even be funny. Mass chaos within the enemy lines simply by switching everyone's body's as need be. Even worse, is that it seems like Super wants to avoid everything from the Buu arc. I'll be the first to admit that it wasn't my favorite of the DBZ arcs, but COME ON. It doesn't get to do anything. What was the POINT of showing us how well Buu could fight, show him training and getting fit and ready to fight only to have this happen? Like, it's not even that the person they chose was here-- it's the fact that our time was wasted seeing all of these other I know I'm being weird, but I'm honestly hoping things go like this: Goku approaches Frieza and asks for help, and Frieza's demands are so unreasonably difficult to uphold that they decide to use someone else. Like... Dabora. Like... How did they forget this guy? The dude could spit and petrify people! Tell me you wouldn't want that power, he can spit on them, and throw them out of the ring, and it's totally *not* killing people, and he's pretty strong regardless. Another one that I had as a joke, if they really want to keep with stupid things? Launch. Yes, that's right, have Launch come back as the tenth fighter. Primed and ready to fight, and fully in control of her hair color changing and ready to fight. I'd honestly take anyone over Frieza, as I'm totally done with this: if we don't get that Beerus was the one that wanted Planet Vegeta destroyed, I'm sorry, but I might have to admit that GT > Super.

Buu didn't just fell asleep before the universe 6 tournament. He fell asleep because he never could solve the idiot test.

Toei needs to get their shit together about spoilers. I'm not sure if this is a fair comparison, but the people of the BBC who make Doctor Who are pretty much spoiler-paranoid, going as far as to give the show the working title "Torchwood" (an anagram for Doctor Who and the future name of a spin-off series), so that people couldn't find the show to spoil it. Karen Gillan revealed on TV that when you get to play a companion, you are to tell the staff of the BBC when you arrive that you're there for a show called "Panic Moon" (another anagram and a potential future spinoff, who knows?). They go through great pains to not let anything slip out. Toei is pretty successful, they could spend some effort, couldn't they? Or at least not deliberately leaking spoilers, like it seems to me they're doing...

I gotta take issue with you saying that Toei deserves all the criticism they've been getting from fans, and then going on to say "Oh well I FINALLY got my in-print issue of the manga". You can't act like the decisions the series makes are all crap and then get huffy about not being provided with content, like the manga, at the same time. agreed. Krillin "quitting" bothered me more than it did you I feel. It was pointless. Just a teaser to make you think something was happening but it gets resolved in a second. It's like those season end cliffhangers which resolve the next season in like 5 seconds. It's a cheap tactic to drum up interest.

I was so exited for buu. I mean who better to represent the universe than a being of chaos that was conceived at the beginning of time? Someone Freiza fears just as much as beerus. Someone who warped reality after having a tantrum. Someone who nearly wiped out the universe on his own while also trying to save it from himself. Someone who would later go on to create his own species. It's such a waste of potential.

I like Mr. Satan saying that Buu often only needed a few seconds of sleep. It reminds me of "Quick Sleep" from the Xenoverse games, a Majin-only technique that, when held active, makes the Majin in question take a nap for a short while to regain health.

I think Buu will (and it is hinted at in the exhibition match) be picking up evil traits again and Uub will be playing an important role in getting Buu to a new level as a character. Maybe by merging Uub and Buu. I would like to think his sleeping is the hibernation where he is recharging his power.

...everyone. I mean, *everyone* was talking about the tournament's roster and mentioned endless about reviving Frieza or Cell to fight in the tournament. Did you people honestly didn't expect Toei to hear ya and make the appropriate changes. What did you people think was going to happen!?

@MasakoX Hmmm... what if Majin Buu falling asleep is a result of Toriyama's personality? You mentioned in earlier videos that Toriyama said in an interview that when fans began to predict "this is going to happen, this character will do this or that" Toriyama would straight up kill them, or make anything in his power for it not to happen. But more importantly, this might be quite unlikely, but if Dragon Ball Super is not going to rewrite the end of Z, Freezer's appearance in the anime exactly during this arc would not only make more sense, but would also be mandatory for Super's end to match Z. How about what Frieza asks Goku as his condition to join the tournament of power, is to let him ask a wish to the super dragon balls? Pheraps Frieza will ask the dragon balls for Goku and Bills' meeting to have never happened, and therefore making Goku's access to Super Saiyan God form impossible, this would only make sense if we think about the Ressurrection of [F] movie. Freezer woul have been stronger than Goku and achieved his vengeance if they never had access to Super Saiyan God. So for him, this would be the best outcome, he wouldn't mind Bills to be still around because Bill's a lazy God of Destruction and sometimes he actually agrees with him. This would save all of the Universes from destruction in the hands of Zeno, this would also prevent the whole Zamasu arc, and would also mean Frieza's failing to be resurrected (because plot convenience). It would make the perfect reboot and a plot twist we would not expect. Also keeping on mind that both movies before Super came into existence influence it greatly, Bills telling Goku about the 12 Universes (we all knew it would be a tournament, to be honest, making Goku go from Universe to Universe challenging the Gods of Destruction was something very unlikely to happen) and Frieza being stopped from achieving his goals just because Bills came into contact with the Z warriors. Pheraps Bills would sense Frieza's power and he would stop him personally without the Z warriors noticing it, since they wouldn't be able to sense the Ki of the Gods. Well it's only one of many theories, but if we think about this, it makes Frieza's appearance less annoying.

I'm sorry Masako, I like you and all, but you're really annoying me with you constantly blaming Toei for any major thing that happens in Dragon Ball Super and the sad part about this is, you're not the only one. You and everybody should know by now that Akira Toriyama is the one who created Dragon Ball Super and he outlines the story for the main arcs and lets Toei and Toyotaro fill in the gaps for the anime and manga respectively. Which means they only control HOW things happen and not what happens in Dragon Ball Super, the only scenarios that are done by Toei and Toyotaro alone are things that don't effect the main plot, e.g; all the slice of life episodes, two-parters and mini arcs in the Super anime are all fully scripted by Toei Animation (you know this as they don't appear in Toyotaro's manga adaptation).

Around the 4:58 mark you mentioned that Super Buu and Kid Buu only needed a few seconds of sleep and normal Buu needs to sleep longer. Well, if I recall correctly, Satan did say that Buu usually only needs a few seconds of sleep to energize himself, similar to the other Buu's, but every once in a while he sleeps for two months. Seems like those quick naps only last for so long before Buu needs to actually sleep. I'm not covering for Toei, I just wanted to point out that little tid-bit of info.

If I were to do Buu waking up I'd do it just randomly and lazily as him falling asleep. Something like "Oh, he just woke up", or a catchy tune come on the radio, or there was a mosquito buzzing around, or being more serious, just give him a Senzu bean.

You use a lot of terms like "we", when you should be saying "I". I'm not saying people don't agree with you, but you're doing a lot of assuming that the whole dragon ball community is following your opinion, while for me, and a lot of others I know, it is not.

I wonder if Masako realized the pun in calling the "Buu falls asleep right before a tournament" gag tired. But in all seriousness, this bugs the crap out of me. It bugged me in the Universe 6 arc, and leaves me beyond frustrated now. If it absolutely had to be done, I wish they had gone someone else to fill Buu's spot, as I think Frieza had his moment in Resurrection F. I would probably have been okay with it if they went with Cell (Goku could appeal to Cell's ego to prove he's not only the most perfect being on Earth, but all the universes) or, dipping into characters that aren't from filler like Pikkon, I think it would be awesome to add Dabura, who was only evil while under Babidi's control. HIS STONE SPIT WOULD BE SO USEFUL FOR EASY RING OUTS!

I get your gripes but it gets kinda old when you keep complaining about spoilers but you are also looking for spoilers and it is something you can easily ignore if you actually wanted to avoid. Especially during episode reviews since, well the spoilers aren't in the episodes or apart of the content itself in any way but you still complain about spoilers from Japanese TV guides or what someone said on Twitter
