Made myself one like yours for my little Makita trim router a few months ago after watching Eric. I’ve made a few signs just for friends and family. I’m still finding my feet. Very good video, nice and easy to follow. Your signs look awesome. Thanks.

Great video! I've been doing smaller signs cause I knew if I did bigger ones I would need a bigger base so it doesn't dip in the work.

Bigger is Definetly more useful on large signs! The weight can be a little more but you get used to it very quickly

I was struggling to find small pieces of thicker acrylic for a reasonable price. EBay was just the ticket!

Great video Johnathon, I made mine very similar to this, I use a cordless trim router so that I don,t have to worry about the power cord.

Second cup of coffee, watching Johnathan! Is the bandsaw new? Well explained. Cool enough outside to use my tools!

Band saw is just a few months old. It's on one of my tool reviews! Glad the heat us giving you a break. It's probable around 80 degrees here today. Hot as it gets!

Fantastic skill and inspirational videos! Ever thought about mounting a GoPro on the base plate? Would be awesome to see a close up of the routing in progress and making your own base plate means you can create enough room to mount it! 😃

Watched it back over and still not sure of the width, depth and thickness. Does anyone know,? Good video. Thank you.
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 3 года назад
This base plate was 10mm thick, and around 150 x 300mm length and width. I prefer a bigger base, more functional for outset carving. Also the thickness is important for durability and also prevents flexing

How do you cut your blank size or did you buy it that size?

This one came this size but it's very easy to cut with a jig or bandsaw

Could you tell me why you didn't centre the hole front to back ?
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 5 лет назад
I like to have a larger lip on one side than the other, allows me a little more control when doing fine detail, it's not necessary but i find when I am doing multi level cutting or doing a rising cut, it is smoother with a longer back
@paulsanders4239
@paulsanders4239 3 года назад
might be few years late but great videos does the base has to be that thick as mine is square would that matter
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 3 года назад
I prefer to make them quite thick to reduce and flex if I am doing a large area and don't break when you drop them!😁

Hi, thx for this, Do you have a specific Acrylic sheet seller on ebay you could recommend or used please?
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 3 года назад
Where are you based Sean? I got my acrylic from a UK seller, not expensive at all. I would recommend getting a piece at least 8 - 10 mm thick and i have three base plates of different lengths depending on the size carving I am doing. My three are 10 , 12 and 16 inches (25cm, 30cm and 40 cm) long and 8 inches (20cm) tall. I use the 12x8, mostly because its the most comfortable to me
