thank you and i really like to add this effect onto plaques. really makes them just a little different. go for it and keep the cuts small. I cut off more than one letter practicing this technique :)

I do the chisel effect with a 90% bit
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 3 года назад
I do that to sometimes, I like the random wavey effect the gouge brings. Also I find that the cuts are cleaner if I use the gouge, no little wispy bits

Enjoyed your video, very nice work! I have never used my router this way but I can see it would enhance my productivity immensensly. May I ask where do you pruchase your bits? and what are the various sizes that are used? Do they come in a complete set or is that really necessary? Thanks again for the info and keep up the great work, really did enjoy for sure!! Thanks August

Thank you for the informative video. How do you avoid burning the wood with going either too fast or slow in movement or router speed?
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker Год назад
each piece of wood is a bit different, i cut it out in layers so i get a feel for how the woods behaving. generally I run the router at full speed and make sure the bits are very sharp. that really helps with any burning of the wood or tear out

@Life_of_John 3 года назад
Ah, I see you mention kirschen chisels. Thanks.
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 3 года назад
You don't really need expensive gouges, most important thing is for them to be very sharp. Most chisels need a little work out of the box, but some good ones are kirchen, pfeil or flexcut. They are all good quality and mostly sharp

another great project! curious though what you chose to transfer your letters from paper to wood? Carbon paper? tracing? thanks in advance!
@JohnathonWhittaker

Hi Sean, I don't use carbon paper anymore, I use a method called lazer printer and lacquer thinner transfer. it requires a laser printer but works great. if you look at my other videos, I demonstrate how to do it a few times

I didn’t see where do I get the bits and the color for the quarter to a eight
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 6 лет назад
Hi there, since i am in the UK the bits are a bit country specific. I order the 1/8th shank bits off Amazon and eBay. They usually come.from China. As for the colour, it is Marsh spray ink, black. You can adapt this technique with any router bits you currently have. Any bit with a fine point, and straight bit for clean out

Hi there, so.for this video I used 3 different straight gouges. A number 3, 5 and 7. I have these in both the 10mm and 16 mm depending what I need at the moment and Which one is sharpest . This is a link for Kirschen chisels, definetly cheaoer options out there though www.amazon.co.uk/Kirschen-3114010-Carving-Chisel-Handle/dp/B001EGG2P6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537459405&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=kirschen+gouges&dpPl=1&dpID=313BaCbba%2BL&ref=plSrch

I dont get the burn if your just going to paint it?
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 4 года назад
Hi Mark, the burn is basically a short cut. This is pine and tends to get lots of little wispy burrs and splits. A quick burn cauterizes the wood, gets rid of all those sandy bits amd changes the texture of the wood. Gives it a slightly more "polished" look. I'm not a big fan of the burn only effect so add paint. If i was going to leave the background more natural, i would have skipped the burn and hand sanded more. Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching!
@johncoonradtjr.5141
@johncoonradtjr.5141 6 лет назад
Why burn it if you paint it
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 6 лет назад
I burn it to get all the little wispy wood hairs off, it raises the wood grain and rounds off any sharp edges a little. I generally only burn if i am using pine .Plus i like using the flame;)
