Great video. Double drawstring is at least 50% better than single drawstring. Going to make some tool bags and use the double pull string and some pumpkin drawstring lockers to keep bags closed tightly.

Thank you for explaining french seams, the way you showed us made me realise they are really simple, I've watched loads of sewing TV series and they make it look impossible! I'm going to make one of these bags for my daughter's teaching dance shoes from my left over quilting fabric ❤️

Depending on the girth of the cord, a quick way to thread the cord through is to use a straw... if the "tunnel" for the cord is big enough, a bubble tea straw would be a cinch (pun intended) to get the cord through. Put the straw in the tunnel and slide the cord through. Once the cord is through, slide the straw out. Just a helpful hint that may or may not come in handy.

I used this to do the French Seam and double drawstrung pull on a canvas laundry duffel backpack 28" X 36"; for my daughters salon daily laundry. I also added duffel bag & backpack straps. My daughter loved it; espressially carring laundry up & down 3 flites of stars on daily bases

Thank you for another great video. I have made 4 of these of various sizes with duck canvas and outside cushion fabric that I have had in my stash for awhile. I have several more to make and will be sure to try the tie in the straw tip on the next one. These bags will be used for my next camping trip. A few for all the sleeping bags, one for all the river run rafts, one for all the tarps and footprints. Great instruction. Thanks again Rob. Everyone loves my Yoga Mat carrier; it turned out so nice.

Great video! Thanks so much. I was looking for a quick tutorial on making an unlined and french-seamed gift bag to save on fabric. just knew that you probably had already made one. I used a denim fabric, which was probably too heavy, as it was very tough to get over the bulky seams at the top and bottom sides, even with my "thing a ma jig-over the hump" tool. I'll use a lighter fabric next time. I don't have a heavy duty machine that would handle that. What I was thrilled to learn from this video, that I wished I had known before, was the tip on burning the ends of the nylon cord with the blue part of the flame, not the yellow. Now, I know why my cords were sooty/black when I used them for other projects. I love the idea of having a reusable fabric gift bag be part of the gift, as well. If you have a "bodkin" that helps pull the cord through the channel, too.

I wish I'd used this tutorial last winter when I made large potted plant covers for protection against ice damage. So I created drawstring closures for the top and bottom of the cover, which created a tube. I used larger rectangles of waterproof fabric such as PUL, which was leftover from a diaper making project. But I had trouble with the drawstring closures; maybe I didn't construct the hems correctly where the drawstring goes? Anyway, it did work out in the end. Next time I make my plant covers I will follow your tutorial. Thanks for sharing, Rob.

I will be making 20 of these (yikes!) as I do not want to wrap my student's Christmas presents in paper this year. Your tutorial looks super easy to follow, though I would have liked to see how you threaded the second drawstring. Thank you for sharing this video.

all you need is a long wire. loop it around the cord, put the wire through the fabric tube hole, pull it through. so much easier & faster.

Rob I love this bag but may I ask you how can this be adapted to make a back pack. Do you have a video that would show this already.
@Javierm0n0
@Javierm0n0 7 лет назад
Tammy J personally i would install some eyelets at the two bottom corners of the bag witha bit of reinforcing material. Then the only other thing u do different is, instead of tying the cord. just at the end like he did here, u add on maybe 16 or so inches and slip each drawstring through its respective eyelet before tying it off.
@dianekingston8505
@dianekingston8505 7 лет назад
Make the cords longer and thread it in the top of the bag before sewing the sides. Sew the cords to the bottom of the bag at each side when you are sewing the seams. Then you can pull the drawstrings and use them as backpack straps. I have made several and they are so handy!
@tammy5590
@tammy5590 7 лет назад
Yes sewing them in the bottom is what I was thinking too. Thanks for the answer.

@beckeb00
@beckeb00 7 лет назад
I don't know of any unslashable fabric, but a high denier fabric is more resistant to rips and tears. (It's the same time of material that decent fabric suitcases are made of.)

@dianaspringer9462

Did you use two pieces of cord or one, cause the video shows one , but when you done it shoes two knots instead of one
@juliegathman2923

I had the same question. How exactly did he do the cords, so that when you pull on each side, it cinches? Did he put a second cord into the casings, going the opposite direction?

This construction doesn't make any sense. He could simply have sewn French seems to begin with, without turning the edges first. A bad combination of making extra work for inferior results.
@karenross3457
@karenross3457 7 лет назад
That was what I was thinking. U nless it added reinforcement. I would not call it inferior though
@paulineshaw1548
@paulineshaw1548 5 лет назад
It makes perfect sense!! If you do the side seams as French seams, you then have to make casings for the drawstring on the outside of the bag. Rob’s way is perfect for a quick, strong, unlined drawstring bag without any frills but with all raw seams perfectly enclosed😀
