Make a Lamp Terrarium (Lamparium)

Let's make a Lamp Terrarium or a Lamparium! Most terrariums are simply nice to look at, but this one is also quite functional. So if you thought that it was a waste of resources/time to make a terrarium, then maybe this is the one for you. Chances are that you need a lamp, so why not make it a Lamp Terrarium?
These are really quite simple to make and not much different than a standard terrarium, other than a few components. You could easily combine these techniques with a lot of the terrarium builds I've shown on the channel. Just in case you are new to the channel, I will link you up to some useful terrarium videos to help you get started.
Closed Terrarium Basics: • Making a Bottle Terrar...
False Bottoms: • All About Terrarium Fa...
Terrarium Substrate: • Tropical Terrarium Sub...
Springtails: • All About Springtails ...
Here's a video about rewiring a lamp. It cover more than is probably necessary for this build, but it never hurts to have more knowledge. Also, I'm not affiliated with this channel in any way, but it was the clearest demonstration I could find on the procedure.
Rewire a Lamp: • How To Rewire A Lamp |...
If you're thinking that this is an expensive project, it's really not. The Jar Light kits can get a little pricey, but the Build Your Own Lamp kits are quite inexpensive. Also this could potentially be done for little, to no expense. If you are able to find an old lamp in the trash or at a thrift store, you could dismantle it to obtain the light socket and other pertinent components and toss the rest. As promised I linked up the most inexpensive options I could find down below (not exactly the same as what I've used and not sponsored links).

I love making terrariums ever since I was a kid. My first one was an African violet inside a big wine bottle. I planted just a leaf using some sticks and the full plant grew inside the bottle. Everybody was amazed when they saw the result and astonished about how I put a plant inside a bottle. Your channel is inspiring!
@kekambas79
@kekambas79 6 лет назад
An African Violet? Wow! Is it still alive? Was it hard to maintain? How did you keep water off the leaves? African Violets are so finicky!
@krishnalelis
@krishnalelis 6 лет назад
kekambas79 it's not alive, that was 20+ years ago, I was possibly 12 or 13 yo at the time. I had it for many years at my parents', but I eventually moved out and never heard of it again. It required no maintenance but removing the weed that would grow sometimes. Once the humidity inside the bottle was balanced I didn't have to worry about the water in the leaves because they weren't actually touching the ground. I think violets go well in large terrariums, I recently got another large wine bottle (it's hard to find transparent ones, they are usually green) and I intend to make a new one.

Hey man, loving this. Thanks for all the information. Have you thought about putting Mycorrhizal fungi in your builds? If not you should look them up. They're basically symbiotic mycelia at the foundation of every ecosystem and make a plant's root system 900x bigger in terms of surface area, control pests and diseases etc. Maybe you have mentioned them before but I've only watched a couple of your videos so far. These look so good! Also reminds me, I saw a tutorial on making light up 'mushrooms' using LEDs and silicone, and I thought it would look so pretty to put those into a terrarium! I'm guessing I would have to drill a hole into the side of whatever container near the bottom and then fill in around the wire with silicone or something waterproof? Do you have any tips/experience with putting lights or electronics (waterproofed, ofcourse) inside a terrarium?

Hi! I really like this idea, but I actually want to do something like this for an aquarium, a big vase with a lamp shade on top. can you do a video on this?
@suitedzombie9846
@suitedzombie9846 5 лет назад
You could easily do that, if you tried! But it wouldn't be suitable for Fish, and probably not even Shrimp or Snails, though they might do alright in a closed environment. All you really need to do is assemble it, making sure to protect the lamp's internals, then assemble it! Fill it up with your choice of substrate, then try to pack as many live plants in there as possible! This'll make sure there is plenty of oxygen in the water to supply for any Shrimp or Snails you decide to add. For some Shrimp, Snails, and Plants, a heater might be needed. Most of these plants and animals require about 70-78°F. Next, a sponge filter is always a must, unless there are no animals in the aquarium. Sponge filters are relatively small, and only require a small tube to run it. One major must is LED lighting. If places in a sunny window, your aquarium will quickly fill up with green and brown algae varieties, making it look not too aesthetically pleasing, unless that is what you want. LED light will ensure the plants are not killed by too much sunlight, but recieve what they need to grow and stay alive. Some plants, however, require very low levels of light, if not any at all! So just be sure to do your research on which plants would be good for a small, dark environment, such as this. Lastly, smaller aquariums always require weekly water changes. This will ensure that no brown algae will grow in the aquarium. It will also ensure that the nitrate and pH levels are at a safe range. For the aesthetics themselves, I would personally add a small piece of driftwood, very small slate stones in the front of the aquarium, and smaller to mid-sized live plants, depending on the size of the lamparium. Good luck! ;)

@suitedzombie9846
@suitedzombie9846 5 лет назад
Mushrooms are surprisingly easy to grow! All you really need to do is keep them in a dark area with minimal air flow, moderate heat (like a heat mat keeping it at about 70-80°F), and high humidity (about 55-90%). You will most likely see a lot of mold growth within the first few months, but after that, you should see plenty of mushrooms growing! Or just add plenty of Springtails, Pill Bugs, and other insects to keep the mold at bay. After that, you're all set! Enjoy watching new Mushroom growth nearly every single day! They are quite fascinating! Good luck ;)
