My youngest has a rare disease called Krabbe. He received a Rare Bear about a year ago. That little bear had such a huge impact on out lives I decided to start making them as well. My oldest son picks out the fabric and I make them. We’re on bear number 16 with hopefully many more to come!

Thanks for the video. Lots of helpful tips. But trying to understand why you stuff the arms inside and then do the mental gymnastics of which way they face instead of just basting with the right-side out like you do the legs. The Simplicity instructions show that. Much easier to visualize !!

I make memory bears for hospice families and have always used interfacing. Makes the sewing easier and gives the bears more substance, I think. Not sure if interfacing is "allowed" for the RARE bears, though.

I appreciate the charity work, but this is not a very good "tutorial" for this pattern. You never even show the pattern piece or how to cut the pieces. It's a video promoting this charity project, which is fine, but it should probably be labeled as such.

Rob can not give us the dimensions. He purposely did not show the pattern because you have to buy the pattern. The pattern belongs to Simplicity. To use the pattern you place it over your fabric, pin, and cut out the pieces. Simplicity directions are pretty easy to follow. He stated he did this video to show us how to put the tag and the bottoms of the feet in the correct place.

For those of you who have made the bear, about how much fabric did you use? I’ve ordered the pattern and the feet and tag but I’d like to look at some fabric. I tried to look at the online photo of the back of the pattern envelope but when I zoom in it gets so blurry I can’t make out what it says.

Would love to make some of these bears for the kids, but the shipping to the UK cost the same as the pattern, which is a shame as it puts it out of my budget. Hope some one picks this charity here so I can make some.

I am sat here looking at the teddy bear templates. I’m a little confused about whether I need to cut the ABC set or the DE set. Is there a size difference?

Great video! I would love to give this a try, but I may need a bit more practice first. I was wondering What kind of seam guide in on your machine? Is it specifically for yours or will it work with a Brother SE 400? I've only been sewing for a few months, so Im still learning alot of the basics.

Roxanne Rand you do not have to be an expert to make a bear, but we do need to have the seams hold for the life of the bear. A deeper seam allowance can help in the curves when new at sewing. The seam guides are usually generic to machines, if you do not have an accessory screw port, you can get a magnetic guide or use blue tape to mark your seam.

Rob, the top of the food pyramid is the smallest - so I would leave that to the fats and oils. The bottom - the largest amount would be chocolate and sweets. Meat and eggs would be the next one up and the middle would be fruit, then vegetables and up next to the fats and oils would be the bread.

Can someone please help?!? I can’t figure out how I’ve messed up. My front body piece is significantly smaller than the back body piece and it doesn’t line up as shown in the video for me to sew it. I’ve double checked and I used the correct pattern pieces. I just don’t understand where I went wrong.

You are welcome to send me photos at rob@michaelmillerfabrics.com it is often helpful to see what you are looking at. I am wondering if you stitched the wrong edges when joining the front pieces? Meaning, you stitched the outside edges of the front pieces instead of the inside edges on those pieces, maybe that has caused things to not line up.

Making It Fun with Rob Appell that’s what it was!!!! I copied my pattern over to plastic pieces and when I did I inadvertently wrote center seam on the wrong side! It fixed the problem! Needless to say, I have made a new plastic piece for the body front. I really appreciate your help! Can’t wait to send in some rare bears!

The pattern from Simplicity is a little under 6 US dollars. www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/brands/simplicity/simplicity-pattern-c5461-rare-bear-sewing-pattern/ You have to buy on line and shipping is scary for a single pattern, if memory serves. After that, you only have to pay for your fabric and to mail the bear skins. If you're asking for a bear for a youngling in your life, they're free, though there is a wait list.

legs are stuffed before attaching, arms also before attachimg

this is if you are making it for yourself. if sending it you are leaving an opening in the seam for the stuffers to stuff. you don't stuff it before you send it.
