Make a Scrappy Improv Block with Me! How I Plan (and Don't Plan) My Blocks.

Improv quilting is a fun break from the more structured quilting I often do. I've been working on a series of blocks over on instagram and had several people ask about a tutorial. There really are no rules in improv quilting, so instead of a tutorial, I'm just talking through my decisions while I make a block with you all :) Its a really simple process of just deciding what you like and sewing the pieces together!

I made my middle granddaughter(5yo at the time) a quilt from Halloween colors (since her bday is in Oct and she LOVES Halloween 😂). It was in my first year of quilting & the first quilt I had done that wasn't a baby quilt. It's a crazy block that I think is called stack and whack? Where it's kinda what you are doing but in a stack and move the top to the bottom, etc. YOU know what I'm talking about. LOL I cut it horizontally and vertically. (I'm in my second year of quilting so I'm not familiar with ALL the names of techniques. There's probably one word that could've saved all this typing. 😂😂) It was slants and MILD curves. I didn't know then I was supposed to be afraid of them. I was so proud of that quilt!! I started quilting right as the pandemic started. I was gifted fabric online in those gifting groups. I had no idea the fabric was crap until I got it. It was practically see-through. The poor quilt didn't stand up to the many washings it took in a house of 5 kids with 2 toddlers younger than she. She was too scared to tell me at first what happened, but I encouraged her. I told her it wasn't her fault, but it was mine because I didn't know any better what kind of fabric to get and I would make her another. THIS time I will let her pick out, and I an SURE she will pick out something with cats! LOL My story of wonky improv(?) blocks in my first biggish quilt. LOL!!

This is genius! Which ever way "hits" YOU. Journey-ing might feel stagnate in the end. What about just numbering for now, and deciding later. Our journeys are often not a straight line but a smattering in life's big picture when we draw from past experience.😉

Great watching you make your beautiful blocks! Continue making blocks. This way you may have the option of placement where you find natural bleeds of color and you can disguise 2 or 3 blocks as one and have a flow. It will be beautiful regardless with your eye for color and construction.

Keep making more blocks until you think you have enough for a whole quilt--but keep them in the order that you made them. When it comes time to put the quilt together, you can try it out in order and if you don't like the way it looks you can mix them up.

😄 I wanted to speak to you while watching the video, like "Put it over on the right at an angle!" 😁 So fun! My $.02 is to wait till the end to figure out how you want to lay things out, but you do you. Some day when I have enough scraps, I'm going to try this! I need to try a curve first!

If I was doing this project, I'd wait until all the blocks were finished, then I'd work on how the blocks go together. But that's me! I enjoyed this video as it is so imaginative. I sometimes find myself getting bogged down if I go too far outside the box, so this would be a good way for me to stretch.

I just love the fabric you choose. You ever sell lots or bulk scraps? Weird question probably. I'm just getting into sewing. I made my sister a pixel quilt couple years ago. I got what fabric I had left over and then just order lots of fabric to for my daughter and I to paper piece her a quilt. I'd say that has to be my biggest problem at moment is putting colors together. Thank you for sharing. I have learned a lot from your channel. Hugs

Those colors sure brighten a dark and rainy October day! I’m still a novice quilter but my scrap bin is growing, so this was a really helpful tutorial. Also, I think you should wait and put your blocks together at the end, what if you make something brilliant that should be a focal point and you don’t have a good place for it?

I hope so because i have orphan blocks that i refuse to cut and I’d love to see how you put them together this way! By the way I was secretly thrilled to see you on the live MSQC chat lol

Best improv advice ever-... 1. Set (a few) rules for yourself (coloring on the page but not caring if I'm in the lines of the picture drawn on it) 2. Use the scraps from 1 block to guide the next one.
