Make a Star Wars Space Battle in Blender

In this tutorial I'll be breaking down my process of animating a space battle in Blender using paths, with some basic fracture effects and a volumetric explosion! Do let me know your thoughts on the video, how I can improve in future, and any tutorials you'd like to see covered!

This is an awesome 11 minute overview of the basics of creating a Star Wars Space Battle! How about creating a series of videos where you get into different categories when creating space battles? For example, one video can explain how to do lighting, another video can explain the lasers so forth.

Fun tip, you can use the annotate tool to create paths by simply drawing and then right-clicking then convert!

Haha I was about to say that it looked really impressive for an Eevee render, then got to the end and you revealed the final product was done in Cycles. That said, still a really helpful tutorial! This is gonna sound dumb, but I didn't know there was an Explode modifier (I have been using cell fracture). Also, your world lighting trick has really saved me! I am using a NPR shader that was having issues with the dark starry background. Now that I can trick it into lighting everything with a much brighter world, it looks great!

Glad to have helped! The 1st version of the animation was done in Eevee, but the explosion certainly doesn't look as good. I've been doing the same trick as you more recently and rendering the explosion separately in cycles and comping it back in.

Sometimes I like to have the sun flash by in a panning shot, but cycles lightsource although renders much faster than emissive object, is actually invisible if the camera is pointed at it. I do this trick where I put a disk where sun is and crank in hue saturation value,you can really crank it to like 500 times. It actually be a light source but noisier and unrealistically doubles the illumination. You can fix by selecting sun disk and in objects tab there is Ray visibility. Turn everything but camera off. The super hot disk with glow will flare and will render, but noisy illumination is ignored.

@@BenJewer yeah. You can also make a white sphere using the translucency shader. The sphere normally blocks the light and becomes a noisy emissive surface. Ticking off Ray visibility excepting camera blanks that noise and turns off shadows, so the light source goes straight out, but the sphere becomes insanely hot and can realistically key flares n glows.

little Question. I'm doing a Project quite similar to this and I modelled the X-Wing. It falls apart, when it comes to the rig. I was able to get the Wings to open properly, but I can't rotate the whole X-Wing without the Wings glitching around.

This looks really good but if u made the ships not follow as much it would look more real and more like the second ship is reacting to what the first ship does. So ye if u make it so the tyfighter just try turning away randomly and make the other ship react by spining to the side in order to keep aligned... would make it look again like its reacting to what the other ship does instead of mirrioring it

I got the volumetrics to show up somehow but my smoke is appearing as giant oversized cubes. I have to up the resolution divisions alot to slim them down, but how are you able to get your volumes so small with only 128 divisions?

How did you do the rig? I'm kinda new to blender and all I can find is character rigs

It's a really simple rig, just a bone for the body and then one for each wing. The same principles apply as a character rig, you just don't need to deal with weight painting etc, you can just parent objects directly to specific bones. I used a driver to control the wing bones simultaneously to make animation a bit easier - I'll be doing a quick tutorial on how to set that sort of thing up soon.

Nope, just normal key frame animation. In the graph editor I added a noise modifier set to very low intensity and limited the frame range to when they lock into place, that gives it the little bounce effect.

My particle system shoots out circles instead of smoke, do you know why? (this is the smoke system not the suystem for the tie fighter exploding)

Does the "Domain" have to be a Box or can it be any shape?

I believe it has to be a box yes. You can assign other shapes as domains, but as far as I know it will then just use that object's bounding box as the domain.

Time lapses are useless to me. You can explain all you want but if I can not see you doing the action as you explain that action where I can actually see it, it is useless.
