“Don’t make it” instead of “don’t miss it” That’s brilliant. I going to say to myself “ don’t hit the green” instead of “don’t miss the green” when I swing my long irons.

I saw this video yesterday. Having to deal with yips, I tried Mike's tip to say something taking the putter back and had seven 1 putts today. It's crazy but it works! Left 3 short but on line and drained 2 outside 20 feet all without any flinching at all. It changes the neuro-pathway and it was like putting like a kid again even though I missed a couple of 4 footers as well so could have even been better.

Enjoyed this video, especially the discussion abput the mental game. While I will admit that I am not a good golfer, my enjoyment of the game increased dramatically when I decided to count my 'comebackers' . . . those shots that I struck really well and made we want to comeback and play again. As soon as I stopped focusing on my mishits, my number of 'comebackers' increased exponentially.

Thanks! The mental aspect is always fascinating. I was taught a long time ago about "don't" ... although not quite the same (and not in a golf scenario) -- eg, a lot of people say "dont' forget to ..." instead of "remember to ..." -- flip it to be positive. But my favorite example is "don't think of the color BLUE" ... and 30 mins later, I can ask you, "what color did I say not to think about?" -- and of course you still remember it's BLUE. Am looking forward to trying that more on the golf course.

It seems the reason(s) Mike Malaska is such a great coach, instructor, and golf intellectual, is a career that was limited by the prevalent concepts on the 'golf swing' during his tour days, and what he came to later understand was how he played the game during his youth (and before "professional" coaching influences) is a reflection of what he now teaches. There are no truer words spoken than a mind that has endured the suffering of good intentions.

Mike, with all due respect, I'm not sure I agree with the concept that "2 min. later no-one remembers if you made it or missed it" . I am still plagued with the memory of needing a simple 2 putt from 8 feet for a two under best round, and blowing it way by leaving a 6 foot comebacker which I then missed, therefore 3 putt and blown opportunity . This happened 7 years ago. I still remember it !!!

I don't really understand why you would say "Don't make it" when you can just say "Make it" or "Roll it" or something similar. Why choose to start in the negative?
@KEVINSEPTEMBER

Best putting tips: Keep looking at where the ball was for a 3 count after you hit the putt, or keep you head down for a 3 count after the putt. Hear it drop don't peak. Also putt with your mouth open to relieve stress and tension, just a little bit not all the way open. And of course PRACTICE at the end of a round head over to the practice green for 20 minutes not before after. No pressure after a round easier to build confidence.

Interesting. I will give the tip of saying a name when taking the putter back a try. My main problem is putts 6' and in. I just put too much pressure on myself on those as I feel like I should make it. Saying a name hopefully will take my mind off that. Trying to trick my mind into thinking this doesn't mean anything is easier said than done.

Great tips! Definitely get a pre shot routine for every shot, one that is fairly quick though. Putting is all about confidence IMO. If you find a comfortable set up/grip that will get you rolling the ball on your lines over and over and you practice it a ton, then that’s huge. Also, practice hitting middle of face over and over. Get the skills down and be positive/focused on the process, not the results.
@CaelM8000
@CaelM8000 3 года назад
Good comments! I also like Malaska's thoughts on how to play a hole/cup. 1) See the point where the ball is going to roll into the cup. 2) Using the cup, practice on the ball reaching and dropping on the front edge, in the middle, and to the back of the cup. 3) practice going into the cup on the right side and left side. 4) Perhaps most important, don't see the cup in whole rather pinpoint a specific target line to the hole and that particular section (make the target narrow and the cup will become bigger (seemingly).

Great video, but the only 2 things you need to do is know you going to make the putt 2 feet or 60 feet. Pressure on your grip is important as well 2' just left pinky pressure and more pressure down the grip as the length increases. This allows opening and closing of the face as well. Only 1 course I've ever played where I am not sure I'm going to make every putt I hit, Torrey Pines, God I hate that course. They should play the Farmers at SDCC or Tijuana CC. Need a roll of TP after Torrey Pines. Putting is in your head just know I will make the putt, easy as that.

Picture it, the mid-1930's, the depth of the Great Depression. Ben Hogan and his wife Valerie are having to survive on the oranges they could glean from the groves in California during the PGA Tour's West coast swing. Ben speaks with her as to having to get a new putter to help his putting game. She asks what's the problem with the current one. He replies, "... it's not helping me sink those damn long putts." Her reply puts perspective to this problem, " Well Ben, hit the damn ball closer to the hole." That advice helped a lot more than a new putter ever did.

You must be telepathic!... I can make almost all of my second putts from 3' to 6' for par all day long but as soon as the same length is for Birdie, I start with all the "Don't Dos" thoughts and I do exactly what I just told myself not to do... I will have to go about putting as my wife she wants me to clean the garage, she uses reverse child psychology to get me to clean the garage... She'll something to the effect of, it really bothers me that you'd rather spend hours cleaning the garage than sitting here watching Hope Floats (Chick Flick) with me again... :-)

Putting is the worst part of my game. Both yesterday and today four 3 putts on the front and four more on the back!I even miss 2 footers regularly. I try to focus on the ball but I can see my putter head wobbling off line on the backstroke. So now I’m trying to take the arms out of the equation and just hinge the wrists. Not working either. I’m dying out there!

Stop looking at the putter in the backswing and look at the ball. I was doing the same thing putting and chipping and my contact was all over the place, pushes and pulls, thin and heavy, etc. When I was watching the path of the club head, my head was turning a little and I had to turn my head the exact same amount when I move the club head back to the ball to compensate.

basically you're saying is that visual info is directing the movement. And that you're brain (body) knows to make a good stroke to get the ball starting on the right line with the right speed. You must free your brain of obstructive thoughts that obstruct that good stroke.

You seem like a great putter Mike, but too much reverse physiology going on here in the first part. Simpler just to remove all mental thoughts and hit the ball over your intermediate target. If it goes in, good. If not, move on. Agree with second part.
@patarmstrong4676
@patarmstrong4676 3 года назад
"Reverse physiology" is probably a very good definition of being dead. Just a little levity here...we know what you meant, and I definitely agree about having few, if any, thoughts other than the routine and the process, and choosing an intermediate...I need to rely on that more. I do know you cannot play well when anxious or angry--that is clear, so working before the round and during to be stress free is a good strategy for preparing for the two- and three-footers in the round. I miss too many over the course of a season that should have been makes.
@losecaatvermeer
@losecaatvermeer 3 года назад
I will even go further and say that you can(must) train your thoughts (brain) to focus on these 2 matters each time, so that you can do that under pressure and so on.

@jhgolf25
@jhgolf25 4 года назад
Saying "make it" is the same as "don't miss is it" it's putting more pressure on the outcome. The goal is to trick the subconscious while reinforcing the right action. The pressure still exists, but if our subconscious blows it for our conscious then it will still result in a positive outcome, if our subconscious doesn't end up getting in the way, our conscious can freely make the putt still without being hindered bc an intentional action doesn't care what your thoughts were beforehand.
@wilsonhung8654
@wilsonhung8654 4 года назад
@@jhgolf25 Yes indeed, the key is the pressure. Instead of tricking the brain, why not make things simpler and train for concentration and pure execution. A putt is a putt, nothing more or less.

@@wilsonhung8654 you're obviously not a human and don't understand how sports and competition works. The greatest athletes of all time have dealt with pressure and aren't shy about talking about it.
