"There's no organization that requires you to register as a business to sell anything, you can sell your artwork at comic book conventions. You don't need some kind of registered business or something like that just to sell your original artwork. There's nothing that requires you to get a business license or sellers license." This is not entirely true SOME Conventions do ask that you provide a Tax ID number. I've done a few Cons where the Texas State Comptroller was present and going around checking tax ID numbers. They had tax agents there and after the show, I was required to pay a percentage based on the sales I did. They also asked about online sales, etc. They asked this for everyone who was selling. To say that you don't need one and to go ahead is RISKY!! It's better to be safe than sorry. Many of the vendors I know, no matter what they're selling ALL have TAX ID NUMBERS. So it depends on the state and Con.
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 5 лет назад
Vinyl Rebel this is good info for folks who get more serious about it, and move from online sales to conventions. It seems like the kind of thing that someone will find out when they start doing conventions. I did cons for 15 years in the early 2000s. That never once happened to me, and it would be irresponsible for a convention to not inform their vendors of their requirements. A tax ID is easier to get than a local or EIN. I’ll do a follow up with info on the tax ID number.

Stunning artwork!!! Perfect timing too, just sent off a dozen of illustrations to get them printed for a comic convention across my country this weekend, because I didn't finish any of the four mini comics I wanted to. I don't know how things are in the US, but here in Greece people now buy A TON of prints, but no comic books, which kinda saddens me, but it's definitely less work (timewise) for more money. Same rules apply for selling at conventions/online for us as well. Have a great day!!

I learned the hard way, I used to run to cons when I was learning to sell my Fan art. Slowly as I got better I was transitioning into my personal art. I sold fan Art 10 to 1 but I did get a lot of compliments and people wanting the project once it was done. Prints are a hard sell.

Really good tips. Last year at anime con I printed way too many prints (10 each) and none of them sold more than 3 or 4, because I didn’t think of the market and demand. Now I set up an Excel document to count all the cost and figure out what didn’t sell well and might just not sell it again this year. Also been thinking about what ppl would like and change my style to fit the market atm Also true about having very little followers and don’t really have interactions with them and can’t really promote my print store XD

Yeah that happened to me at a anime show, didn't sell anything and on top of that people were taking pictures of the artwork which should have been prohibited because what's the point of buying it now, if they got the pic of your artwork.

Fan art is the bread and butter of anime and comic cons. If a con has a problem with you selling fan art of a specific title they will state so in the rules when you sign up, in the US it’s usually just smaller brands like Rooster Teeth and Homestuck that ask for no fan art. There are big companies like Nintendo and Funimation that have said they allow fan art as long as it’s original and doesn’t use their logos and titles. It would probably be more of a hassle than anything to enforce and in places like Japan the fan culture would never allow for that anyway.

Hey trent, since your on this topic how would you suggest selling designs for t-shirts to and other merch should go when selling to a youtuber. Should it be a profit sharing type of thing in exchange for me giving more designs every month or so or should I just settle for an upfront payment. Since I dont have the biggest body of work I would just try to show them some designs and see where it goes from there. That being said id probably start with smaller youtubers first. And i know that if I want to do a tshirt "business" youtubers shouldnt be my main selling but I want your opinion.
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 5 лет назад
It's a good business idea. I would recommend that you offer the rights to use the artwork for a percentage of the profits. Many youtubers might not give you that, and offer you an up front payment. Just don't send them a high rez file until you have a signed contract.

Thanks again for the new video ! Seeing you drawing is always amazing, but after seeing this, I wished to ask: why do so many professional digital artist like you seem to love drawing with greyscales ? Isn't it hard to effectively implement color afterwards whiteout making things look a bit flat if you don't implement it in your drawing since the beginning ? Just wondering.
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 5 лет назад
If you're focused on character design or set design, it's already so much to think about. It's overwhelming to calculate color while designing. So I focus on grayscale render, and add color later. The color only takes me about 30-40 minutes usually. Theres just no time, and rendering good lighting and materials is not the "most important part "of conceptual design in a production environment.

What works for one artist may not work for another. I own my own Epson pro 7880 giclee printer. I found one can usually make enough for "beer and pizza money". But they also help to get your art and name out there, so try not to get discouraged or give up.

if you are making a profit off art in australia you need an ABN (Australian business number), thats if it's on a constant basis
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 5 лет назад
Really? Do you need a license to sell things on ebay or have a garage sale? Seems excessive, but I've never sold art in Australia before so I don't know. In the US, you can sell privately owned assets or services without a business license as a sole proprietorship which does not require any business registration.
@Carl_Wheezy
@Carl_Wheezy 5 лет назад
@@TrentKaniugaIf an artist frequently profits off of selling artwork, it would be considered more commercial or businesslike. I think its for tax purposes and consumer protection. So even selling at a garage sale or on ebay, if its constantly bringing a profitable form of income then its considered a business
@Sarai0Mia
@Sarai0Mia 5 лет назад
@TrentKaniuga I’m Australian ...to clarify a bit for you.... if you’re having a garage sale or eBay listing a few items you no longer need in you house or you got a new lounge and want to sell the old one ... if you create things to give as gifts, or sell them for ONLY the cost of materials used.... your good no ABN needed .... but if your giving old furniture a new life and flipping it to sell on constantly and regularly, if you have the intention of making a income or profit from it, are treating it as a job and running it like a business, or selling something you’ve made for more than the materials cost you then you likely need an ABN... if anyone’s interested I’ll add a helpful link and there is also a new section with information that’s specifically to help creatives work out if they need a ABN and if it’s classed as a business or hobby. www.business.gov.au/planning/new-businesses/a-business-or-a-hobby

I have a very small audience (a little over 150), and I don't think opening a private online shop(etsy/storeenvy etc.) would be a good idea for me. Nor would a print on demand shop be a good idea at this point if my small audience is put into the equation. I mean, I could try, it's free to set one up, but I think with such a small audience it wouldn't catch much attention, if any at all. I just don't have enough eyes on my art yet, and I've been working at it for about 2 years now. Maybe 3. I know these things take time, and tons of effort and I'm not giving up! I thought of going to art fairs and stuff for my artwork to maybe get people to see my work away from the internet, but I don't have the means to make merch (prints, and probably stickers to start) lol. So would it even be a good idea to try an art fair? Maybe commissions. But again, I need an audience who wants them XD I gotta get started somewhere, and I just dont know where to start. Any tips?

Hi Trent Kaniuga ! I want to ask about #drawthisinyourstyle challenge! Does the artist have the right to print his own version which participate in the challenge? Or is this not his right because the original concept is not his? I ask because I found some artists on Instagram have printed their versions and some do not, I'm now puzzled which two teams are right?

Honestly if you could go back to that expressive moment in your head I would buy the shit out of it. Some of that stuff reminds me of one of those beach speed spray painters. Thing is they are just painting pre conceived shapes. At a certain point you just started transcending Concept art as an idea. Some of those settings are extremely expressive!

At least in PA if your selling stuff at a profit (more money than you used to print them) and make more than i think 600 a year you need to have a business so they can get sales tax from you. Also if you do etsy your supposed to be set up to do sales tax, a lot of people dont bother, but at least your supposed to.

IS that a grey area or does it fall into "That idea belongs to Blizzard" (night elves) because I wouldn't sell prints of Tyrande, Malfurion, Illidan, etc. People tend to buy things that are instantly recognizable to them...

She sells prints, but they do not have logos or official branding. Also, at any time the IP holder could tell her to stop. She also risks legal action, and I believe she got into some hot water over that a couple of years ago. Its worth the risk to her i suppose. It's not legal technically. But most of the time big companies don't care. It's not talked about much but it's not technically legal to use the likeness of a character owned by someone else.
