It's been some time since I showed you how to make fresh from the garden skincare! This time we're using homegrown chamomile flowers to make a gentle and natural skin lotion. Chamomile is a healing flower, like calendula, and is used to gently soothe eczema and other inflamed skin conditions. It's great for normal skin too and smells simply incredible.
I also introduce you to my new book, A Woman's Garden, Grow Beautiful Plants and Make Useful Things, that's now available for preorder:
USA -- amzn.to/3fVcq8d
UK -- amzn.to/2WSznBw

I'm 45 and still concocting things but I'm a little better at it now thanks to people lile you Tanya haha,thanks so much and I'm excited about this book of yours. I use beeswax as an emulsifier. It's a natural preservative, and it smells fantastic! It also makes your skin feel super soft and silky!
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens Год назад
Beeswax is neither a true emulsifier nor in any way a preservative. It will not stop your cream from molding, growing fungus, or becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.
@aaanita
@aaanita Год назад
@@Lovelygreens are you sure? I created lipbalm with beeswax and some oils, three years ago and its still the same, was never refrigarated. Still not rancid, no mold either. (It does not contains distilled water though.)
@flopipop5376
@flopipop5376 Год назад
@@aaanita honey never grows bacteria so maybe beeswax doesn't either
@ropi8739
@ropi8739 Год назад
Beeswax is a high-quality, never completely understood by humans, resin. We just cannot fathom how it's REALLY created and what is its power. Being a resin, there's NO WAY mould can get there, let alone prosper. Blended with pure oils, with no water in them, still no way for mold to impact it.
@lmd2454
@lmd2454 Год назад
@@aaanita it definitely isn't an actual emulsifier, however, it can help the emulsification happen, it just doesn't make it stable. And although beeswax can't mold or go rancid itself, it doesn't protect the other oils from doing so either. Lip balm is a pretty stable formula because it is simple, there's no water, and it is pretty firm. All three things reduce the likelihood that it will go bad. So using it in lotions will not provide preservative action, or stabilize the emulsification.

I've been making my own skincare for many years. I enjoyed your video, thank you. I'm writing this while trying to beat the heat as I sip fresh mint & sweet basil, strawberry tea, sweetened with liquid stevia. One of many deliciously hydrating cold beverages I've had thanks to my garden offerings.

This was a refreshingly thorough tutorial. Thank you for sharing! I'm looking forward to your book! I LOVE the topics you'll cover. Can you elaborate on the preservative - how do we know when the lotion goes bad? Is there an obvious change in texture or smell? I skimmed through the instructions on your website but I didn't see if we just need to add enough to achieve a pH of 4.5 - 5.5 or if there is a ratio of preservative to the oil and water volume? Also, I tried to grow chamomile this summer but nothing germinated. Do you have any tips on growing it for the first time? Thanks in advance!
