Thank you for this content Josh. I have been painting and drawing since I was 4. I turn 60 in June and have not had the time to paint or sketch in years. My style has become more abstract, but I'm interested in digital art. Could you do a video on the various softwares you use to get different art projects done. Much appreciated

I wonder if that's the same with all "so called art", cause I seen paintings and drawings that look like scribble, or like something a preschool/kindergarten kid probably done, which somehow strangely seemed popular and sold for a lot. But yet I'm an artist of high quality skill, and I have a difficult time selling art. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, or something, I don't know, but sheez.
@zofiajaneczek184

James C unfortunately what is deemed as minimalist abstract art has been popular for a long time. Also rich people are funny, they’ll purchase something because it matches their duvet! There’s a place for your skill set out there. My personal preference is not abstract art, though all art takes skill and dedication if someone is an artist. A true-to-life portraiture is not even comparable to two black lines and two dots on a large white canvas!

Don't ever stop or allow anyone to place you in a position where you doubt yourself. I can proudly call myself a creative even though I've been on artistic hiatus for quite some time now. Because I am in a job, yes real job, that makes me deeply unhappy, angry, and pays me very little, all I can think about is resuming whatever I put down years ago. I wished people would at least try, really try to follow their talents and their hearts, you never know what will come out of that, it may be something of a miracle!

Coming from a NSFW artist (albeit a small one): While i 100% agree that nsfw gains a lot of attention, id say to artists to PLEASE dont think of it as the easy way to get money and fans. Only go into it if youre actually interested. People can tell really easily if you dont enjoy your own work and are just doing it for the "attention". Experiment with it first before you dive right in! You'll find rather quickly whether you like both it and the community around it.
@JoJoboiWav
@JoJoboiWav 3 года назад
anyway, what's wrong with doing something for attention ? if the public just wants nsfw work, why would they care about anything else ?
@clowncat9286
@clowncat9286 3 года назад
Doing it for the attention isnt necessarily bad for content production or the community who sees it, its bad for YOU and your happiness and satisfaction as a human. and tbh if you trivialize nsfw art down to "it gets the public looking at your content because they just want nsfw content and nothing else" you arent gonna be happy with the realization that it takes a lot more than just drawing a fat pair of knockers on samus to get you to the limelight you hoped to be in. The markets oversaturated and youre gonna need to do the same amount of work to make yourself stand out just as a sfw artist would. (i dont use you as in specifically YOU i mean it more as a general term of "any artist looking into nsfw art")
@PoggoThomas
@PoggoThomas 2 года назад
Meeeh, gonna dissagre. NSFW field is more popular than SFW, and especially it is more quality forgiving, people just want to fap for 5s, they don't care about stuff like shading and attention to detail till post-nut clarity hits. Just make something looking good enough. Still, advertising is your own problem. If you just post your artwork, and that's all, no one will notice. Ya gotta visit nsfw themed subreddits and post some of your stuff, make a twitter for yourself, follow some nsfw artists you like, maybe do nsfw commisions, etc. NSFW is easy to monetize and that's a fact. But other fact is that once you start and succeed, leaving is not going to be easy.

So I watched @audra auclair right after this and realized there's a million other ways to make money that aren't necessarily digital art or working in big name industries. You could literally do murals, cakes, paint glass windows, sell your work at conventions, become a scientific/magazine/comic/children's book illustrator, or even become a tattoo artist! All of those things can be done freelance or as your own business. So hopefully those of you who don't vibe with what I suggested can still realize a path for yourself because the possibilities are nearly endless!

To those who are still in high school, and still trying to figure out what you want to do in life. If you love to draw and want to do it for a living, you can become a medical illustrator! @@duckduckno Hey, sorry for the long wait! In the program, you typically start off with drawing traditionally, then later they'll introduce you to drawing digitally. For instance, creating a Trompe l'oeil piece in graphite, colored study of the hand, choosing a bug of your choice and creating an informational ink piece based off of it ect. For the digital art courses, you'll learn how to create info-graphs and essentially hone in on your Photoshop and Illustration skills. This is just what the curriculum is like where I am studying. Drawing pictures isn't enough, you have to give people a reason to give you money. I make money with ads on my comics and then people get to read the comic for free but have to pay through patreon for the r-rated panels. This is a really common way to make money with art. R-rated content is probably the best way to make money for someone who is just average. When I get better I want to work in a different genre but for now it's my only option and I'm just glad to get to draw all day everyday instead of some unrelated job.

Three top things i always suggest people when they ask about "making money as an artist": 1. Don't draw what you don't like. People will more likely to appreciate your work, if you enjoy what you do. 2. Find whether you want to be a freelancer or work in industry as end goal. While both path can interweave, people who order assets for games or films, and people who order cute cahracter art don't really communicate between each others. Word of mouth is an important resource you get from your works. Taking projects and working with people in industry will benefit people who want to work in it, while taking commissions and drawing for regular people benefin freelancer, since yor clients often are just people looking for a single art piece. 3. Never drop your price. You are not competing against "cheaper" products, you are extablishing yourself. You won't get more clients if your price is lower. Early it's always hard to find clients without external help, no matter how low your prices are. You are putting value on your time. After all, people who are willing to pay for your work are looking for your skills in a first place. - Another little thing is to avoid "artist promotion" groups and sites. While they can be benificial to people who yet to find their ground, they are often used by "shady" companies or not so nice people to find as cheap artwork for their need as possible, often undermining value of each indivudual artist, sometimes leading to a lot of bad experiences for an artist and potential losses. Not to mention that you are not establishing your own social media presence, giving more traffic to creator of the group or a site. Work on your own social media presence and how to seek out clients and promote yourself.

As far as sharing your goals online, there are many that will have their 2 cents to put doubt, belittle, and try to place nastiness into your life. The "get a real job" is total BS, I've worked, yes real work, real jobs for years and none of them made me happy unless they allowed me to use my creativity. Along with this, many of these so-called "real jobs" paid such crap wages that you felt like you were truly in a fake job with training wheels that were tied to a greed mongering corporate world that just devoured your soul and spit you out to consume the next person!

Try joining Amino! I feel like it's a pretty safe place to sell. (If you know what you're doing) (Avoid young-sounding people, immature people, or people who don't seem very stable, and ask for payment after a sketch, etc.) If you enjoy drawing animals to any extent, you can try joining the Furry amino. There's a Paypal market within it which I have found to be quite safe, and gets the word out to hundreds of people instantly. Sending your prices and examples at a time in which more people are awake can get tens of people contacting you. (Stay away from very new accounts and sketchy people. I haven't seen many, but better safe than sorry.) If you don't, then I suggest CoinAdopts amino. (There's a designated Art amino, but I don't like it very much.) Amino coins are a mandatory option of payment, which is a huge downside if you don't want to hang around amino for anything other than selling. (Amino Coins are mainly used for personalisation within the app, and using to sell and buy art as well.) You can sell characters and designs on this amino, along with Art and other similar things. Follow the same precautions as for Furry amino. If you have already heard of Amino, then I probably sound like a goof, but here goes anyway haha.

@Kiraii
@Kiraii 4 года назад
@@ckazei4352 Cine Ghost Ah, personally, I feel like most artists will join this amino, obviously, because of the name! But there isn't much passion to be seen, and it isn't quite as active (active, meaning, actually fun to be in and post, active) as other aminos. People seem bored on there. They post, then go back to what they were doing. It reminds me a bit of a graveyard, haha. But! It isn't nessesarily bad! It was one of my first aminos to be in, and helped me learn a lot about amino as a whole, too. In my opinion, it's an alright amino, but another suggestion would be to have a look at what fandoms you're in, and try joining one of those! You'll have more fun, and your posts likely have more interaction!

Hello, I love how you tried to help people that are emerging now! As well I'd like to add something. Not everyone's passion for drawing is made to become a job.. not because you are not good enough, but because some people will end up having a really hard time with it.. "Do what you love, and you'll never work another day in your life" is not always true, especially for artistic people. If some of you like to draw, remember that you can as well just keep it as a hobby :) Thanks for being so honest tho, and as well for making other artists names, very helpful!

@Crucibelle yes, I would tend to agree with you! For me, first and foremost art has always been my first love and it was a great escape from my often horrible life as a child at times. Later as an adult, I got back into it and was going to start a business but the economy crashed so there was pressure from family and friends to put that down, buckle down, "get a real job". I 110% regret taking the ill advice of others because had I stuck with it, I would likely be someone making pretty decent money from this line of work, meaning art. I've lost so much of my life catering and pleasing others and put art down to make them happy. Currently, I'm stuck in a soul-crushing, underpaying, dead-end job that almost killed me this year! My employer is a billion-dollar conglomerate but can't be bothered to value workers at the very bottom to pay a living wage! So, yes agreed, life sucks horribly and that's why we're artists!

Also making connections and being present in the now. As in always being aware of what is happening around you, even if it doesn't seem to relate directly to your field, it might be a big help to landing a job or improving yourself. It was also a very good point to not try to imitate other artists(style wise) and rather to try and achieve at least the same level of skill that is rivaling your work. Kudos to you good sir

Great tips for aspiring full time artists! Although building a brand/personality behind your art might take the longest to achieve it’s essential for all creatives (even if you’re selling art like the Mark Rothko lol) because people don’t buy products (yes art can be a product) they buy personalities. Most people think that artists are mystical beings with talents like no one else so artists need to take advantage of connecting with people not only with their work but with who they are. This is something you’ve done beautifully with your channel. And yes, business skills are essential if you want to make a living from your art! I always tell my students that artists need to have a balance of 80/20 when it comes to creating a profitable career from their art. It’s important to spend 80% of the time creating great work/ improving your skills and the other 20% promoting your work online, connecting with people, and learning about business. The small 20% of time you take to put yourself out there and focus on the “business side” is what truly brings in the profits. This is a balance that any artist can achieve no matter what style they work in. Lastly, once you get to a level where you accept commissions and sponsorships it’s so important to have good negotiating skills. I know so many artists that have shared horror stories about being underpaid because they were too intimidated to negotiate with large companies. When you know your worth, you know how to negotiate, and you’re confident in your work you are unstoppable!
@ergojosh
@ergojosh 4 года назад
Thats a great comment! People do tend to have negative stigma towards artists so building a brand can be even more helpful for that reason. And yess that sweet 80/20 rule is so key, you must be a great teacher I wish I heard that in school!

I’ve never had anyone see me as a mystical being or anything for that matter. Most I’ve heard is that I’m going to starve, art doesn’t pay, or I’m weird and way too different. That being said, nowadays I prefer loneliness, away from people (this crap judgemental society that surrounds us) and close to nature where I actually feel free, happy and at peace. PS: been drawing since I was 7 years old, love photography, love crafting and more current, digital art.

I feel that way too. Most of the time, after you've posted something you're proud of, say, a zombie or something, only a select few people will look at the piece and see how it comes together, where a lot of others just think "ew, creepy" and go elsewhere. Exactly! I understand how people are often more interested in colorful and pretty things, but rendering things to be grotesque, disturbing, and believable can be just as difficult and meaningful (if not more so at times) as pretty things. I think because of our interests in art, we learn to appreciate more than just the first glance. Not saying I'm not guilty of doing this, but I hope some people who devalue things based on subject matter can learn to value a piece's execution nonetheless. Well if you want to go the freelancer road I would say it's pretty important to learn unique set of skills that not many people have. That was actually my road to build fully functioning studio out of my pc and drawing tablet in the bedroom. Also, connections before everything else. Set hard rules of working with you and people will respect you. Be polite and always try to find good sides even from your failures or nasty clients. Try to deliver something extra for your clients. Not really in the matter of art or project that you are hired for, but in terms of social skills and advice. Conect with people at personal level and thay will come back to you even if there are better options on the market. It's bumpy road at the start, but after 4 years I would say it became pretty easy and satisfying way of living :)
