This is a great breakdown of the hook, it actually made me realise what a great tool that hook can be to retreat with. Boxing always teaches us to pull the weight onto the rear leg, to twist and create torque. If you miss with that rear overhand, following up with the hook gives them something to think about while you move out of range or pivot. I’m definitely going to add this to my drills

hooks with elbows facing down and executed diagonal and upward, this hook is great towards a bend over rushing forward opponent. this elbow facing down in close fighting can get pin by the opponent body. lifting the elbow up in a close range gives the elbow the freedom to execute the hook because is away from the opponent body. specially while leaning back with the hook. elbows up alone torquing the body creates more power to the hook. hooks are not forward and backward executions unless both arms hook are used in combinations. hooks are mostly used to beat your opponent to the punch as a way to get him out of your space with hope it knocks him out

*Very nice! Thanks. I was just training this yesterday in the JKD class. Not the move and hook yet, just hook from a static position.*

*Your student moves very fast! He's got a lot of experience. I have a question on the hook punch. You mentioned the hip should move last. I watched in another video that the hip should be first as it ultimately drives the punch to the target and is faster and more powerful and also slightly lifting your heel up on the side where you punch and put the heel down on the back foot, to give you more power.*

Dear Thomas, I have a question regarding my training at the gym. In order to achieve 15 reps of 100kg bench press how would you recommend to train or how did Sifu Tommy Carruthers teach you to do so? Is it alright if I start with less weight like 50 kg total volume, 15 reps, like 2 sets or is one set enough as the weights get exponentially heavier? I am a beginner at the gym, so I‘d be glad if you could answer my question. I trained like this for a few weeks now, but I feel really weak and before I trained like the traditional gym way with 3 sets of 7-12 reps stacking up the weights up to maximum of 70-80 kg and I felt a lot stronger, got heavier faster and could stack up more weight faster. Since I heard the 15 reps of 100 kg bench press I started to do 15 reps with less weight as I am not able to do more. I definitely understood it‘s a different muscle that is trained when doing more reps, but it‘s not getting bigger and with this training method I wonder when I can stack more weights than 50 kg in total? Maybe I train wrong, so I‘m really looking forward to your answer. Thank you! Yours sincerely! An unimportant RU-vid User.

You need to lift heavy. But getting to 15 times 100 is quite a goal. You need consistency. I ttrain 4 to 8 reps. 4 to 6 sets.

That's a hook punch alright, but bruce got it all wrong calling the roundhouse kick a hook kick, the kick should show the same principle behind the 'hook' punch

In jkd its called a hook kick. Roundhouse kick is a stupid term. It comes from same angle as a hook punch, therefore hook kick. You wouldn't call a hook punch a roundhouse punch either.

A roundhouse was a building that rotated trains engines 180 degrees so they could turn around. In martial arts it means a full 180 degree rotational attack kick. Most use the term 'spinning' now with the elbow, backfist or back kick
