I made this bag using lighter weight, outdoor fabric backed with interfacing because I just have a regular domestic machine. 😕 And my machine still struggled in some places. But the bag still turned out fantastic, and I use it with a D ring strap and carabiner to attach it to my bike basket. Works great! And I finally gave in today and ordered an Ultrafeed LSZ as a Christmas gift for myself. 😄 I will definitely make this bag again, using the new machine, recommended fabric, and supplies! Can’t wait for the machine to get here !!

Thank you Sailrite for the great videos. I have sewn numerous bags and projects over the years from watching Sailrite videos and being able to purchase the exact materials and supplies used in the videos is very important to me. My only negative comment is speeding up the video is something Sailrite usually does not do like other online sewing videos. I understand not showing sewing every seam or connection in detail however fast forwarding thru important sewing positions is something Sailrite has never done before and I hope this not the new normal. Seeing how to position the project under the foot and sewing the "first one" is a very important step that should not be glossed over and would only add a couple of minutes to the video. Having said that please continue to make these educational videos and it's always great to see new faces at Sailrite. Thank you.

If you are looking for longer, more in depth project tutorials we recommend our Sailrite DIY channel. (Here is the link to that channel: @SailriteDIY) Our Sailrite Workbench channel will focus on featuring product tutorials, selection guides, how to, and shorter form DIY projects. Both channels provide a wide variety of DIY information!

@@SailriteWorkbench I would like to see more van bags for camper vans. A great idea would be headrest organizer with bags or molie webbing to hang on the back of car seats. There is a huge movement in camper vans and even insulated sun visor would be a good project for all cars.

How do you sew the bag sides together properly without leaving a hole where the thick corners meet? My fabricator can’t even sew over all that thickness!! I also agree that this is a critical part of the pattern and you should not fast forward in the video. I’m thinking I need to try this pattern without the grosgrain ribbon binding on the edges, since the Cordura is cut with a hot knife so binding seems unnecessary. Bummer I’m having trouble with finishing, as I plan on making more for my snowboarding grandsons. I’m using the black and blue camouflage Cordura and it looks great while still flat, lol. I also bought pink camouflage Cordura for girls. Any good tips on the fat corners?

How heavy is the hot knife you are cutting with? Ty! Super video! Ty for the free pattern!
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
The hotknife we are using in the video is the Sailrite Cordless Hotknife. This tool weights about 1lb and 11oz. with the battery attached. We also sell a corded hotknife which is a little heavier and weights about 2lb and 5 oz. Hope this is helpful!

Hi Sailrite workshop, What would be the ideal stitch length for this project?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
We would recommend a stitch length of 4-5mm. The smaller stitches make it easier to sew in tight corners of the bag.
@kentfarmhouse4039
@kentfarmhouse4039 Год назад
Hi Sailrite! I love that you do so many tutorial videos, but this one is incredibly difficult to execute. I make bags and was wondering how you were going to sew the seams together after already sewing the binding to the seam allowances. It didn't make sense- so I decided to follow along and make the bag. It eventually seemed to be one of those videos where they speed up or blur the areas that are obviously going to have some problems or design issues. It would have been good if she had talked about the fact that sewing the corners together was going to have some problems. It comes off strictly as a way to sell the kit and fabric, and not being an actual tutorial. Btw, I own an Ultrafeed and buy products from your company.

We are sorry you experienced difficulty while making the fanny pack. Our goal is never to confuse or disguise the DIY process. Our goal in these DIY videos is to showcase projects that you can make with Sailrite tools and materials. This Sailrite workbench channel will focus more on shorter form, inspirational DIY project videos while our other channel, Sailrite DIY, will feature longer form DIY videos that walk through each step in detail. But regardless we can still offer some tips for creating this bag. Sewing bag corners can be tricky! We would recommend minimizing the amount of binding that overlaps in the corners. We hope this is helpful for you! And if you have anymore questions about this project feel free to comment them on the video or on our project blog and we'd love to answer them!

can you use a sew cordura with a regular sewing machine
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
Home sewing machines can sew up to a couple layers of Cordura fabric but with this particular project there are many sections that have multiple layers of Cordura, zippers, and webbing. So for those reasons we would recommend using a heavy-duty sewing machine for this project and material combination. On the other hand, this project can be modified to be sewn on a home sewing machine. (For example not using binding, using a thinner fabric, and/or removing the outside webbing loops)

I have lots of left over sunbrella, what's the difference between cordura and sunbrella?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
Left over Sunbrella would work great for this project! We chose to use Cordura fabric for this project because it is designed for bag making. But both Cordura and Sunbrella fabric are both stiffer fabrics that offer water resistance and durability which work great for this style of bag.

Any suggestions on printer settings? Mine printed out significantly smaller than the measurements on the pattern dictate it should be.
@SailriteWorkbench

We would recommend that your printer settings are set to "print full size" and not "fit to page". Otherwise it might print out smaller than the pattern should be. Hope this is helpful!

Awesome video. Well done. Q: with 1 yard of each color, will it make more than one bag? Thanks
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
Definitely! Depending on how closely you pattern on your fabric, you can get roughly 8 bags when you use 1 YD of 3 different colors of Cordura fabric. If you choose to use a different fabric, the width of the fabric might change the amount of bags you can get out of the material. (Cordura is a 60" wide fabric.)

4 yards of fabric for a fanny pack. What?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
We understand your concern about the amount of fabric used in the project. Since a fanny pack is a smaller project, you can easily make multiple projects with the extra yardage. While we did suggest using 4 yards of fabric to create a multicolored fanny pack, we want to clarify that you can definitely use less fabric if you want to make it all one color. We simply wanted to showcase the possibilities of using multiple colors to create a unique and personalized fanny pack. We hope this clears up any confusion.

Thanks for this video Sailrite 👌🏻 Three tips: 1. Not to have such loud music in an instruction video, it's distracting. 2. Not to speed up the sewing just as the pouch gets structurally more complex, it's confusing. 3. Can you mention the type of Cordura used, 500D or 1000D, coated, not coated, etc. And bonus tip, can we know who we're following along with, her first name? Many thanks!
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Год назад
We used 1000D coated Cordura fabric for this Fanny Pack. In the description you'll be able to find specific links to the Cordura fabric colors we used. Hope this is helpful!
