I'm gonna develope an app about Elastic habbits and you really changed my life can I add you in special thanks and also if you tell your name I'll add it
Wonderful insight right here: "If you miss any day, it means that your mini-goal is too big and you need to make it smaller." I will apply this. Thank you!
My mini goals are TINY goals. No, not reading one page. Reading one line. Sometimes, one word. No, not one negative pull up. Putting on my exercise shorts. Just the shorts. Or getting up from bed. Sometimes, you need to go that far if you struggle with burnout or depression.
It's just enough to remind yourself "this is what i do" and you get to remind yourself every day. Versus not reminding yourself at all for quite a few days and then you forget to do anything
True! It’s also a matter of making it part of your “identity”. If I’m an “active and fit guy” I am more likely to be going to the gym and take pride in it. It’s about changing your mindset. Arnold said that when he worked out he would smile during his sets while everyone else worked out looking miserable because with every rep he felt he was actualizing his personal goals and dreams.
Great advice. I've not always loved working out but I've been working out in the last months and I love it because it makes me feel so good, sometimes I smile when I'm working out because of that.
I'm learning Spanish via Duolingo. I'm on a 200 days' strike already. For that I have obtain at least 10 points. (one "lesson) That takes at most 15 minutes. Sometimes (the last months more often than before) I do only that one lesson. But when I have time and taste then I do 3, 5 or even more lessons. So I gain more points. Depending on what my "class-mates" do, I have to make between 200 and 500 points each week to stay on the same class level. It's just after midnight now. So now I'm going to the Thursday's lesson. To keep the strike (well, streak it should be) and habit alive.
@Hans de Groot that's very nice. I, for one, have the minimum daily goal of 50pts and that actually fucked my streak sometimes. 50 pts is also too long. Changing it to 10 is a very good thoughtprocess. thx
It's hard to keep a good habit. It's hard to be consistent. Easy to say, hard to do. We have to dig deeper and don't believe our mind's lie. Because everything is possible... ! God bless❤️👌🏻
Yes, but those who have been conditioned to enjoy delayed gratification have a big step up. And those who got anything they wanted, anytime have it much harder.
I did this when I wanted to get into the habit of drawing daily. There were some days where even 5 min of drawing I knew couldn't happen. So I just did a doodle. Any doodle. An ugly doodle, an emoji, a simple eye. Took a min or less, but that didn't matter, it was done. That said, to give myself the incentive to not just rely on crappy doodles I paid myself a certain amount for minutes spent so that I could buy myself a surface book 2 and get into digital art (plus I needed a laptop anyway). I accomplished my goal and although I had the money it still took me months before I bought it because I enjoyed drawing with pencil so much I didn't want to get distracted 😁 It really did become a habit. So much so that if I didn't draw it felt like I was going to bed without brushing my teeth. And in those instances, since I had that nagging feeling I just doodled on my cell phone since I had a Samsung Note. If I remember correctly I got the idea from the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, whereby making a consistent daily habit of doing the least amount possible would gradually over time add up to larger overall improvements. That said, once you get in the motion of things, the momentum of it will drive you to do more and without considerable willpower. These philosophies are definitely very useful methods for building habits. I liked the idea of having small, medium and larger efforts to choose from ^_^
THis kind of knowledge is what my educational system need to teach. I live in a underdeveloped country and here are a lot of people who this kind of videos may change the way they lead their lives.
This idea takes the 2 minute rule to a new level. It lets you do mini stuff and get the satisfaction of daily success, but the higher levels of accomplishment give you extra reward on the days you do want to do more. Not only are you free to do more; you get an extra bump from it by seeing yourself as Elite! This channel has become my go to source for continuing education material for my daily morning routine!
Not my account btw, but I would like to express my appreciation for explaining simply widening your evaluation space for the day [ from { ALL :> , NOTHING :( } to { ALL(or elite) :> , medium(or plus :) , minimum(or mini) :/ , or NOTHING :( } ] with a clear first step goal of making mini an absolute minimum and pushing the average up. I've always known habits were the key to success, and I felt I had to force myself to lower my goals to achieve consistency. I can't believe I've never considered evaluating the day in graduations. Truly, thanks man. I just made a calender and five part goal sheet (nutrition, stretch, workout, heigene, and work) each with 3 stages (pink purple and blue..... colors help make things clear) and rules (such as work after (workout after stretch) and (heigene and nutrition are on schedule) For others work should be more important, but as a recovering addict trying to kick other habbits its very important for my mindset to stay right. Work is delayed gratification and very important, but as it affects my mindset later it takes last place atm.
I wonder if a good rule of thumb is to not make new elite goals until you can get medium to be your mini (once Mike starts seeing all blue and red, he should pull out a white sticker, then and only then does he consider green a failure) once this stage hopping happens again he can reuse green.
I love, love, love this explanation! I listened 2 different days, and I noticed that the first time, I only heard the part about 3 intensities, not the part about 3 different options for activity. Now I get how to be consistent with flexible habits instead of rigidly failing time after time! Oh, yes, and the mini-goals perhaps being too big was an eye-opener too. THANK YOU! Signed, a couch potato with bad exercise habits.
I always wanted to start certain projects around the house, a fix here and there, and never "got around to it". As soon as I started breaking tasks to miniscule ones I finally started finishing & ticking off projects. 🙂Some days I feel pretty lazy and don't do anything important, but I'll try upgrading my self-hacking strategy with these tricks. Thanks! 👍
I have always struggled with procrastination. I now click on your playlist of vids for productivity and success whenever I start feeling unmotivated. I usually end up finishing a lot of tasks I was escaping while listening. Definitely going to make flexible habits too! Thanks so much! 😊👍💪
hey man! thanks to your videos now I'm studying computer programming every day even though I have a full time job :) . you've taught me that setting your goal to a short quick task is the key to start the task, then "it is so much easier to keep on going for a little longer" . life is dynamic and ever changing but you are helping people to take control over chaos, thank you :D
I had made a goal of listening/watching one of your videos each evening, but HAD TO slip this extra one in today. Totally inspired! Now I will read Stephen Guise's book! Again, thank you for your great videos. I am going to make an elastic habit grid and calendar right now to more flexibly address my goals. Yay!
Sir please do a video on " overcoming perfectionism " , its ruining many people including me . By the by ,im always thankful for Your videos , they are of great help . If you would do a video on this topic it would be great help sir , please consider
Doing a little bit at a time makes a big difference in maintaining our habits. When we try to take on too much at once, we tend to get nothing done. We need to pace ourselves and grace ourselves. 💜💜💜
Great video! I recently just finished reading a great book talking about the same topic (The power of habit ). After watching this video I think I might do one but for Financial habits on my channel. Thanks for a great video
3:22 "Don't break the chain" works great but the trap in it is that it can be incredibly demoralising if a long chain ever *does* break. It's very discouraging starting again from zero, knowing it will take ages to to even get back to where you were. "Screw it" starts looking very appealing in those circumstances...
I’ve always wanted to consistently do a habit but they don’t really stick. Like studying or learning a language, but this time I think I can consider doing mini versions of my habits. This channel and Ali Abdaal’s are the channels I’ve been binge-watching lately. Thank you so much!
AHA, this is the concept I used (unknowingly) to change my diet/lifestyle forever. I set up my new plan to be strict 5 days per week and lenient (wide open) for 2 days. Later on I found I didn't need the 2 days so much (eating "off plan" eventually became less appealing because of all the drawbacks, and how tastes/cravings change). I was able to get off sugar/sodas, fats/oils, and animal products (yes that includes CHEESE). Cheese was tough, kept trying to reestablish itself, but eventually I wised up to the addictive nature of chemistry of cheese and no longer eat it except on my "open" days. These open days could fall on any day of the week to allow for birthdays and holidays when folks would be eating more traditional things and less healthful things. Made the plan brilliantly easy --or ELASTIC as is taught here. Thanks for helping me make that connection to some awesome changes I already made in my life. It will make it easier to design "elasticity" into the other changes I'm making.
FTR I changed my eating plan over five years ago and the "elasticity" and great results I've experienced made it incredibly EASY to maintain. I never want to be "fat, sick, and tired" all the time like before. Life is better now.
I've been taking notes from your channel often and it's extremely helpful to everyone's life around the world. You deserve millions of subscribers. After taking notes and completing this video, I'll start writing down the intensity of my habits and stick to them. Your channel helps me out a ton and educates me daily. Thank you for creating this channel, much love!
I work with minimum, middle and maximum goals for my exercising. I find that often times I do more than the minimum. This video encouraged me to apply this system to my other habits as well. Thank you. I like your RU-vid channel.
Great video! I like how this combines multiple habit strategies into one system!! Building positive habits is one of the most important thing we can do to change our lives for the better. I like what Jim Rohn used to say, “we must all pay one of two prices. The price of discipline or the price of neglect.”
You are really doing so well 🙏💯....I know we can't change destination immediately but we can change directions with our lives at where we are at the moment....glad you are helping others do same with your amazing videos. ❤🙌🙌
This is underrated video with surprisingly 90k views! It changed my life perspective in about doing my habits. Thank you very much for an over simplified video!
This is the exact same thing taught by the Prophet Muhammed (sa). He said the prayer 5 daily prayers are obligatory meaning mini or green in this case. And with 5 daily prayers there are those prayers of the Prophet that are supplementary in order to protect the five daily prayers. In this case Plus or blue color. Then if you wish to achieve a higher spiritual level there are voluntary prayers. In this case Elite or the red color. Thank you so much to the author of the book The elastic habits and the creator of this video. Today I understood the philosophy of my religion. Keep up the good work guys.
This is something that so many people overlook when it comes to building habits. Being more flexible with the way you go about things can really help some people stick to them - nice video!
Thanks for this video! Another example for mini habits would be the 2 minutes rule. Also definitely worth having a look at. Both really helped me sticking to my habits.👍
This, ever since I told myself, I will workout, and do as some much of my training plan as I can and stop as soon as I am tired, I do more every time and I actually do something, compared to nothing
Ok, normally I would call bs about a statement like you made. but seeing that it was you that made it, i will watch this video and consider your words.... Right after I watch the four videos, in hopes of helping you out in return for all of your good work.....
I did this with working out for 18 months until I fell out of it because of work stress. I should start again. I was in the best shape of my life then. I started out by counting just putting on my socks and shoes as a win and then anything else as bonus depending on whether I was up for it on the day. The magical thing is that the bare minimum zero effort task somehow gets bigger on its own after you string a few weeks together. My mini “workout” just got bigger in terms of effort (not time). Shit.. Ok starting again today.
Your channel is beautiful. It helps people make themselves better and even endangers itself to teach people about addiction on the internet. I’m currently learning Russian so I think this will be very helpful.
This was my 2nd "Continuing Education" video of the day that I have watched AFTER my scheduled "work day." That includes one continuing education video only. It is now 3:24am, and I move on to some more stuff on the psychology of pricing, because it is such a cool topic! And my fifteen to twenty minute work day is over!
And here I thought an elastic band around your wrist to twang yourself with when thinking of doing a bad habit was going to be the subject. This works too. 😁☮️❤️🙏🏻
Solid video! I read the first two chapters of the book on Amazon after watching this. Definitely going to put this idea to work and read the full book later.
I deleted my Facebook..whatsApp.. Instagram and Snapchat...cos they really took my time. I now have a podcast app.. Duolingo... RU-vid and SoloLearn which i making me more productive automatically giving me no chance to watch porn..
