Opening the windows and getting fresh air is the standard in Germany and I do it now that I’m in Vancouver, too! That freshens the scent and makes the space more luxurious, too!
Great advice, and I’m so glad you mentioned a clean smell, not a migraine-inducing designer candle scent. I would add that you can do fresh flowers very inexpensively if you dedicate a corner of a garden (or a couple of containers) to growing flowers that you intend to cut and bring in to the house. I currently have daffodils that I grew myself but I also grow tulips, irises and all sorts of other flowers over the course of the spring and summer, most of which are only a few £s/$s for a pack of bulbs.
Yep, I can't have candles in my place because pretty much ALL smells are migraine-inducing with my family. However, working on keeping the house cleaner (Winter is always a bad time for me), and hopefully getting a bit of spring cleaning done. LOVE that Garrett said that part of spring cleaning is maintaining your place, not just clean it, with nail holes all over the place.
Oh, clutter makes me anxious. It's so chaotic and hardly conducive to a tranquil and relaxing home. I did a ruthless decluttering a few years back and with every box and bag that left my home, I felt like another 5lbs was being lifted from my shoulders. I like using my steam cleaner for the fridge, stove, etc. It leaves a fresh scent with no chemicals. Thanks for more sensible advice for things anyone can do to improve their homes!
I really loved this one. I watch alot of those remodeling shows and the thing I notice most often costing the new owners a ton of money are little things that could've been yearly upkeep that were never done and ended up rotting or molding or staining or chipping. A home is a huge investment why wouldn't you try and keep up little thing here and there that'll insure your homes shelf life and value
Even though I have a ventilation system in my home, I still love fans. Nothing beats the feeling of fresh wind. I love to crack open a window, put on my fan in low, and just enjoy the breeze. Bonus points if you turn the fan on after it rains.
"actually smells like dirt" made me laugh. Here's a trick we use for cleaner air circulation. We cut to size and tape a furnace hepa filter inside the air intakes to catch and trap moisture, dust, dog hair, etc. before it gets into the ducting. This will keep your ducting clean and mildew free and your air fresher for much, much longer.
I’ve just replaced all my floors in my condo…..finally no more crappy (21 year old!) carpet, sheet vinyl, wood laminate all clashing and making the space choppy. Baseboards are getting a touch up soon and new color on the walls. I’ve learned so much from you and appreciate your work for us. You’re beautifying the world!
Clean, fresh, and decluttered...the best thing of all, these things can be had for a bit of elbow grease! One of my mother's favorite comments was always that soap and water are cheep! My parents had 5 children before they turned thirty...our home, humble but always clean, neat.
OMG the Caraway Kitchen set comes in Green...my favorite and I LOVE the organization that comes with it. Always love your video/tutorials. Great advice or reminders for some. You are changing the way my home looks, day and night ...and I am 77...never too late to live the life of luxury.
Yes for sure, a clean and tidy home that smells fresh, I think that's the most important thing. Even if someone has nice stuff, if it's cluttered, messy, dusty or smells stale/weird I just want outta there! Painting the baseboards and keeping them looking their best is a great idea, I'll be doing mine again soon. Thanks again Garrett for another great video.
"Some people look better at night too." Ha Ha I love that this isn't about spending money on brands - but on elbow work and attention to how things that already are -can be used or re-organized to make a place look better. That is a helpful video for anyone. Thank you.
This is very true: very THOROUGH Cleaning is a MUST and AIRING the place ... Yes too if it comes to light ... I do exactly the same ... and it feels home ...
A fresh clean bedsheets is luxurious to me. A fresh coffee in the morning by the open window also a luxurious to me. Really great video, clean is always luxurious.
Those are beautiful pans! Sometimes I leave a (clean) large pan on my stove just to make it look like the home is being used. Mine are hammered copper so I think they look like jewelry on my stove. With Alexa I can use the Sengled bulbs and adjust them to the color or brightness I like. I can even put a blue one in my bar and make it look so chic. Garrett you deserve to have a show on one of the cool home channels! I love that you help people learn how to be more luxurious! I prefer a home that does not smell like animals.
The thing that that makes a space feel luxurious to me are window coverings and draperies that fit the windows. Nothing cheapens a room more than having too short or too small window coverings.
I think bright white and high quality towels in bathrooms and kitchens are the ultimate luxury. Plus, you and guests interact with them all the time and enjoy that simple luxury.
Bonjour Garrett ! Congratulations on so many great advices, I do agree with you on those. Let me add one more : not to forget to change the carpet in front of the door. Your home can me nice and clean but if if someone walks in and stands on a hugly, dirty carpet, that is not a good look. After winter season, those carpet took a beating, therefore it is time to refresh those with a new one. Voilà my tip of the day. As always, you did a great job on this video, Garrett, it is always a pleasure to see and hear you.
I literally just purchased new flatware and a bamboo flatware storage unit. Also just threw out the random hand-me-down cookware. Gradually replacing plastic for glass. Donating discarded items, of course.
Like all the advices especially a clean and uncluttered space which is what I am started to try even harder to achieve in the last couple of years. If there is one more thing I could add, it would be the nice bedding like 400 thread+ in a subtle color.
I’m so happy you mentioned not liking the candle smell situation. I like it clean too. And when you have a dinner party, there’s that little food and wine smell around it 😉❤️ I love my Two animal print pillows on my banana silk couches. I love your videos, you are so real and you makes us regular folk want to go and just refresh our homes. 🥰
Love your videos!! 🥰🥰Great advise as always!🧐 Clean windows and frames is a thing for me, clean sliding doors makes your house look fresh. Also clean blinds or curtains. A nice front door mat makes a difference too.. well for me 🥰 Thank you for your videos 🥰🥰
Amen about the candles! I often see what to me feel like insanely high prices for candles but people talk about them as though it's just normal. Clean is a scent! Also like diffusers for a subtle scent, nothing too overpowering. What gets me the most is anything is sickly sweet. Instant headache. I would add to this list nice liquid hand soap in the bathroom/powder room and kitchen that have their own pump. You can buy plain ones for fairly cheap but it's just something a little extra. Also would add to wipe down kitchen cupboards and especially around any door handles in the house. They can get so grimy over time and it just makes everything look well looked after!
Hello 👋 yes, yes, yes a clean home is a luxurious home. I love freshly mopped floors, you should be able to walk on them all day barefoot and your foot never gets dirty 😂 also cleaning under your upper cabinets especially by the stove. Even if you don’t have the most expensive furniture a clean home elevates everything. Thanks Garrett great video.
I think fresh flowers and real plants (but not too many) in nice vases or pots make a home more luxurious. I also think an organized home always looks more luxurious. Everything should have a place to go… like the remote and car keys. And I agree about the regular maintenance and paint touch ups. I keep paint, compound, and caulk on deck at all times! Makes a home feel brand new.
We always have a project going. Our next project is “upgrading” to thicker baseboards. I had NO idea that dust could deteriorate the paint. I didn’t understand why I could not scrub it off. Now I know. I think paint makes my house smell “new” and that is luxurious to me. 😅.
You keep popping up on my feed and I just keep listening. I’m with you a tidy clean home is everything! Then if there is a very mild smelling candle burning in the powder room when guests drop over that’s a plus for me. But an over powering candle in a dirty house just makes me feel nervous. I don’t want to eat off the dishes!
Thanks for watching! Love it! I'm glad the feed put you in touch with our channel. Please take a moment to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
Awesome video, and Albert is the STAR! ( watched both recent uploads just now) I'm not a mall shopper, but when I'm forced to go, I have to avoid the candle store. If I walk by it, I get a little sick. Essential oils are awesome, but fake sugary scents are just overwhelming. Everyone else seems to love them but I can't do it.
Great advice in your video and your channel reminds me that my home needs some TLC. I think that a nice library makes a home feel luxurious, but as you said, not too much clutter, a nice and tidy library.
I completely agree : ) I also do a deep professional cleaning about once a year and it makes me so happy suddenly my home feels luxurious : ) i love all your other advice as well especially the rule of three. I am now going around my house reorganizing Thank you!!
Oh, Garrett! I am so happy that after 3 years of waiting to find a marble coffee table, I just bought one exactly like your green/wood marble at a estate sale. I couldn't beleive my luck. It's like I have you with me all the time now❤ Another great and helpful video. Most of all, congratulations on passing your 40K subscribers. The sky will be the limit for you. You're the best of the best😊
Thank you Garret! Timely advice that makes a huge difference, costs little and takes minimal effort. Also: Open windows for fresh air! Put blankets and pillows in the sunshine to “air out”. It’s free. Buy lamps that take a tri light bulb- it’s like having 3 lamps in one! Many stores that sell pre owned home decor have them for reasonable prices. Replace all flimsy, mismatched cutlery with two sets of awesome cutlery. It’s not that pricey.
Love you mentioning "decluttering!" I am writing a lifestyle book on decluttering and entertaining, as ridding myself of the extra (unloved things) has changed my life!
Great advice as always, Garrett! Especially about gauging the amount of open floor space when you enter a room. I hadn't thought of that as a component of minimizing "stuff," but it seems so true.
Yes! He also said once that a space feels less crowded if you can see the baseboards so I made sure mine were visible and it made a huge difference in my small home for sure
Absolutely, a home that’s clean and not cluttered, so you can relax. I think homes with amazing organisation in place look luxurious ; it’s something I am keen to learn how to do well. regarding scents and candles. I love having fresh air from open doors and windows, baking smells and flowers. I was never really a candle person but I purchased sets of waxed covered battery candles and have never looked back, one of the best things I have purchased. I am strongly against scented candles and burning oils, if you have pets in the house. They are extremely toxic to our fur babies. I have two dogs and three indoor cats and I will not buy real candles or even have those air freshener diffusers in the house.
Thanks again. This reminded me of all the things I need to do around my house. I just cleared my calendar for the next two weeks to get started with cleaning and decluttering. I am doing one room at a time starting with the 10x15 ft front porch. The main project is 12 one hundred year old French doors, (1 door, 2 sidelights, 3 transoms and 6 screens) Peeling paint, dirty panes, crumbling screens and rusted hardware...what fun! But it is what people see when they visit and sit in the livingroom so it has to be done. Wish me luck...
I love a beautiful bar whether in a beautiful piece of furniture, on a cart, or a even atop a console. Sparkling clean bottles, artistic labels, and colorful vessels, love it. Set off with lovely soft lighting, that says luxury, old Hollywood movies. Even a decanter and cut crystal glasses on a small table is more than enough to to set off my luxury meter.
Great video. Would you be able to do a vídeo how to pick side tables. Example, does it has to be the same shape of the coffee table? Or the shape has to be depend the shape of the area? Square, oval, etc.
Excellent advice about keeping everything clean! My personal trick is spraying a little lightly scented linen spray in between washes/cleanings for drapery and shower curtains. It’s not overpowering and helps the room feel a little more fresh. :) Edit: lol, I just got to the scent part of the video. We’re on the same wavelength!
I’m thinking of the color pallet, trying to stay with 3 or less colors per room. Hopefully blending from room to room. And limiting things with advertising/ labels on them & the colors these things are. This sounds easy enough but I’m not quite there yet. I use to just buy what ever I liked and then I was surprised it all didn’t go together. Duh. Now I’m offended when certain products I like are bright & clashing. It’s a process. I agree with you about everything, especially cleaning. Even if you don’t have the money to get new design things, you can clean, maintenance & paint. I mean dust walls, wash walls, repair walls, touch up paint. Even shampooing upholstery. Just clean everything so much, it really helps.
This is so funny - I just bought some fresh spackle yesterday to patch in a few nail holes! I also am guilty as charged of buying a candle because I saw a YT'er rave about and now I'm like, what am I going to do with this thing? :) When I want to tackle a project my first thought is, it needs a cleaning first - and decluttering usually follows suit! One of my favorite videos from you thus far - thanks!
OMG! Caulking the kitchen counter/backsplash is on my list for this weekend! Agree on everything. Having a home that reflects who we are is luxurious to me. We have interesting, high quality items (pottery, carved wooden items from Nepal, aboriginal artwork) as well as pieces by the artists we know. Every item is carefully chosen and special. (There are a few more kitschy trinkets my husband collected in his travels - those are proudly displayed in his office in the finished basement. Win-win.)
Thanks. I’m sure they are nice, but our home is very clean, and smells so with that very light touch of linen smell. We don’t use candles and diffusers as I said in the video. 😊😊🐶🐶🐶
