this started to get interesting when my melodies began wearing revealing outfits to places like the grocery store, but i knew things had gotten completely out of control when my melodies started slapping old ladies on the train
You've probably already been told this before, but for the FL Studio users out there: a bunch of the stock plugins in FL Studio can do this! Harmor, Sytrus, and any other plugin that uses the really fancy envelope editor.
It works too, if you use Serum in FL. Just use the LFO Tool and switch the match to BPM, Trip and Dot off. So you get the Hz-Control on the rate knob :)
Great! I always thought this was done by modulating delay time (which caused glitches)! This was popular when minimal techno was on the rise in early 2010s. Thanks, this is a real eye opener for me!
There are many approaches, and definitely modulating time on a delay makes sense. In Ableton, try setting the Delay to "fade" mode (not "repitch" mode) and then automate the time, keeping the wetness at 50%. Could be good!
This is such a great technique, thanks for sharing. To add: Any synth plugin or device that doesn’t have its own looping envelope can be modulated with (for example) and LFO device from Live‘s modulator devices. Map the LFO to the Decay parameter and macro (for example) the LFO speed.
you are like a goldmine for me : i was able to do good basics but i step up my level now with all your information that you give : very clear and straight to point ! i love your video ! hope you will do more on reason :)
I actually got some help with a problem with a pad I was working on with this one. It was kindof cutting of clipping after three for seconds, I wanted this swelling bubbly kindof "vibrato" pad and almost got there. I realised I hadnt set the filter loop setting right. Now the problem is that my Microfreak is paraphonic and im stuck with just playing 4 notes at a time max. Still love it! I allways get lost somewhere when creating sounds. Most of the time it is a simple problem I know the sollution to. A reminder on youtube, a cup of coffee or a fifteen minute walk in the sun is often the sollution. This tip seems great to work on live! Now I have to annoy my band mates, until one of them uses this live on one of the pad sounds.
Glad to see your channel growing quickly. I'm slowly moving away from EDM but picking up lots of great tips anyways! Side note... I need that shrimp art.
Wayyyy back in 2005, I was in love with Tippers' "Surrounded" album. One song he had was Tear Strips Off. I now realize this was the technique he was using on one of the lead synth lines. I always thought it was some creative delay. Damn he was doing that shit almost 20 years ago. Edit: the song is Forty Winks, not Tear Strips Off. Both are my favs on the album
MAN tipper! That takes me back! I havent listened in so many years but remember being completely and utterly mystified and stumped by how beautiful and complex it was 😁 thanks for the memory!
I can't agree more you guys. He's remained one of my favourite and most influential artists. Esp. Surrounded album. Even when listening to it in stereo, those sounds and melodies move more around my head. Its magical
Oh and another just brilliant video Oscar. THANK YOU BROTHER. I've been dicking around with production and djing off and on for most of adult life. I finally find myself in a space where I'm gonna take my sound to the world hey! New computer on the way and just so inspired. Really appreciate your work.
This is a new channel for me. I don't know why it took so long for this to come across my path. Live these videos. Keep producing. Be good to one another. Much love.
The unbelievable amount of work you put in your videos shows and i just wanna say thank you. Im not even a producer but im a techno dj and your wisdom is very much appreciated.
I love a bit of ratcheting, sounds great on the Tanzbar for beats and the Moog Subsequent 37 I can get some seriously good ratcheting stuff out of it, especially in the editor!! In fact it’s actually really easy to put ratchets in on the hardware sequencer for the Subsequent37 itself too. Good work man.
Even though I had no idea about this technique I'm recognizing it instantly from all of the hundreds of euro melodic-techno tracks coming out in recent years. Pretty cool!
Wow, someone sent me a couple of your links on the Billegal discord channel (following a minor meltdown about all my loops being boring and annoying). Got to say both of them are super interesting and the teaching style is to the point with no messing. Subbed with bells on, keep it up!
A M A Z I N G this takes me LOTS of time in FL studio and the results are not even half good... Keep on the GREAT work, man. Your channel is going to skyrocket for sure! Cheers, Alex
0:23 yes thanks for the subtle comment about my melodies - wait, how do you know? As always, appreciate the insights and coaching - very well-crafted content, sir.
brilliant!! I've had never though about looping pluckier envelopes... I usually would use looped envelopes as funky LFOs. Amazing vids! techno tutorial deep cuts
Very great tutorials. Another fun thing to do in lieu of drawing in automation is to throw an LFO device on it, set it to random (or S&H) and map it to your decay macro control for infinite variation.
Never seen loop envelope used this way, cool tip! They have a nice new feature in Bitwig 4 as well that you can do midi rachets really quickly and easily in the piano roll. It's even possible to set probabilities for individual notes so you get much more of a generative music thing out of it.
Hi Oscar, I love the channel and appreciate the quality of the production and the tuition. You, Sir, are an excellent communicator and imparter of knowledge. If you started a Patreon group I'd sign up a.s.a.p.
I like the Ableton and my Medusa (not only because is heaving the Loop Env). I have to say both are like Dynamite in kid's hands. Appreciate you for this channel, your involvement and energy invested in content. Regards
@@shemmmusic Of course they are. Just giving my couple of minutes for others, who need or want to decide, when should they watch (now or ""later"", unfortunately)
Noob producer : How come such a simple melody sounds so good? *Classical composer* : "Well, you see, I started piano at the tender age of 4, and [innate intellectual gibberish for 30 min] ... I graduated with a degree in post-modern harmonic orchestration from Berklee last year." *Electronic producer* : "Oh that? Just some ratchetin' for ya..."
perfect explain. i released 13 songs, but i never used the wavetable and this techniq. i will do in future !!!!!! Great Stuff and Great Channel, you explain very good! SUBBED
Great ideas, thanks! This sounds really great! If a higher-tier VST doesn't support envelope looping, odds are that they have configureable LFOs that can do a similar thing. For the modulation, one possibility I like using (maybe because I'm lazy) is a Max4Live LFO in random mode; this will work for changing this parameter here too.
Absolutely right. With LFOs you sometimes don't get as much control over the envelope shape, but you can definitely get into similar territory. And setting up an M4L LFO to randomise the macro is a super cool idea to generate change!
@@OscarUnderdog It depends on what the synth makers think an "LFO" is 😁Phase Plant, Vital and Serum for example have "LFOs" that can be used as envelopes, function generators, sequencers, etc. But yeah, for basic shape LFOs, you're absolutely right.
8:05 vital info - unlike commercial VSTs which put Reverb or Delay on every preset to sound large, Ableton instruments don't include the Reverb or Delay so that you can add your own, so remember to add!
