Poppa T I worked at RadioShack for 5 years during the early 2000’s and you can’t imagine just how right your comment is. One time we had a “regional loss prevention specialist” come to our store because of some “possible employee thefts”, me and my manager literally stole and sold close to $15k worth of shit on eBay EACH and they could never prove any of it. Well, the loss prevention guy continually used two phrases, nothing for nothing and forget about it but he said them like a, you guessed it, fucking New York mobster. The guy was decked out in yellow gold and diamond jewelry, including an Italian horn pendant, a very not cheap Armani suit, slicked back perfectly black hair and so much VERY CHEAP cologne that it would choke an asthmatic to death. He threatened us in his only special round about way. He didn’t get a fucking thing out of us but we sure as fuck robbed that store blind 🤣🤣

The cheapest thing of all was what I used to do with bandpass subs for casual customers. Bandpass sub enclosures hide a lot of distortion, often to the point where you smell clipping before you hear it. I just tucked a peizo crystal in the headrest or the roof liner and connected it in parallel with the sub drivers. It only detects gross distortion, but on a music signal it will give you enough warning that you should not smoke your subs without knowing you are pushing your luck too far.

Sweet project! =) A evolution of this would be a smaller transducer that you can pinch between your teeth. Bone conduction works really well in noisy places. The frequency range is also wide. Example; stick a spoon in your mouth and softly bite down on it. Then lay the end of the spoon onto a table. =) Bone conduction FTW! Greetings from Sweden.

A very simple circuit of a piezoelectric transducer of 25 cents and few resistors in serie to it is doing the same job for detecting distortion on bass signal.. connect that combo in parallel to the amp output and once you hear a buzz fom the piezo you know there is distortion, that's it. Piezo can play only the HF and it is tolerant to high voltage.

Something I learned through research, this can be done for sub amps on the amp output if you just take a tweeter out of an old home speaker that has the capacitor on it, the capacitor filters out anything below like 1khz at least and as soon as you start to clip you can hear the tweeter making a high pitched crackling/screeching noise, and if you really wanted to you could run a long wire to it and mount it on your seat beside you if you have the gain turned up as high as it’ll go, and that way if a bass boosted song comes on, you hear the clipping and can turn it off
@EMFAudio

This method also does lows, all you hear is the distortion, none of the signal. Some might say this method is better at lows than highs.

DerTechnikKanal no it actually doesn’t. It doesn’t detect it as solidly as this does. Besides that the tweeter with the capacitor isn’t capable of testing for distortion I. Your head unit. As cheap as these are and as easy as they are to build, this is the way to go. And yes I’ve tried out barevids way he should in that video. Besides, if you’re trying to used the tweeter and cap to set up your sub amp you are hoping you have the right cap to capture the sound of the signal that clipping distortion creates. It’s not as simple as he made it look.

I have only one question, did you have a dummy load connected to the amplifier during the test? Because if you are testing the amplifier without a dummy load, it's going to clip at much higher output levels so technically when you install the amplifier in the car and connect speakers to it, the speaker impedance is going to drag down the the voltage rail's and begin to clip much earlier to which you would still have a problem...
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 3 года назад
The dummy load makes more or less current, not voltage. In practice, as long as you're using the amp at or above lowest recommended impedance you'll clip without a load before you do with. If you're operating below recommended impedance, it will clip sooner. If you're experiencing otherwise, it's because the source volume is different, which is also why you should always use your ears.
@PeterMilanovski
@PeterMilanovski 3 года назад
@@EMFAudio I think that you will find that once you start drawing current through a load, you will get voltage sag especially if the power supply isn't up to the task or you happen to have a bad ground. But you will clip much earlier with a load than without! Could potentially be a future video test? The more that you load down the amplifier, the sooner it happens! It gets much worse with some amplifiers so I usually recommend to stick to the better brands unless you understand the amplifier at it's circuit level which I have no problems with. I still remember my first car amplifier, a Realistic 50W x 2 back in 1987... Subwoofers weren't even a real thing back then but I had two 6x9 speakers with their tweeters removed in an isobaric fourth order bandpass enclosure, I very well knew what was possible from way back then! I may be over 50 today but the boy inside of me is still there and keeps me young at heart! Man! If only we had Google and the tools we have today way back then...

I certainly can't tell the tiniest bit of difference. What am I supposed to be hearing? I wish he would have actually described what to listen for or maybe turned it up more for an extreme example or something. Easy enough to build, already have more than I need, maybe I can tell a difference in person rather than crudetube

Ok so I’m having trouble in the fact that I realize I bought one percent tolerance with 1/4 watt will I be ok or do I need to order the stupid individual five packs of the name brand that Rockford suggests I’m having trouble finding 1/8 by 2% hopefully someone can help I’m new at this part of car audio always been one of them dumbass that just bumps and never thought about clipping and hoping to step my game up some

The wattage you can go higher but not lower, the tolerance you can go tighter but not looser.

How much power can handle this setup? Can you 5k set on this?
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 4 года назад
I believe the limitation is 100 volts, so it's not so much wattage as rail voltage. 100 volts @ 4 ohms isn't the same power as 100 volts @ 2 ohms isn't the same power as 100 volts @ 1 ohm.

Nah gangsta it don’t work that simply. Gotta have some circuitry in there that can detect the actual change in signal and allow current to flow when that change occurs.

That tester won't work for some of us. You need to have good hearing. My left ear could not hear the distortion. I was listing with my Sennheiser ear buds. My left ear also can't hear crickets chipping. I buy 1000 crickets 1k at a time. I know I'm not the only one. So please update with a led. Some of us need the gems. I'm only 43. Being in the military if we did not help my hearing. Great video

I’m right there with you but not as bad. I have tinnitus from the Polish Army doing a controlled det on 350lbs of HME. They did the det less than 500m from the tiny COP they lived on. It was nuts. They gave a 5 minute warning over their PA and then 45 seconds later were getting showered with dirt, rocks and shrapnel and no one could hear a thing except that awful WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound that you hear after some Polish numb nuts try to blow up their own COP...
