Make Your Top Game Oppressive | Jiu-Jitsu Positioning

Your top positions should make the person on bottom struggle, if not panic. While there are times to lull the person on bottom into a false sense of security, typically it is a good idea to be oppressive with the pressure and control you establish over them.
This video discusses how better to transition to and control your knee on belly in order to get a usable reaction from your opponent. I hope this offers some details and insights that can be of use in your game. Let me know if so!

I find myself using knee on belly quite frequently, this will definitely be implemented tonight at practice. Thanks for the video

I usually don’t feel like I’m secure on top, and usually end up in side control so this video was helpful.

I just love that sick move where you go reverse knee on belly and spin right into mounted triangle. When I watched that video about triangles from everywhere it was love at first sight. Been using triangles all the time.

Smooth transitions, nice post. Recently received my second stripe on my blue belt and feeling much more fluid chaining techniques, although much of my time is still on drilling and polishing the basics. Cheers guys, hope the coming year is a good one.

Amazing videos, great teaching points, and easy to fallow. That switching of the knee actually worked.

Love the content. I'm only a blue belt with 3 stripes 150 lbs and I manage to keep guys 200 lbs in place with knee on belly and good movement. What I've noticed about the upper belts or those more technical in escaping is that they'll threaten the straight arm bar when you grab behind the collar which has lead me to grab the near side sleeve for control. I've had good control and it sets me up for the arm bar if they get sloppy.

Awesome technical stuff. I wish you had an e book that had high light links to your videos. Like stuff to do in different mounts. My auto teacher did it. The book was fifty dollars and its the best book i ever purchased. Reading about all your tactical moves is worth alot more than 50.00

Great instruction thanks Eli! I had trained mma for 3 years and started training at a large BJJ Gi only gym 2 months ago, not knowing the culture on my first rolls I tapped some Blue belts and 2 Purples, I proceeded to get rompa stomped by a brown belt, he had 40 pounds of muscle on me ( I weigh 185lbs) and he submitted me with this very move, the pressure was ridiculous as he had his knee in my sternum. We are great friends now !

What do you think is more oppressive? Knee on diaphragm or knee on sternum?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 5 лет назад
I think it depends to an extent. I would tend to say diaphragm because it’s miserable and a little more constricting. Personally, I like to use more shin and ride lower abdomen - it’s exhausting and helps fold the bottom person more... just for me anyway. Not saying it’s the best for everyone.

Don't know if I'll get an answer, but is knee on belly viable or recommended for no gi or in an MMA context in which there's striking?

Black belts under Royce Gracie have adopted the blue sleeve instead of the red to denote Helio Gracie jiu-jitsu and differentiate it from the IBJJF.

Yes. Not as effectively, but cupping the back of the neck or base of the skull creates similar pressure.
