How tough is it to be a makeup artist? Realllll tough at times and one of the things that can just make us want to give up at times. Why can't you seem to get people to pay your price? Well here is PART ONE This video will explain why this may be happening and what to do.

this is perfection. when you nickel and dime your clients they nickel and dime you. I live in a place with booming bridal industry, and lots of makeup artists, after having come from the NYC market where I worked in television. my rates are higher than most here, and while clients aren't necessarily used to paying my rates, as I have stood my ground, and built a great reputation, I am finding QUALITY clients who want to work with me and are more than happy to pay my rates. Year one was hard establishing a new standard for the industry here, and I got a lot of "you're out of my price range" , I was discouraged and considered lowering my rates, but now I am looking at a full book of people who not only respect me, but are "super fans" and willing to pay my rate.

Such a great point about the lashes! It's like when a luxury hotel charges you for wifi. You're already spending $300+ a night, why do you care about $15 wifi charge? Because it ruins the EXPERIENCE.

I also think that clients are starting to finally see thru the self taught instagram artists that have been undercutting the industry, and are separating them from the experienced trained artists. Youll get what you pay for!

The issue I run into is "Hi omg I love your work I'd love to book you for my day! Can I get a quote for x amount of people?" So I send them a quote (prices are on my site) and then they say it's too expensive or no response at all. 🤦‍♀️

Ally Voshell I’ve found that never sending pricing via email/text and scheduling a phone call with the client has given me a way better success rate. I get to answer all questions and go over what they’re looking for ect. They get a feel for who you are as an artist too, plus they’re are a lot of scammers out there so you know you’re dealing with a real person lol Hope that helps 💕

Honestly I would do something over the phone, Skype, or an in person consultation. Where you can find out what your client wants. Once you find out what they need, then you can start to justify your prices and explain why you have the rates you have.

This has helped me tremendously. I live in an area where I don’t have a Pro MUA to ask for guidance/mentor ship. And RU-vid is littered with “MUAs” talking about trends instead of the industry. I’m noticing I’m running into a lot of hagglers, it’s insulting...since my skill level is definitely a reflection of my god given gift for art. I always complained about the client but never looked at MYSELF! It sounds pretty foolish as I type it now ...but I get it! I complain about the demeanor of my clients, but ignore how some poor habits I’ve created are self-sabotaging! How I present myself in person with every client, is my workspace inspiring and neat, my site frequently updated, is my social media professional. The answer is no, I can be transparent with myself about that. I love the industry and I want to continue to grow and learn! THANK YOU! I needed this.

you're on point (as always) I tell people all the time they need to be sure about the skill set they are selling is matching the images shown. How you present your work is how you get booked. I tell makeup artists, models and photographers, this all the time and it just doesn't sink in. Its one of the reasons I am updating my work at the moment; redefining the message.

Lauren Caputi ooh that point is so interesting. The first girl in our friend group just got married and that’s so true; all the other girls are forming an impression of the professionals on hand and making notes for their own weddings, and some aren’t even engaged yet! An engagement in a friend group definitely has a domino effect and everyone else follows suit soon after😂

I'm not a MUA (in fact, makeup isn't really my thing) but I am a knitter so I took a chance on your video to see if it could be applied to a different industry. So happy I did! You are looking good with your radiant skin ❤ A "price shopper" will probably not become a client and if so then high chance the annoying kind which tends to leave bad reviews. I know what you mean by being cheap. I am also never paying full price unless it is something I value. We need to show our individual value to the client. Once they get it they will pay full price or we aren't in their price range at all which is then okay to accept that this person never was a potential current client but who knows, maybe in the future. The restaurant metapher was very good. I never saw it from that perspective. I will keep it in mind when I will improve my portfolio. Thanks for having you back on youtube 😘

Wow that depends on so many things so hard to answer that. Ahh let's see, maybe in a small town maybe 100 and in a big city maybe 250 on up and if it's more celebrity-driven 4 times as much it all depends really.

what are your thoughts on the nickel of dime of charging the client extra in travel fees + parking . That on top of their rate?

Hi Fabafter5-yet another great name OK that is a service fee and is standard within the industry. Very much like in business, if the gig is far away and you must rent a car or drive your own, you are then reimbursed for your travel expenses. If they request special makeup--i.e. like they just want Le Mar and you don't carry that-then you pass that cost along to them. Same if they request mink lashes, something that are very expensive, special requests and travel are things you should not have to pay for, regular lashes which are supposed to be included is not something that should be ala carted (IMO) Thanks for watching

@@DeShawnHatcher I was wondering because in my city makeup artist charge for travel fees within the city. So regardless if the the job is 5 minutes away or 30 minutes away they charge that over to the client.

@@MsXtraordinary Hey Fab, Just as some MUA's are charging for lashes some charge for city travel. Technically you are still "traveling" so the cost of that can definitely be passed on to your client. Once you leave your main base and venture to a gig you are traveling. About year 10 for me I decided to treat travel, food, other expenses like I was getting in my corp makeup jobs--they paid for it all. So for me, that was more of a logical and lucrative move for myself as an independent artist when I charge. What isn't normal (on an individual basis is a lash charge (you know) BUT I totally understand where all my fellow artists are coming from with that, just opens up a bunch of "ish" the industry doesn't need. BTW Traveling isn't nickel and diming travel is a business expense. Totally appreciate the dialog though

Great tips....thank you! So as a PMUA is it acceptable to have avantgard, commercial and special effects all on your website? I did not include it because I have not been trained in prosthetics yet. Just basic (ie blood, bruises and bullet wounds).

Hi, I am a fairly new artist in the industry. The place where I live is a place where collaborations between photographers and makeup artist and bloggers are growing. While we all get the pictures there is no monetary benefit. Do you think we should be doing such collaborations to build our portfolios and will it be helpful in future? The problem is that brands have also started noticing such collaborations and expect us to work for free or less rates for their ad shoots and campaigns. They want to pay us less for an add that would make them a fortune in the future. How should we handle such clients? Waiting for your response. Really love your videos.

I’m currently working on my website right now, could you have different categories for potential clients to look at on your website? Or just stick to one thing?
