This video tutorial shows me demonstrating how to do a type of free form casting called bean casting. It involves melting silver scrap and then pouring it over dry pinto beans. For the pendant, I connected two of the casting with small jump rings. . It includes a novel bail as well. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling silver round wire, 16 gauge sterling silver round wire, 14 gauge sterling round wire, 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip in 28 gauge, some scrap silver. I use exclusively hard silver solder, and I use My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. I would rate this one as a beginner project. This video is a bit longer, but is a detailed tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Free-form casting is fun. I'll do a broom casting video sometime too. Thanks for the nice comment Bruce!

That was fun, I enjoyed the field trip outside. So, I have done quite a bit of broom casting, and even rock salt casting, but that’s the first time I’ve heard of using beans. What a great idea. Now that Rio has increased the minimum amount of scrap they will accept, it’s always a good idea to have an alternate plan. The necklace turned out nice, and is quite unique. Now I’m off to try and comfort my dog. The yahoo neighbor has been shooting off fireworks, even though it is illegal within the city limits. Causes terrible anxiety and panic for my dog. Yay, Happy 4th of July.

I was sure everyone had done this before:). Our animals are also freaked out tonight. Thanks Van!

What a cool technique! I have seen broom casting, but not ever bean casting. The shapes of the metal over the beans is really wild. And melting metal is also fun, especially when it's done on purpose.

Very cool. I luv the texture & visual appeal of each poured nugget. Would definitely be up for a video of a bracelet as you suggested and/or a ring. Great video.

Love how the pendant turned out! Casting with the dried beans is a neat technique. So far I've only experimented with water casting which was fun and I did get some great results. I've seen it done with spaghetti noodles and fusilli pasta too resulting in some pretty cool shapes. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you Rochelle! These ones almost always turn out well. I need to experiment more with water casting.

I've not done the bean or broom casting, but I plan to eventually... I have done the water casting, and it's fun... So, give it a try sometime, I think you'll enjoy it. 😊 The pendant turned out really nice... The subtle sparkle of the morganite suits it quite well.

How fun! I've done the broom casting, and water casting (usually just looks like casting grain 😅). I had a thought about soldering on components like the bezel; I think that soldering clay would be a great tool for setups. As always, enjoyed! 🌺🌺🌺

Not a method I've seen before, it gives very interesting results. I would love to see more casting vids. Would coffee beans work and would they smell better? Beautiful work as always Chad and thanks for sharing.

I don't see why not, although it might smell bad like a coffee pot left on a burner too long:)

Try putting them in a cylinder with water donut with pine needles in water pretty interesting shaped I like the idea of being because it creates cavities were you could put stones in them and I have a question if you could help me with overlay jewelry like the whole peas did
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
I like how the cavities create good spots to add stones as well. Thanks for the comment Jake!

I'm not that confident with my soldering I use yellow okra

Yellow Ochre is a good way to prevent solder flow, and many use this technique:)
