Making A Cobblestone Ring: A Silversmithing Tutorial

This video tutorial shows me making a ring with an interesting design that is reminiscent of cobblestones or stone masonry. It has an atypical style wide band. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling silver sheet, multiple pieces of silver scrap. As always I am using exclusively hard silver solder, and I use My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. I would rate this one as an intermediate project. This video is a bit longer, but is a detailed tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Love this look. Into the Avant guarde. Understood all of your old colloquialisms. I'm thinking of a round or oval cobblestone. Glad I won't be wearing high heels. I LIKE CHAD.

Chad, I REALLY enjoyed this! I, of course, had my designing mind clicking away... I imagined using gold and silver nuggets and even flush setting a stone in one of the nuggets! This looks like a cool men's ring, too! This is a great example of why to use hard solder (or even IT for something solid like this) exclusively on projects when you can. Hard solder has the highest percentage of silver, so it color matches the silver jewelery the best. It would be a real bear if you had to clean up all that extra solder - phew! Really fun, love this!!! 🌺🌺🌺. Ps. Flattening and smoothing a big juicy piece like that can be much easier if you sand the piece on a solid flat area on a piece of gritty sand paper. Continuing on to finer and finer grits. The narrowness of a file can make it hard to get the whole piece even, plus it's faster and easier. Just a tip!! And sometimes I'll even put a little bit of rolled up tape on it as a handle. Zoom! POOF! Done sweetly! Oooh, how about gold and silver blobs and then a patina to make black and gold......then bezel.set the piece......(my brain: tick tick tick...) 😅

Thanks Magic Chef. I think there is some fun design potential with this:).

That’s a real nice design, and not something I’ve ever seen before. Its very effective. I suspect it would look utterly fabulous as a pendant in a circular shape with silver and copper shapes mixed……I’m very fond of copper with silver. I’m also wondering if the pieces couldn’t be fused, rather than soldered? Maybe make the pieces fine silver?(itd be a nice way to use up bezel scraps)It would take some really delicate heat control I’d imagine…..maybe too much? It might work for regularly shaped balls tho….*in deep thunk*😂 I think a hammered band might be nice on that too for a ring. It’d make a nice bracelet/bangle focal too, or bracelet pieces connected with simple hinges, or jump rings. One thing I would do with that is to oxidise it(I’m old school and use liver of sulphur) and then buff it back to highlight the textural qualities of the piece. Also for those who have trouble keeping their file flat, when I’m filing a piece flat like that, I put the file flat on the table and move the piece across it. Makes it easier to get a true flat face, because the file face stays still, at least it does for clumsy folk like me, who can’t do straight to save themselves lol.(wrap a little double sided tape around your finger if you need more friction) Just noticed that Flying Chef suggested something similar 😮 *note to self* read comments before blathering onwards 😂

Some really good ideas Pauline! I like the idea of making a link bracelet out of little rectangles or other shapes like this. Might take some time to do it though:). Thanks for the good comment!

Hi Chad, what is the benefit of air cooling over quenching? Great ring, you have given me some really nice ideas if at least new techniques. thank you as always I have learnt so much from you. C
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
The only issue with quenching is I’ve occasionally had something crack if I quench it when it’s too hot. Most times though if you let it cool down a little and then quench it,it’s fine.

I always wonder, is there a point were you wouldn't need to solder? When the balls would melt together, or would that not happen? Love the ring by the way x
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
Fusing stuff together is possible, but it’s really hard to get consistent results without remelting your components more than you would like. Thanks for the nice comment Jen!

Hello, love the channel. I was wondering, what did you put on your jewelers saw before cutting? Was it for lubrication?
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
Hello Daniel! It is a type of wax used to lubricate cutting tools:)
@maryfuhst9464
@maryfuhst9464 Год назад
Would this concept work by using a thin sheet of silver and sweat soldering all of the balls to it at once?
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
That should work Mary. The only thing I’d make sure of is that you pay attention to the disparity in mass. You want everything to reach soldering temperature at around the same time:)

I had someone who wears a square ring tell me it was comfortable.

I have also heard that pretty frequently, so I generally keep some squared off bands which sell pretty well:)
