The air gun really needs a longer barrel. I know that would be difficult given the tools and the time limit. But a longer barrel would provide more pressure build up and more speed coming out the end of the barrel. The ballista would have been more powerful if the power was coming from the limbs not the cable. Which is what I thought Will was going for with the steel cable. But I guess the steel he picked for the limbs was a bit thick and inflexible.
@kozio23
@kozio23 3 года назад
Why longer barrel is difficult? why didn't he just took piece of pipe...
@3darkn1t
@3darkn1t 3 года назад
@@kozio23 to maximise the pressure from the rear there needs to be virtually no gap between the end of the dart and the sides of the barrel. Given the tools and the time he had, it's physically very difficult to do so as he needed a drill bit over 3 feet long to actually get through. He didn't necessarily have the length of material to do it either. @Koloth I would have just run some grease through the blowgun to fully lubricate it for the dart. His issue was friction between the sides of the barrel and the dart itself, not so much the length of the barrel which would have helped more with accuracy than actually driving the projectile. Agree with the ballista point though. I though WIll was going to use the steel cable and electric hoist to force the limbs to bend just to the maximum elastic deformation point as that would have maximised the power and accuracy. Literally just aim the bolt straight to the bullseye.
@j.c.cannon2112
@j.c.cannon2112 3 года назад
To be fair a traditional ballista got its power from coils of rope around the arms, what will make was less of a traditional ballista and more a mounted crossbow, which was a real thing. having the rubber cables be tighter at the rest position (where they are after it fires) would have given it more than enough power. or using an inelastic cable and bending arms might have given it to much power for them to "safely" test.
@wymcoupe9335
@wymcoupe9335 3 года назад
@@3darkn1t Take a piece of pipe and use a sabot on the dart. I could have made a sabot in about 5 min out of the delrin stock he had lying around. Or just a shaped delrin plug at the end that fits the pipe and fits the steel stock. Alec could have been done in 30 min with a MUCH better setup.
@koloth5139
@koloth5139 3 года назад
@@3darkn1t Agreed lubricant would have helped. It would have also made the seal around the shaft tighter so less air could escape around the projectile. @J.C. cannon I wouldn't really call Will's solution either a crossbow or a ballista. It was more a big slingshot. But that is quibbling over terms. It worked at the end of the day.

@AtomikBanane
@AtomikBanane 3 года назад
Since the balista uses rubber bands, the "bow" becomes useless and does actually reduce the power drastically. The angle at which the rubber bands are pulling is way off the trajectory of the projectile. In other words, to get all the power those bands can give, you need to shorten the bow as much as you can so they're attached close to the rail that leads the arrow. That way, the angle at which they pull is almost the same as the direction the arrow goes. Pardon my english La bise from France

I think with a more rigid type of rope and a piece of spring steel as a "cross member" (?) (so that the bending of the steel takes the energy instead of the rope) Will's ballista could've been damn lethal.

Jup, the rubber is the problem, bows work through bow bending, not the rope stretching . He should have used steel cable. But then it could propel a steel pipe through a wall, if the welds hold.
@tomsamper4345
@tomsamper4345 3 года назад
Yeah but you have to keep in mind, this was a bar of steel he was using, doesn't bend so easily, the pneumatic winch might have worked with it if he had a better quick release method, but I would not have wanted to see what would happen when that steel cable would come crashing into his aiming tube, if he had a carved out channel instead of the tube, using steel arms as the energy storage might have worked

It's funny that Will has won most of these using really old school technologies and simple technique, and Alec goes down a rabbit hole of madness! Well done boys! 😃👏👏👏

A lot of the camera angles in this episode had me worried about proper handling of firearms. I don't want to see angles straight down the "barrel" of anything that can kill one of your staff members. Treat this stuff like a loaded gun.

@@kingcobra_9558 Haha I've just seen this. I wish that when a video has a playlist it would say it somewhere in the ui so I could click on it and get more videos from that playlist. What would make this perfect is having some sort of stakes. Like forfeits for the loser or something.

Back in high school auto shop in 1987 we made a Ballista from 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1/4 angle iron for the track and a leaf spring from a 72 Nova welded to a piece of I-beam. Used a winch to draw it back. It would put a 24" long x 1/2"" diameter piece of re-bar through a cinder block wall at 50'. We were told to dismantle it.

I feel like a simple atlatl could've been highly effective for this challenge. Honestly, build it in however long (I feel like not very, it's essentially a cup and ball thing on 2 sticks) and spend the rest of the time practicing. Not to down play how cool and fun these were, it just feels like it ended up being simple vs complex and sparked the thought. Well done on making all our 13 year old selves proud

I like your ballista. I made one and it was lots of fun do i took it to the next level and added a pneumatic cylinder to redraw the cable for rapid fire. Then added a magazine similar to what the slingshot guy made for his bows and now i have a ballista that fires ten projectiles in 30 seconds. Engineering is fun.

When you choose to create a pneumatic cannon in the future with more safely rated material, please reach out to the community. Take a look at the pumpkin chunkin cannons for inspiration. High volume, low pressure dump chambers, high flow valves. All pressure rated with pressure relief valves so you don't blow yourself up. You have access to many materials and tools most of us who built cannons wish we had. You could make one hell of a cannon if you had the right guidance.

I want you guys to finish these builds. For the blow gun they sell an air tank for setting the bead on Semi truck tires. It just blasts around 150 psi in one shot. For the crossbow you could do better on the string, and add a slight recurve to the arms.

We used to use 100psi air to launch "darts" 150' into 4 x 8 sheets of 1/2" plywood. They would go right through it. And were crazy accurate.

I worked at a drum Factory one time to had a warehouse that was over ran with pigeons. We took five foot pieces of half inch EMT conduit and wrapped a big paintball on one end around the opening and then 8 inch stainless steel welding rods wrapped with nylon twine on one end melted with a heat gun to shrink around the rod with about one inch of fluff left on the end to make darts and sharpened on the other end. We were accurate to about 50 yards just blowing with our lung pressure and we would shoot the pigeons from the rafters. It took no time to make and was very accurate and easy to aim and apparently deadly to pigeons.

An Aboriginal throwing stick, its a device used to throw spears in hunting flat piece of wood narrowed at the handle end, a raised notch on the tip, the spear end rest against the end of the raised notch , you then use a throwing action to propel the spear at your target, hand on to the flat piece of wood.
