**** UPDATE! NEW VIDEO WITH CHEAPER AND BETTER MATERIALS: • Cheapest and Easiest t... ****
This is a video on how to use fairly inexpensive hardware store insulating foam to make an archery target for less than half the cost of most targets found at sporting goods stores.
Some parts of the process are not in the video, so here is the basic way to do this:
Materials needed:
Wood or bricks, layed out to make square or rectangular frame (this is where the foam will be filling in, and will make your target core, which is then sandwiched between cardboard).
3 x Great Stuff Big Gap Filler foam in a black can
Aluminum foil
Cardboard scraps, preferably in the size that your target will be.
Step 1: make your frame out of wood or bricks. Mine is wood in the video
Step 2: lay a sheet of cardboard flat and put the frame on top so that the cardboard prevents the frame from touching any of the ground
Step 3: line the frame with aluminum foil or anything else you have that will prevent the foam from sticking to the frame
Step 4: Spray the foam cans into the area which the framework surrounds, leave a little space between lines of foam, as they will expand a decent amount.
Step 5: After the foam expands and cures, give it time to air out over a few hours time or overnight, then you can remove the frame, and the foil.
Step 6: the front of the target will already have cardboard on it from the sheet you layed down before setting the frame on top, so now you just need to tape another sheet of cardboard on the back and wrap the whole thing with extra tape to hold it together well. If the target seems to warp after removing it from the frame just stand on it or bend it into a flatter shape. It's ok to be a little rough on it!
Finally, all you need to do is set stakes in the ground and find a way to mount the target to them. I just used metal railings and hammered them into some soil in a raised flowerbed area, and slid them between the edges of the target and it's tape.

I did the same thing inside of an extra large packing box from U-haul. Works great and lasts a long time so long as you don't forget to bring it inside after you're done. Thanks for the video brother very useful idea.

If you spray with the cans like you do, you get more gas n less foam out of the can. Best expansion is gotten if you keep the can "standing". Good idea none he less

I have done a couple like this. I made one in a 5 gallon bucket and it works well. I used a cardboard box and staked cardboard inside it then sealed it and injected it with that foam and this seems to be pretty good. No pass throughs yet (50 lbs at 15 yards) There is a new one made by lactate and it is more dense. I plan to try that next. You will have better luck if you hold the can upside down too.

I've done this with those foam shell turkey decoys, it does well, do the decoy about a quarter at a time for best results, the middle tends to stay wet longer otherwise. Stops my arrows at 70#.

Two inch thick, 8-ft x 4-ft foam insulation at Hone Depot is about $12. Cut in half and sandwiched under some $6 per foot indoor/outdoor carpet/turf from the same store and surrounded by a wood frame and there you go for under $40. (I should have done a video!)
@AndrewSmith-qj5zv
@AndrewSmith-qj5zv 3 года назад
Have you done that? If so, how is it holding up?
@Buckarooskiczek
@Buckarooskiczek 3 года назад
@@AndrewSmith-qj5zv It’s used as a backstop on which I hang a target bale. It worked well until I went with thinner, lighter arrows...more velocity, more penetration. Arrows were sticking in the plywood backing if I had flyers (Which happened a lot those first two months...🙄) so I attached a thick carpet. Problem solved. It’s served well as a safe backstop for 18m practice.

The window and door foam do not expand that much and remain much softer than other foams. They make this way so the foam do not forc and bow in the door and window jambs. The best choice is the regular red can made for gaps, that foam is expand more and get harder, so arrows less likeli flying through. Oh and next time hold the can perfectly upside down! Otherwise not all the stuff will coming out.

Cool idea! Next time, use a lot of water! Apply it with a spray on the cardboard an each layer of fresh, wet foam. Theese polyurethan (PU) foams dry with humidity, means it will dry faster and expand over 1/3 more! Let me know the result of you try. I will do this tomorrow, this is really a great, simlpe idea, similar to the egg of columbus 👍🏻 greets from switzerland 🏹

Nice going! You can decrease the noise level of your Samick Sage by increasing the brace height and/or applying string silencers. I don't have a silencing solution for the air conditioner, other than turning it off.

Am a little late to the party but might I suggest, if you do go with a foam target again, to use the 4x8 sheets they have over in the insulation area. Get a contact cement in a spray can to glue together. Can put layers of cardboard between the foam pieces. Should be able to make at least 2 targets if not 3 this way for a price 30-40 dollars.
@E-BikingAdventures
@E-BikingAdventures 3 года назад
The spray adhesives don't work on those foam boards. It disolves the foam. I would try the cheapest construction glue(polyurathane) or silicone tubes.

Your supposed to give the can a good shake and hold it upside down when you spray, and moisture helps it’s expand more.

That is how I repair my 3D target inserts after I've shot the heck out of them. I clean out all the debris and spray that stuff in from the front and the back. But I must say, it needs to cure for 2 days or so or you'll end up with the still wet stuff on your arrow. I learned the hard way. If you use too much, your 3D target will look like it has serious tumors. You can either saw it off with a hack saw or just leave it. It doesn't matter unless you care about the aesthetics. I've been doing this to my same target for about 6 years.

The coolest thing is it stops the arrow. I was using quarter inch plywood and a small box target and when I miss cause I'm new the arrows go threw the wood and destroy the fleche. Using a 50 pound recurve and a 40 pound compound the 50 bound at 28 inch draw I get 40 some on pound.

I would try to get someone with a compound bow or crossbow to try it and see if it still works. You may want a layer of two of old towels in the middle of that foam to help with stopping power.
@stevecady421
@stevecady421 5 лет назад
That's what I do. I've used both compound and crossbow. Of course crossbow does penetrate further. But it's all about the density of the foam and adding materials suitable for stopping.

Thanks. So could probably make some alterations for higher poundage bows. There's a huge difference between a 30# recurve and even a 50# compound. Found that out the hard way.

I use old construction plastic, like the type for vapor barriers etc. crumpled in a old animal feed bag or wool bail bag, this makes a waterproof-ish target. The bag fabric is self sealing. You can also use burlap fabric. You have a good idea though. Did it stand the test of time?

@zolartan4442

Red can is a hell of alot firmer. Expands more. Its a crack filler. Blue can is a softer less expansive foam used to fill around windows/doors without messing up the frame alignment. Orange is a fireblock, not worth the added cost to use for this purpose.
