First and foremost thank you for your service. I love the Thistle and Clover Florin look anyway, and this took it to a different level for me. My name is Christopher Francis, just a normal civilian. I came across your RU-vid Channel, then your etsy store because of the COVID quarantine. I have dabbled with making bead (gemstone) bracelets for myself for a few years. I have a 8.5" wrist so for me to buy one off someone, I would have a nice bracelet with a big section of empty and this didn't set well with me, so I learned a (and am still learning) how to make and design them. I then came across a cool leather tether necklace with an awesome hammers copper pendant and instantly thought "Hey, I can do that too!" Needless to say, I have spent HOURS the past week or so watching your videos- along with many of your colleagues- on hammering metal and making rings out of coins and doubloons and the sort. I find it highly fascinating and looking to get into it myself as a hobby...maybe give one or two to a friend. However, I don't know what I don't know, so keep watching and seeing what CAN be done. I am still in the process of researching good beginner tools to learn before I end up spending $$$$ on stuff like the Jasons works suite and the sort. I enjoy your content because it is simple, unique and I love the idea of hand making things like this. As I said, I am totally green on this, but will be diving into it very soon. I cannot guarantee I will get to your level of craftsmanship, but I am sure gonna try. I will continue to support your channel and what you do here as well. Thank you so much for reaching out and please keep creating because people like me crave new ideas to try.

Welcome to the hobby Christopher and I'm sure you'll find many people here to chat with. I'm also happy to answer any questions you may have on your path to learning more. From your converstion seeing your primary hobby is bracelts I believe the next video I do will be on necklace beeds from coin rings. I occasionally get asked by some craftsman like yourself to make what is basically a coinring however with a very thin center not meant for the finger but rather for the rope, leather strip or other of your bracelet where the coinring itself is the main center piece of the piece of jewelry. I never really thought to make a video on it till you mentioned it here so maybe this week I can get that done for you 👍

Very nice, you might want to ask your bank for some regular half dollars as well before you start getting into the more expensive coins. Worse case scenario you only lose fifty cents on a bad fold, best case scenario you can sell it for about $40 to put towards more tools 👍
@redroadrunner1545

Yeah I totally get it. So for my first coins I used clad quarters I have huge coin jar. Then I looked on amazon and bought a lot of world coins for like 14 bucks. I had no idea what I was doing but what I have watched. So with that being said I saw the two shilling and was like f@$k it. So like 20 annealings 3hrs of tapping by hand on the mandrel some seriously sore fingers. Haha that coin is hard to work. Well compared to a quarter. Man I love this hobby. Birthday is in few day I'm fingers crossed I get a stretcher reducer. Fans and ears are done. Lol. Thank you again For your service as well, sir
@PatriotCoinRings

@@redroadrunner1545 That's awesome, I think I watched a hundred youtube videos before I really got into it and no joke, just like you started with quarters only and graduated to fifty (50) half dollars first before I ever tried anything of worth. What I didn't realize is how the quarters and half dollars were more challenging to perfect especially with the lack of tools back in those days, no way to center the hole perfectly (punches didn't really exist so half my rings were wobbly), and struggling through it all without all the tools available today I feel really made me perfect the process. I have since had a half dozen guys working for me (two still do 4 years later) being that I do this as a nonprofit charity to disabled vets and we have all noticed how over time you really do start to feel things in a way that can't be described meaning things like the expanding mandrel, I could push on it several times and just by the tension it has at expanding a coin outward I know "by feel" just how far to go before it splits or annealing, although there are tricks like using a black permanent marker as an indicator of how long to heat silver before it crazes, I just now by feeling the heat and how hot it gets on the copper tongs I use and intentionally don't wear gloves because feeling that heat for us is far more accurate than anyone can really explain verbally - at least that's what we've come to the conclusion of. In any case I do thank you for the kind remarks regarding my service and appreciate the conversation, don't hesitate to ask anytime you have a question my friend.

You'll find there are going to be numerous sources to go to and it would be a long list to provide having collected tools over the last 8 years myself and all their sources but in synopsis eBay and Etsy are good sources using the keyword "Coin Ring Tools". Some of my recommended sources to buy from in the order of novice to expert in this order would be HarborFreight.com, Legacy Coin Rings on Etsy and Jasons.works website. These alone will bring you numerous resources for tooling and well into the beginners stages and beyond of the hobby. Let me know if I can help with anything else and have a wonderful time with it.

Today I had a crazy day where I wasn't even able to make rings but I'm working on that video right now. Further, I was hiring a company that helps make your videos go viral but after I did some deep research into it I found the user can be banned for using it so I've been back paddling and think I'll run this one like we did the last one where I just do a completely random drawing. In short for the coin smith, they have very deep stamping so your antiquing process is a lot easier than many other coins that you have to use a very fine paintbrush and hydrochloric acid to separate background from foreground. They are simply very straight forward, fast to make and an all around popular ring with a lot of bling to it. Glad to have you join the community bro, if you have any questions feel free to ask. Mike

+john pace Hey John, I just got the photos of your work and wish I could share them here for you, you do really good work especially for someone new to the hobby. In all sincerity it's very difficult critiquing anthers art but with what I saw I have a suggestion you could really use and I'm pretty certain you aren't currently using. Looking at your edges you are using a hand held deburring tool which is needed but has very choppy looking sides, I can see where you are actually grinding over the reeded parts and the cut side (where your cut hole originated) it could use straightening all of which you'll fix with this simple, inexpensive and invaluable tool (one of my most cherished tools for the trade and no, I make nothing for this recommendation). You have to get yourself a mandrel that attaches to a power drill which will completely smooth out the inner edges of your rings and on the cut sides (opposite of the reeding) will polish it to a perfect round side people will be blown away by! Take a look at me using it here.... Hey Mike, great tutorial. One question. After the initial fold, was that a swedish wrap die and push follower that you put it in? If so, what size was it? Thanks.

@PatriotCoinRings 7 лет назад
+papajoe529 Thanks Joe although I know on this question I'll be of little to no help because I buy nearly every tool when it comes to coin rings and own every sized dies I can find which yes, many are swedish dies. I have dies typically angled at 7, 17, and 25 degrees on average so the one I may have grabbed at that moment in the video, I can't recall. I guess I'm a bit spoiled to just grab which ever one "feels right" at the moment and for the shape I'm working with. What I can tell you is this ring is typically done with the 7 degree die because it looks better straight walled and not curved.

@PatriotCoinRings
@PatriotCoinRings 7 лет назад
+fernando pacheco good hearing from you. As for the "liquid product" I plunged my ring into I wasn't sure if you were talking about the Patina process for antiquing or the quenching process after annealing so I'm going to list both. During the making of the ring and after you fire a ring known as annealing its dipped in an acid pickle bath seen at @5:00 which is about 2 cups water to 1tbsp Sparex2 Acid crystals ( www.amazon.com/Pickling-Compound-Sparex-2-1-Bag/dp/B000HYMPZW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502411923&sr=8-1&keywords=sparex+2 ). Then at around @14:07 I'm aging or antiquing with a patina known as Liver of Sulphur which I only use 4 drops per 4-7oz water ( www.amazon.com/Liver-Sulphur-Gel-Ounce-Bottle/dp/B0058ECYYS/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1502412049&sr=1-3&keywords=liver+of+sulfur ) The Sandpaper used is typically the cheapest I can find and in fact I often buy a lot of my sand paper from the dollar tree where I can get large packs for a buck however the more high end paper you see me using here especially good for wet sanding a mirror finish is from a company called Gator and 3M would be my second choice ( www.amazon.com/Gator-Finish-Waterproof-Sanding-Sponge/dp/B00U1J9TUW/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1502412395&sr=1-1&keywords=gator+sandpaper+2000 ). The link is for a 2000 grit sponge and not sure why there isn't a link for sand paper but in short I buy it from my local Lowes Hardware store ( www.lowes.com/pd/Gator-6-Pack-4-5-in-W-x-11-in-L-2000-Grit-Commercial-Sanding-Sheet-Sandpaper/1000013876 )

Michael Been doing rings for about 6 months and have actually sold a few and customers were very happy. I receive more interest in clad coins then silver. Seems people are cheap lol. Good for me because I could use the experience. Was wondering if you have any tips tricks or voodoo magic in regards to getting clad to have some type of decent patina? Love your videos by the way, they are great source of information for newbies like myself.
@PatriotCoinRings
@PatriotCoinRings 6 лет назад
+Jeff Gilroy Thanks bud, appreciate the visit. I actually I was looking last night and see I have 68 more videos I haven't uploaded yet because I Just haven't had time to edit them...lol I just tend to record when I think of something helpful in the hobby or want to record a special coin, etc. but to answer your question about what to use in the patina process I tend to keep two things in stock. My favorite is liver of sulfur gel which you can find on amazon or ebay. It works with most all metals whether it be copper, silver, nickle or other and stays on pretty good while you work the coin with a nail file, steel wool or sandpaper to get the look you are looking for. The next I prefer to use is Hydrochloric acid (also sold as "silver black" on ebay). When you dip your coin it nearly is instantly oxidized in a patina color but you can't leave it more than a couple seconds as it literally eats the metal if left too long and while it does oxidize other metals it wipes off super easy except from pure silver which is why I typically only use it on .999 silver coins. It's much faster, it's darker in color and looks great when done right but it took some learning that would take another video here to explain however in synopsis, .999 silver only should be dipped for just 2-3 seconds, then dipped in a water/baking soda solution to neutralize the acid for just 5 seconds, then dip in plain water slowly to get the now alkaline off it otherwise the reverse happens and again peels the patina off. It sounds like a lot but in under a minute a .999 pure silver ring is ready to work on. Those are my two favorite oxidizers to use and you'll pickup methods over time of your own on what works best for you as everyone has their own method they prefer. Hope this helps though and was some what what you were looking for in tips :) Take care
@PatriotCoinRings
@PatriotCoinRings 6 лет назад
Oh yea, in regards to low budget ring buys, I too get a lot of those but honestly for me I'm in my semi-retirement and don't really do this for the money as much as it's just a hobby I enjoy, make a few dollars on and like to see how excited people get over the art of my work so I don't gouge with high prices. In fact that's worked out to my benefit because I also with no advertising at all get about 10-20 orders a day on average and if you consider these less expensive coins can be made in less than a half hour once you have all the right equipment and experience it does add up. In many cases coins like this one "if I'm not recording and talking about it" really takes me under 15 minutes to make now and although I sell them for under $30 (typically) that can add up.

Those are Nylon push rods and Nylon shaping cones which I love far more than any other aluminum or brass alternatives typically seen because they won't damage your dies or coins. I've had them for some time and don't think they're sold anymore (or atleast I can't seem to find them anywhere). I have placed an order with a company to have these made myself and by coincidence should have these available by next week. If I get the time I can post them for sale and if you like, I do ship worldwide. Let me know if you are interested and I'll post a link as soon as I list them.

They are availble in the UK and as far as I know he ships worldwide both the 17 degree folding cones and the push rods..

Yea, I found mine on ebay in the US but haven't seen them there for sometime (they may be there now, I haven't looked), but yes I love them. So much better than any other metal push rod and I haven't scarred anymore of my dies since I started using them.

I actually just finished up sending you a reply email and sincerely, you've got this down and believe you do as good of work as anyone can. Your edges were really smooth and clean looking as well as rounded off nicely, it had a nice patina finish, the reeding was cleaned up really well and the clear coat set it of really nice. It's awesome to see what you've done and with repetition you'll just keep getting better and better as you challenge yourself with other world coins. More importantly like you mentioned about your son having given up is that you'll now be able to go back and hopefully not only teach him how to do it properly but maybe you two will have a new father and son hobby to do together. The memories would be priceless!
