I was asked by a friend who loves to kayak to make a Greenland Paddle from cedar. This was a fun project, lots of use of measurements and using hand tools was able to practice on my use of handplanes, spokeshaves and layout tools. The paddle turned out great and the finish looks awesome using several coats of Teak oil and a wax finish. Hope you enjoy the video and leave me your thoughts in the comments section.

Hey Jason, I really appreciate that you use handplanes, spokeshaves etc. I am fine with other people working with power-tools etc., but I also prefer to do it the "silent" way! 🙂 Greetings from Vienna, Austria.

Thank you very much! There is something satisfying about hand tools… unless you are under a time limit, then power tools saves some time! Thanks for watching

Hey Jason, nice job. From my perspective there is nothing more gratifying than the rhythm and action of a well sharpened hand plane making fine, even curls on the floor.

100% agree… and there was a lot of curls on the floor from this project. Made the shop smell great however. Thanks for watching

I think your paddle is too thick. the thickness should be fine-tuned between efficiency and strength after sea trials. Your paddle should be in very stiff condition. the peculiarities of a greenland paddle are lightness and flexibility. your video is very well done very explicit.

Nice build! If you end up making an other one, I would recommend you make the edges of the blade much thinner and sharper. The better the blade cuts through the water the better. I usually aim to make mine just 2-2.5mm radius all along the blade, even around the tip.

Good tips, thanks for letting me know… definitely keep that in mind for the next one

Ji Jason, after buying my first Greenland paddle I got into this crazy idea of venturing into making one myself. Among the many video tutorials on RU-vid, yours is the best, especially regarding the sizing and marking part! Where I live, however, there's no cedar, but only spruce, fir or larch. Do you think they'd be ok?

Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked the video. Yes, I've seen paddles built from pine as well. You need to find a good quality board with very few knots. Maybe glue one up even. And you will need good protection as pine does not have good weather resistance. Use a Spar urethane finish

Nice build. Just an fyi you can get a spare blade for one of your two planes grind it to a curve create a scrub blade. Set the frog back to open up the throat and hog off loads of wood quickly. 4 hour would be more like 1. Use the current blade once you get near the lines. I use hand tools almost exclusively. Once i found the scrub blade idea jobs are so much quicker.

I do have a spare blade for my larger plane… sounds like a great idea! Thanks for the tip, much appreciated

@@JasonHedrich the smaller plane would be a better scrub but it will work on the bigger one. Have fun. I'm about to make my own paddle next month.

@@davidbald128 yes, just watched a video on how to make a scrub plane and they recommend using a #4 or #4-1/2… can’t wait to experiment. Have fun with your build!

Hey Jason thanks for the video, it helps a lot! I'm currently working on a paddle from Douglas fir which is a bit heavier than I'd like but I think it will work out. The next step is shaping the blades to the octagons but when I weighed it earlier today It was still at 1,6 Kg. I wondered if you know what weight can be expected at this step or how much lighter a paddle will get once the oval shape of the paddle is established. I don't need an incredibly light paddle since Its more like a practice but staying below 1Kg would be nice. It would be awesome if you could help me judge what I can expect from a Douglas fir paddle :)

Congratulations on making your paddle. I didn’t weigh the paddle at each step of the process however. Depending on the length you made yours, the final weight will be in a range. I think you might be able to find final weights online and compare it to yours, but again keep in mind the overall length when comparing the totals. Happy to hear that you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching

A paddle made of cedar comes in around 1kg or 2.2lbs… you can expect a bit more with Douglas Fir, but you seemed to be right on track for the final weight

@@JasonHedrich thanks for the reply! I was researching a bit and everybody kept talking about 800gramms so I worried a bit that mine would turn out to heavy.

Hi from Australia. What I can't work out is the loom is elliptical. Is the wider dimension of that shape parallel to the wide plane of the blade, or 90 degrees to the wide plane? Any help from anyone, please.
@JasonHedrich

90 degrees to the paddle face
