So I've been wondering about a small woodturning stove but didn't want to spend a lot of money buying one and they seem expensive. Trawling youtube i found out about hobo stoves and decided to have a go. The can used was a single serving soup tin. really please with it as a wood stove for making small meals/water and will use this as part of my kit. The big 'un made from the bbq chimney will be great for boiling larger amounts of water around a campfire - the ultimate hobo stove.

Also for adding more hot coals into the BBQ when you are doing a long cook. Like pulled pork or something. Some cooks are more than 8 hours. You need to add hot coals to prevent the temp going down

you never burn your meat in the flames, so you warm the coals with your tool

The little DIY fuel tablet explained on youtube made from little tuna tin or similar and corrugated cardboard and wax possibly with some fine sawdust is useful in comparison for boiling water in about half the time of stick fuel.........with only problem being the soot on the bottom of the saucepan or cup.....

It allows you to light bbq without using lighter fluid. Better tasting food in theory.

The BBQ lighter funnels air up in a more confined space giving a faster hotter burn. Also as mentioned you don't need to use any lighter fuel or firelighters. I bought one in Tesco although I haven't used it yet. I got it as I bought a load of charcoal from Lidl that was nearly impossible to light! It took forever and that was with firelighters and fuel gel. It just kept going out. :-)

It makes lighting coals easier (instead of stacking a pyramid) and speeds up the time it takes to get the coals hot!

Lovely to see someone from the UK. You actually used something I have seen in Tesco's. I also thought what is the point of the bbq starter.

The idea is that is its basically a rocket stove and the chimney effect means it should roar like hell and then you can dump a lot of red hot coals in the BBQ and then put more fuel on top. My BBQ doesn't have holes in the bottom so can't really get much air, this thing should avoid that issue. Might have been a good idea to have tried using it first before you cut it up, but with that kettle you needed something to let air through. Also good to light a BBQ with good old wood and no charcoal and nothing special... I'd forgotten till now I was given one years ago (not from Tesco) but mine has a narrower top than the bottom that the one you show, not sure if that makes it any better or not though... I'll have to dig it out and have a go too, since its a good idea. :)

The taper can should work better, from what I`ve gathered. The taper is suppose to make a difference in the draft effect going through the can. I`ve used these for years to start my charcoal. Pays for itself saving on lighter fluid

you got that right Jack!!! I just use newspaper and leaves and twigs, no charcoal or charcoal fluid, and good ole hickory and Mesquite firewood chunks I break up so it's all free!!! I use an iron skillet!!!

I got a BBQ chimney with the intention of doing the same. Mine has a grill inside instead of just a metal bit with holes so you might even be about to do small bits of meat on it. I agree it's actual intended purpose seems incredibly silly.

Good ideas. Nearly bought the BBQ lighter myself as they are such a bargain. I want a biomass stove with a grill so I can have food grilled in wood smoke/with wood but they are about 140 in total which is a lot to justify 🤔

Like the BBQ stove. Making hot water is key in camping, the faster the better. Flames up around the kettle handle prove to be a hot problem?

that video would have helped a lot of people too very quickly have such a crucial survival skill...........for various events.......if the world goes bad and gets really rough with no power grids and all the other events associated with that you can still have Hygienic clean water for washing and hygiene events.....with nothing more than dry sticks!!....no shops too rely upon that may have shut from a Pandemic Virus...or bomb scare death threat WE even had terrorist style Lunatics here at Coast breaking in to local electric barbecues and wiring the plates up too ELECTROCUTE members of the unsuspecting public...........just trying too cook some food for themselves!.....and the constant vandalism of the other public facilities too make the public miserable.....was never ending!!.....so well done you just saved a lot of people from sad sack existence.....no need too be depressed from what others may have done.

Have you tried putting feet on the cans? Maybe put some chicken as a base 1.5 inches above the base. It sucks in more air and heat doesn't get transferred to the ground.

...8:57 mark....yahhh...I was dying to speak up...Everybody is spending an hour or 2 making these "rocket" stoves...."hobo" stoves...when Weber makes these commercial....charcoal lighting chimney stoves for $10.99....to $15.99.....to $23.99....whatever size you want....shipped to your door by Amazon in the States...I got one in my garage from 2 years ago I bought for $16.00......yet people are killing themselves making Green Bean can hobo stoves that are out- bested by these already made stoves....!!!!....wtf.....The advantage to using it to light the Bar- B- Q is that you don't have to use lighter fluid which sometimes gives an after- taste.....I have had after- taste with hamburgers, so this was a vast improvement...

Wow, only a fiver.... Slap a well known outdoor brand or badge on it and call it a base camp stove and watch them go for £100.
