Making a LED Matrix with 3D Effect

This video shows how I built the LED Matrix with 3D Effect. The grid of the LED Matrix consists of 192 rhombuses. Each rhombus is light up with one LED. WS2815 LED Strips are used. The diffusor is a Polypropylene foil. The front cover foil is made with a cutting plotter.

- T-slot aluminum profiles on back
- controller Wemos D1 Mini Pro with ESPixelStick Firmware 4.0
- level shifter 74HCT125 to convert 3.3V logic up to 5V
- animations made with xLights
- SD card slot to save and play back animations

This was an incredible video to watch. You are extremely talented. I've been toying with the idea of making something similar to this after seeing the Govee Hexaglide Pro kit. I'm even more keen to attempt this after watching your video. I don't have access to the tools that you have but I do have a 3D printer, so I hope I can replace some of your steps with parts that I can print myself at home. Thanks for uploading this video 🙂

Thank you for your kind comment!🙂 The most time consuming step was making the grid. Most likely I will build a very similar LED-Matrix with a 3D printed grid. But before this I will finish an ongoing project. 😃

I make very similar things-rhombic triacontahedra with custom LED PCBs-and everything you did here is excellent. Would love to see a video focused on new patterns, especially those involving cube illusions.

Can we use black unplasticized sheet to cover individual LEDs?

The advantage of black pvc is that less light is transmitted through it. But black pvc is less reflective. The rhombuses would not lit up evenly, especially in the corners. That's why I would still apply a layer of white lacquer to increase the reflectivity.
