walking into a jo-annes and buying the entire bolt of tulle is a power move
@hollis.7905
@hollis.7905 5 лет назад
Amanda Waters when I worked there I preferred when they bought the whole unopened bolt, because measuring, cutting, and refolding more than 4-5 yards of tulle is like the worst. Cottons and apparels have much more structure and body to them. Tulle is so light it does what it wants. Also if you lose track of your count, you have to start all over again. Also if you know you need a LOT of tulle, you can special order it. I had someone buy like 10 bolts of 20yds of tulle once.

A lot of people underestimate how much tulle they need-even Angela, who knows a LOT, did. I remember a few years ago when poofy tulle circle skirts (calf length) were a thing... we (I used to work at Joann at the time) sold the patterns and people were shocked that to make a full looking tulle skirt you needed 15-20 yards. Since 20 yards made a bolt, there it went! I also used to laugh (to myself) at grandmas wanting to make full tutus for their grandkids with just a yard of tulle. They’d be back soon, and I’d keep a straight face as they asked for more.

@@MissCathexis What a great comment. I took all forms of ballet for 23 years -- I don't have a ballet body -- I'm too tall, short legs, long torso; knew it would never be a career, but I loved it -- so I have always been enamoured by the Russia ballet company, who make their own shoes and tutus -- I watched a video not too long ago and was shocked how much tulle it took -- and that they used stays on the rough bottom layer to hold the waist tutuos up -- I can image how much it took to make swan lake and the sugar plumb faeries -- I bet you were glad when they bought the entire bolt -- cutting tulle is the worst !!! I bought 100 % cotton crochet thread, the thick stuff like the Peaches brand, from JoAnn's to make an afghan I saw on Pinterest, thinking that's what they used -- the very nice clerk tried to talk me out of it and to buy the Caron instead -- when I went back the next day to exchange all but the one I started w/, she was very kind and did not say "I told you so," even though I assured her she was absolutely right and I was absolutely wrong.

As a vintage and antique doll collector I really loved this video seeing Barbie come to life, so to speak. I can't wait for others videos like this one and would love to see which reproduction barbies you have. Also if you're looking for Barbie outfit inspo some of my favourite classics are "Plantation Belle", "Dinner at eight" and "orange blossom". Cant wait to see what outfit you recreate next.
@lestranged
@lestranged 5 лет назад
I had "Dinner at Eight " and it was always my favorite. You could use the gold lace overdress on top of other dresses, as well as the orange strapless jumpsuit it came with. I also have and love Golden Elegance (1963).

also for the stiffness in your petticoat i had an idea. My grandma and my mom used to tell me about how back in the day the girls would take their petticoats and starch them. then they would take them out doors and hang them on the line upside down with all the layers separated so that they would dry super large and super stiff! might help :)

Such memories: I have actually watched this more than once because I love the way you adapt things as required. All sewers have to do this. When I was 16yrs. old I made two skirts for me and my friend Cynthia. I made them up in my head including, like you, (of course not as complicated as yours) the ruffling. The skirts were 3 tiers, each tier a little deeper than the other and they were made of a light cotton in the same colour as your Barbie. We were so proud of the way they looked and I wore a cap sleeved Broadriangles (spelt wrong) blouse with a Peter Pan collar, which I also made. I am 78years old now so thanks for my memory. Vera.

Oh, wowsa !!! You did a wonderful job. I was born in 1956 in a very small town where just about everybody's mother/grandmother sewed. Here are some tips if I remember correctly, of how they overcame some of the same issues you had -- although your finished product really is beautiful -- they actually made each strip a shorter width than the one above so that it had a cascade effect, and added lots of extra length of the ruffled tulle, which people sewed a loose bobbin and pulled and pulled and pulled; your method is so much better; one I am going to try -- also, I know this from painful childhood memories of having to wear the darn uncomfortable, scratchy things -- they put a very stiff crinoline underneath, but you made the petticoat and did a great job -- I also don't remember them fitting the bodice as you did, but I do remember different people using different materials -- such as sequins across the top or small tulle ruffles around the top of the bodice -- those were the days of rhinestone jewelry, and a lot of people put a rhinestone broach at the center of a sweetheart neckline -- also, for proms, bare shoulders were against the rules, so people would somehow sew in using the soft tulle little shoulder pieces attached just in front of the arm area to the back -- does that make sense? I think you could make a good chunk of change producing these for barbie dolls and selling -- you could eliminate the lace in the skirt layers entirely -- which could give you extra bucks to buy more adorable outfits like the tapestry one you modeled -- gorgeous !!! Again, you did a wonderful, wonderful job and your result is spectacular!!

Do you realize how talented you are??? Been following you for a while . I am am a fashion design graduate from AIP (many years ago) and I am also a milliner. I do a lot of period costume research to get inspiration for my hats. I saw one of your earlier videos and immediately subscribed. So not only do you have MAD sewing skills you have a wonderful eye for design. Your ability to see a look in your head and recreate it is something no one can teach you. Your finished product is not only beautiful it’s also historically accurate. You do amazing things. Keep it up!
