Friendly neighborhood art teacher here. Acrylic paint was probably the best choice you could have made for this project. Oil paint will slowly eat away at fabric over time unless you first cover that fabric with a ton of Acrylic gesso. You did great!

Fantastic to know! I assume that any clothing i may want to paint on, say with acrylics, would have to stay unwashed forever? or was and expect the paint to go away..? [acrylics because this is what we bought as a set with a canvas and 3 brushes (to randomly paint for relaxation, we are not painters, so we have no idea)]

@@sapphirecamui6447 Actually, you can wash acrylic painted clothes if you mix the paint with fabric medium first (can be found at any craft store) and heat set the paint afterwards with an iron. It might still start to fade and wash off over time, but it won't crack or flake off.

Will the paint stay on the fabric though [it didnt seep into the fabric, which could have given it some flexibility]? There seems to be A LOT of paint ... which means it is a [relatively] thick layer and thus rather prone to breaking up and crumbling away. Once that starts somewhere it wont stop ...

@@Muck006 I think that since the skirt sits so far away from the body and won't be moving very much with it, it probably doesn't need to be that flexible. In a large, structured skirt, it probably won't crack for a long time

Angela: "I haven't used acrylic paint in 10 years or so..." *Paints on hella expensive fabric.* Me: *Too afraid to use the paint I have lest I ruin one page of a cheap sketchbook* Yeah, this helped me get out of that rut. I just did a color study with my neon acrylics after watching this. It feels good, especially with all of the quarantine stuff going on.

I am very confused by the cherubs as a design choice. What did that consultation look like? Some Rich Lady: Mr. Worth, I need a fancy dress outfit. Worth: Of course, Madam. Did you have a theme in mind? SRL: I want to go as a peacock. Worth: Oh yes, that would look wonderful. We could make a train out of peacock feathers to resemble the birds tail. SRL: And I want to go as an Italian Renaissance church ceiling. Worth: What? SRL: Obviously the two themes work seamlessly with each other.

As a seamstress by trade, and a painter by choice, I can 100% say I would have gotten the anxiety sweats even thinking about painting cherubs onto a pattern piece. I commend you SO HARD for diving into that head on. I would have sat on that for a good 3 weeks thinking about how to tackle that haha :) It looks amazing so far, your attention to detail is unparalleled.

I totally get what you mean - that was a big part of why I dove in without investing too much time into practicing (I did three practice cherubs on poly satin off camera, the day prior...which all came out better than the final ones, go figure). If I waited too long I would have been to intimidated to try it!

@@pauline1809 What's it like sewing something? It's a lot of fun. When you know what you are doing, and how to troubleshoot something, it's really amazing. That evolves into little highs like a drug addict, like when you make a pattern from scratch and all the seams match up perfectly, or the fit is spot on, to finding the perfect fabric, the texture and color etc. It takes years of hard work to get to that point, but once you know it like the back of your hand, it's just fun. That said, much like Angela, I'd have to say I like sewing for myself 20 times more than sewing for other people. I tend to be a little more relaxed when I have to trim a 1/2 off something because something didn't line up, but for someone else, I would probably take it apart and start over. It gets stressful. So to answer your question, it isn't for everyone. But if you like to do it just because, then you should do it :)

@@pauline1809 Depends. If you work in alterations you specialize in one thing, if you work as a tailor you specialize in another. I did alterations and it wasn't my favorite but if you find your niche' it's fun. 9 times out of 10 though if you are sewing for a job, you aren't sewing what you want to be sewing in my experience. I'm just a home sewer now. I do it for fun for myself.

I am an artist by profession. The struggles you described with the acrylic are real. It’s disadvantage of quick dry inhibits workability but there are mediums that can be added to extend dry time so you have more time to play. They even have clear mediums so you can add more transparent layers to your work. You did very well with the materials you had I would have worked in sections as well it yields better results when blending, but you figured it out on you own. Working smaller I find harder than larger you have to try harder to get the shadows right in my opinion. Also cherubs are brothers not twins getting identical results is one to the hardest things to do as an artist. I paint Mardi Gras floats and every float has two main sides. They never look 100% identical. SO YOU GO GIRL.

I paint as a hobbyist, and I absolutely LOATH acrylics. I like to say they're the worst of both worlds- they dry too fast to be blended like oils, but can't be erased or watered down quite like water colors.

I've done stenciling/painting on fabrics before and generally the recommendation is to add fabric medium to the acrylic paint so that it becomes more flexible and not so stiff on the fabric so that it can drape with the fabric more easily. I've heard that acrylic paint can crack on fabrics if not mixed with the fabric medium due to the difference in the materials' flexibility although I've never tried it without the fabric medium so I'm not actually sure. The fabric medium definitely waters it down so that the acrylic paint isn't as thick which could present a problem if you're looking for more color pay off. It also takes more time to dry so it could be beneficial in that regard (for blending and such) but would definitely increase the turnaround for a project like this. I also don't always use the ratio that the fabric medium suggests and go with the consistency that I feel would work best depending on the project. I figured I'd share in case anyone was interested in trying this method.

Acrylic matte medium is honestly my savior. Otherwise I feel like I'm working with snot. It's so much cheaper than oil and I don't have to worry about the fumes.

Theatre chick here, popping in to give you a small tip if you ever find yourself needing to paint fabric with acrylic paint again! There's a product called "Textile Medium" that you blend into acrylic paints to make them slightly flexible and lighter weight, so they act more like screen printing paint and less like, well, art paint. It's fairly easy to find (the stuff I use I found at either Joann's or Michael's with the little tubes of craft paint). A few drops is all you need depending on the heaviness of your paints, so a single bottle can go a long way.

She's actually recreating Charles Frederick Worth's peacock gown commissioned to him be Empress Eugenie. She's not recreating the project by Cathy Hay, which was made by Jean-Philippe Worth, who was Charles' son for Lady Mary Curzon.

What I dont get is all the people who think Cathy has been working on her peacock gown for 10 years. No..... no she hasnt. That dress is just one of the simply repeatable yet customizable patterns that are made unique and amazing by fabric choices and embellishments. It didnt take him 10 years or even 1 year to make. Though it was made out of very expensive bead and wing work fabric made in India. It's not THAT complicated.

If you paint with acrylic again I would recommend a retarder medium to mix into your paint! It will thin the paint but also SLOWS down drying making blending easier without needing to wait as long as oil. Also don't worry too much about not knowing how to paint cherubs, renaissance and medieval artists are notorious for not knowing how to paint babies, seriously they look like tiny buff men, so really you're at least just as good as them

A lot of cosplayers and costumers have a pet Worth or, if youre like me, have multiple pet Worths. Choosing a dress for a ball would be a difficulty since I love a lot of Worth gowns that are super simple yet so elegant and meticulous in the design.

Honestly, I probably would have just wimped out and done the cherubs as printable iron-ons of someone else's art. Hats off to you for much more creativity and determination than I have. 👍

i'd have wimped out by painting them on separate pieces of cloth to be ironed on with glue-bead paper, and hope that the added dimension blended in with the star patches. i got secondhand nervewrack watching her paint them directly on the fabric

I remember trying to cut out a pattern, using very expensive fabric. I had it all pinned and ready to go, and just sat for 5 minutes, scissors in hand, thinking do I want to cut this. Very nerve wracking, but once I started, it became easier.

those cherubs are AMAZING. and here's the weird thing, JakCosplay on youtube made a peacock headdress as part of a wig for a contest one year, and she filmed it. i feel like it might give you a place to start for the structure at least?

No the wierd thing is that 3 youtubers did/are doing a peacock dress. Cathy hay (with bernadette banner and others helping to get the embroidery done within cathy hays lifetime) s doing the HEAVILY embroidered wlWorth dress used in a ball in india. She is doing this much less complicated but equally beutiful Worth dress. And a third in india took time last year to do the disney peacock dress (which may be loosly inspired by the Worth dresses and oversimplified) this one is completed and beautiful in comparison to disney but pales in comparison to both the Worth dresses.

And on your honeymoon of all things :( I think the workers are just hardened by dealing with wannabe designer college students all day, which I totally understand. But there are SO many shops in the garment district that I would rather support that have much nicer and more accommodating staff!

This dress screams classic Grecian Hera. Peacocks were her favored creature. It's gorgeous thus far. For the gauzy overlay, might I suggest using two types of fabric? You could layer silk chiffon and tulle for a fanciful effect, but the tulle will help give it body and fluff 🙂

That worked out very good. The cherubs look sweet. A lot of the ones i have seen painted in Europe look even more " cartoon" like than your cherubs. At least you didn't have to try painting the extra creepy floating head cherubs on a set of wings. What were they thinking back then is all i can think of when seeing those head on wings children.

I think that you did an amazing job of painting the cherubs especially when you aren't comfortable or practiced in painting. You are also extremely brave for taking the leap and painting them yourself instead of trying to find an artist or student artist to do it for you, not to mention the stress you endured knowing the cost it would incur if you made a mistake that you couldn't fix. 👏👏👏👏👏very well done! They’re adoooorable! I’ve just finished my first oil painting, which includes a baby. And I’ve felt the "well, how can we make this not look like a demon baby?" all too well. For context, I’m a semi-experienced artist, tried my hand at every medium out there. It took me over 40 hours, spread over 2 months. Which includes drying time. Acrylics were your best choice. If you ever decide to do something like this again, perhaps it’s an option to first paint it on another, less expensive fabric, cut that out and then sew it on. A little less pressure, hopefully.

I've been watching you for years, and I don't think I will ever get over the absolute speed at which you move simple seams through your machine. I've been sewing for like 25+ years and I still feel nervous going any faster than the middle speed my machine can go (I also miss having a presser foot, because at least then when I started to get Speed Anxiety I just... pressed less.) YOU'RE SO POWERFUL.

I think there are even MORE - the book says it was a commonly revisited theme - just no surviving examples of them! As for the title - I'm just calling it what the fashion plate is labeled as. The cherubs were the focus of this video but the project will have 500+ peacock feathers on it before it's finished, so I think it's earned that name :)

Maybe change the title to "a" rather than "the." In this community when you say the worth peacock dress it means something very specific.

@@rosenrot9544 Since there were more than 23,000 Worth dress designs donated to a museum in the 50s (and those were just the surviving designs, I imagine there were thousands more), and peacock feathers were a common theme, I'm sure there are quite a few others out there!

Light boxes are fantastic! My dad gave me one for Christmas a few years ago, and at the time, I wasn't sure if I would use it. But it's been VERY helpful with sewing projects. This looks amazing!

Watching you make this skirt is truly inspirational. All of us nervous Nellies at home hovering over our white sketchbook pages with a sharp pencil and nearby eraser can learn a lesson from your gung ho enthusiasm to have a go. Whether the cherubs and clouds are ‘good’ or not is completely irrelevant. They are fantastic.

There is a book I remember as a kid called The Queen Who Stole the Sky and she quite literally stole the sky to make a gown for herself. This reminds me of that and I love it and all it's cherub butt gloriousness. So, so inspiring and well done!

@@os4021 multiple people are allowed to create the same thing. Cathy Hays attempt to recreate the gown doesnt mean she has sole rights to the Worth gown. In fact, the more people who remake these works of art the more people will know and be inspired to either create their own, recreate the art, or make it in their own style.

It’s mostly because the worth gowns are probably the most documented ones so we have even a clue how to pull it off!

Worth gowns are popular for multiple reasons: a) they are ridiculously gorgeous b) because they were special event dresses and worn infrequently, and then carefully treated, we have a lot of extant garments which makes them extra addictive- you can actually see originals to feed your passion! I think, as you said because worth recreations are popular, that is giving more people the courage to have a go at making them, which is wonderful for armchair dressmakers like me!

@@louisacapell i think i meant that maybe it being super mad expensive and time consuming made it a more daunting task, but yeah we're getting close to her drafting the muslin i think, she talked a bit about how worth sped up the process by having very reusable pattern pieces so the construction was fairly straightforward

I would say they would have been stretched and painted on very thin silk ...a la silk scarf method, with silk paints, then backed with white or beige fabric and then sewn on a la applique ... at least that's how they usually are done in couture, or at least were before laser printing etc coming available.

Honestly the cherubs look tight af. Its always great seeing people just go into acrylics and then like.... following through and finishing a piece!!! Im so envious and sure that I’ll do that too some day........ maybe next year lol
