This video shows how I made a lined IWB (Inside the Waistband) mag pouch for the Springfield EMP & standard sized 1911 .45 ACP magazine. This is the third of four videos I made of a batch of gear for Atomic Cowboy - a new eyewear company. The leather is 3-4 ounce Herman Oak, dyed with Fiebing's Pro Saddle Tan and Dark Brown, sewn with 277 natural colored bonded nylon thread, edges polished with Tokenole, and sealed with Fiebing's Resolene (diluted 1:1 with water).
If you'd like to pick up a small batch of hardware to build your own mag pouch like this one, I have a package of snap components available on my website:

► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible. I normally order 7-8 ounce for holsters, 3-4 ounce if I'm lining a holster (I build the whole thing out of 3-4 ounce), and either 3-4 or 4-5 ounce for wallets, journal covers, etc... They will allow you to purchase individual hides
Herman Oak - While I love the leather I've gotten from Wickett & Craig, I prefer the warmer coloring of natural Herman Oak. Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately.

I really love watching your videos. You'd be amazed at how a simple technique you never think twice about is literally so eye opening to me hahah. Like once you drew with a circle template an english point and my mind was officially blown. I am curious what thickness poly bags you use when vacuum molding. I don't think that was mentioned but I also might have missed it. Anyways, great holsters and tips, and can't wait until you are back.

Absolutely beautiful work sir! I've said it many times, but just love that saddle tan color, and even more so with the contrasting brown. That air brush (and you) do a great job applying the dye, looks great! 👍👍

Mike Blust here (Invisible Guerrilla) wondering when you're gonna drop the IWB2 holster video on us. Since discovering your videos and shop Ive made about 7 or 8 of them but I would like to see how my sensei does it haha. Thanks again for all your work and all you've done for me. I'll be getting quite a few more templates from ya tomorrow.

It would help if you spoke and said what you were doing and why during your videos. And what tools you use to do the job and machine's sewing and drill press and type of thread used.

Did you map out and measure all your stitch lines so they perfectly stop on point every time. Thats awesome. Rarely do mine stop exactly on point. Ill have to see about mapping them out better
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 2 года назад
It might seem that way sometimes, but it's mostly just luck. I usually just eyeball the start point, and as I come up on a corner, I might try to tweak where the needle lands. I usually keep my presser foot dialed to it's absolute lightest setting (to minimize track marks). When I sew the liner panels to each other (1/8" thick), I have to pay extra attention to make sure the machine doesn't pull the leather backwards when it pulls tension on the thread. That one got me a few times on this batch. And it was really cold, and my hands were freezing - I just wanted to be done! LOL

What is it that you use on the edges to color them. Would it be dye? Enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing. D

I fill the refillable marker with Fiebing's Pro dye "Black". I was worried initially that the marker wouldn't work well with the dye, but it works great! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great work! Do you dilute your dye with alcohol when using the airbrush? Also, do have any issues when using gum running onto the faces messing with your finishes?
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks Год назад
Thank you! No, I don't dilute my dyes (Fiebing's Pro dye), though that may depend on what you're using. Anything the consistency of milk should spray fine. Thicker than that & it should be diluted. The only reason you might dilute is if you want a lighter color. With the gum trag, I don't usually have any problems but I try to keep it off the faces & only on the edges. But it can cause splotches / darker spots, just like water stains can, so just try not to over apply it to contain the mess. If you're having trouble with your sealer sticking to it, you might be over applying it.

Thank you! I used Herman Oak, 3-4 ounce leather, which I believe is about 1.5mm thick.

So whats the aromic leather mean? Ive seen it in your last few videos. Im sure youve said but most of the time i have youtube playing in the background while i work

Hi Joshua - that's "Atomic Cowboy". I made a pair of holsters & mag pouches, as well as a belt, all for the same order. The customer asked me to stamp his brand logo on the pieces for his marketing use so I engraved custom acrylic stamps just for his items (though I didn't show the stamping process). I filmed everything but the belt. I also have YT or movies playing all day while I work. Keeps my A.D.D. brain from getting distracted from boredom. LOL

Any time I use a sanding drum on a drill press to true up the edge,, I get the edges blown out. If that makes sense? Am I pressing too hard against the sanding drum? It gets so bad at times I just don't like using it. I haven't been able to get my hands on some Hermann Oak leather. Just the various grades of leather from Weaver and Tandy. Both their low and better grades, but not the Hermann, or Wicke & Craig. Could that be the problem? I've heard Hermann Oak is very stiff.
@jeffallen3382
@jeffallen3382 2 года назад
At the 5:16 mark where you are edging off, it shows it real good, but it's even worse what I get any time I use a sanding drum. That's what I am trying to describe.

I know I've said it a 1,000 tines, but I really do appreciate you doing these videos and answering these questions for me. I mean it when I say you are my favorite holster maker!
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 2 года назад
Hi Jeff - Thank you for watching and commenting! Glad you're finding the videos helpful. You can minimize the blow-out by trimming the edges flush with your knife prior to sanding. There will almost always be a little blow-out, but much worse with less dense leather. This is the leather I used in this video, and it's what I've been ordering for the last couple of years. I've been very happy with it overall. www.springfieldleather.com/Hermann-Oak-Premium-Belt-Bend
@jeffallen3382
@jeffallen3382 2 года назад
@@AdamsLeatherWorks I need to just order some and see how it compares. I've just been giving away the few holsters I've done. I've only sold a few belts that I've done so I haven't made the switch yet to buying really premium veg tan leather. I've liked the Weaver Select (I think that's what they call it) and could really tell a difference over the import Tandy sells. I figured Hermann Oak would be that much better. Plus, I'm really seeing that the location of where the leather comes from on the cow itself makes a big difference as well.
