Port area is too small if you are going to power it over 20W below 40Hz. The port will cause chuffing, especualll in dynamic movie scenes. Ive recently built a portable bluetooth speaker with 2 6.5inch woofers (xmax of only 9mm), I used a 110mm (little over 4 inch)port tuned to 36Hz and below 40hz and over 80W of power you can hear the port slightly. (Which is ok, since the portable amp will only be 100W) Small narrow ports also make the port more prone to port noise. I would go over a 5 to 1 ratio (width to height), unless the port is at least 25% larger then necessary. WinIsd is a great free program for modeling drivers under power.

@jimthesoundman8641
@jimthesoundman8641 5 лет назад
@@epiphonesg007 I agree, the port is too narrow. That's why most ports you see are circles or squares. You can even make triangular shaped dual ports in each of the bottom corners. In most speaker design programs, you can play around with the size of the port, and the length of the port, and the number of ports, to find something that works well.

The speaker is awesome , but please remove the fiberglass insulation and vacuum clean the inside. That insulation throws small glass particles in the air impossible to see in most lightings conditions , people can breath that in, and it is dangerous. Sudwoofers move a lot of air in and out of ported enclosures , that's why is not a good idea to put that type insulation in there.

@jonathanstotz1868 5 лет назад
He "lost all credibility" for everything he builds, or just this speaker enclosure? The 'ignorance is bliss' statement seems a bit of a reach, as we really don't know that he wouldn't notice the issue, or that it is practically an issue in this context. Measurements of the particulate matter coming out of the port would give evidence to this, and would be a better metric than "I would panic being in the same room".

My only issue is the size and length of the port must be precise in order for a vented design to provide flat response, and unless a DIY builder like myself had precise plans from a designer for a box with flat port that had been built and tested and tweaked, I would have no confidence in getting this right with this kind of port. Far easier and greater assurance of proper tuning by using a round tube for a port, and round ports can be flared at both ends. If the length is too great for the box size, then I would choose a different box size for the selected driver that calls for a shorter port length, or I would select a different bass driver. I always choose bass drivers that call for a very large box for superior performance, and that usually entails a fairly large vent that is not too long, which avoids the problems of chuff (farting) and port resonance that are the two potential problems with port designed bass systems.

You were not going for the best quality sound, using cheap particle board instead of MDF or Birch is NOT a good choice. Doesn’t matter if you are recycling, you could have used the MDF on the inside instead of the outside as a second layer, and it’s pathetic the you used birch for bracing.

Cool video & I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But I'm not a fan of OSB for any type of finished work. I know that you were being frugal. And I get it, but the look of OSB. Isn't nice looking at all. It's 1 of the reasons it's usually well hidden under roofing shingles. I liked what you did with the sub & the front face. Nice & clean nice paint job a finished look. OSB to me is a raw construction material. Much better served as a structural item, not finished work. I'm sorry if it appears that I'm being tough. But as a craftsman we usually try to do our best. Material selection is a part of craftsmanship. I like everything but that OSB.
