I'm giving you a thumbs up simply because you didn't try and BS us that you built it for $23. Like you I have a shed full of tools (not that I can get to many of them) but even if we have material left over from a previous project, it still cost us money at one point, and I like that you didn't pretend it didn't. All going well I hope soon to start on "the internets most expensive DIY sub build" (maybe not the most expensive, but we are talking a lot of thousands).

@@DIYAudioGuy so would I. I bought the LMS Ultra 5400 driver and 18" VMP passive radiators before TC Sounds went out of business. I have been sitting on them for nearly a decade now. I'm in the process of refining a six sided cabinet for it. I figure there will be about 5 - 6 sheets of 16mm MDF in it. There are a few experimental things I would like to try, like dampening paste between layers. Also tossing up if I want to use dissimilar materials (both MDF and Ply).

I bought 20 of those GRS 12s about four years ago, at the time I think I paid $13 a speaker. I was going to build a cheap subwoofer to annoy my neighbor across the street when his dogs bark. The dogs don’t bark anymore so I didn’t build it. I’m now thinking about building a infinite baffle subwoofer with all 20 of them in the basement and have the port’s fire up into each corner of the living room

This GRS looks very much like the OEM driver from my Klipsch ksw-12 home theater subwoofer. I replaced it with a Dayton classic series 12, which has a much, much larger magnet and stiffer feeling suspension. I was skeptical at first about low end extension, (don’t care about volume,) but it rattles a door in the room at normal listening volume due to being punchy and quick, and yes, it goes low too.
@DIYAudioGuy

I've been using one of those classic 12s for my DIY home theater sub for about 6 years now.
@djijspeakerguy4628

Yeah I think they are possibly the best deal in subwoofers. Instead of getting a new sub, just grab a cheap one at the thrift store and stick one of those Daytons in it! The Ksw-12 came from a neighbor, for free and was not powering on. I replaced a blown fuse and a faulty fuse holder, and it has worked ever since. Perfect sub for the Dayton driver!

@@DIYAudioGuy that sealed enclosure i built is 2 cubic ft, half filled poly just dropped in not stuffed and one layer of the yellow sound dampening on one inner wall. It plays beautifully flat, hits all of the notes with crossover set at 50. The cabinet it is in is an old stereo console from the 70's. Gutted with 2 sub enclosures now built in. Only using the sealed side, dont like the way the ported side turned out, its 2.5 cuft.. i took that one out until I re build for another sealed. I dont like how ported boxes sound in my house, it's ALL wood floors with basement. Doesnt take much power to shake pictures. Downfiring subs, I raised the whole console by adding just 3 inches allaround and left the fancy cut open on front, making it a 4th order. Turned up, I can feel it in my chest, like I'm at a concert.

Budget tip: if you buy quality tools used you can use them for as long as you like and resell later at little or no loss. Blades and router bits are another story, but carbide is a good investment in edge life.

Absolutely! Just have to make sure all the parts are there when you buy them!
@artv4nd3l4y
@artv4nd3l4y 2 года назад
@@DIYAudioGuy You also have to make sure you use them enough to warrant the cost. i.e. sure a 14 inch circular saw is nice, but does anyone really need to cut down an 8x8 at a 45 miter in one pass? I would not cheap out on some tools though like a router, everyone always seems to have a really underpowered one and they're not that expensive. The router tables with easily adjustable lifts are the expensive part, I find the plunge base to be awesome. I built a router table and have hardly used it.

30 yrs in car audio/customz here.. tips - just before u painted it.. use wood glue on moist rag.. wipe it around the outside of box over that grain and it fills/vanishes.. sometimes it takes a few rounds of drying but it'll smooth, then spray it with filler primer (automotive) and sand back, repeat.. then use epoxy based paint for furniture, clear it with polycrylic and detail it.. it'll look like a piano.. you can also wrap it with vinyl and a torch thats low budg

@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 3 года назад
@@kramnull8962 as far as I'm aware you can just glue a vinyl on, the trick is using the proper adhesive, and making sure the surface is smooth because any bumps will show up in the vinyl.

@@kramnull8962 best adhesion possible for iron-on vinyl products like faux wood grains n such OR real grain laminate with wood glue - would be on a KILZ sealed surface lightly scuffed with like a 3M 7447 pad.. Automotive grade or commercial grade decorative vinyl needs a smooth smooth flat sealed surface to adhere longterm and not show flaws thru it. use something like a 3M Ultra Fine 7448 after stepping down from higher grits and use a heat gun on low to lock the vinyl in. (94-110 degrees only) auto vinyl i highly recommend vvivid out of canada its perfect every time for me. hope that helps

i think you might like gelcoat from the boat world if you do alot of these, learning spray techniques is fairly easy (YT).. or even use epoxy/mica countertop/surfboard style art techniques on inserts or accent panels is also a way to take your stuff in all new directions on the cheap.. LED and incandescent panel lighting is dirty cheap these days and can be a huge pop for like $8 off web.. and if you see a car, exotic whatever with a paint job u love.. look up the paint code, hit up an online company that mixes bodywork paint in cans and have at it.. like $34 a can.. theres tons of cheap tricks that yield incredible boutique design results. great vids bruh :-) keep craft skills alive!

I have my eye on these drivers to replace a really nice B&C 18" cast frame pro cinema sub that is disappointing in low extension. I can mount the GRS (4 of them! ;-> ) in the interior wall of my barn loft listening space in a true infinite baffle configuration as their Qts is about 1.0 and the room behind is quite voluminous and only used for storage. This should give me strong bass down to below 30hz, plenty low enough for music. And their lackluster sensitivity should be greatly improved by acoustical coupling from cluster-mounting them, giving me a close equivalent to a 24" driver. I should be able to sell the B&C used and be money ahead, or I can repurpose it for mobile DJ use where it performs really well.

The grs subwoofers don’t handle distortion that well and even if you don’t give it it’s rated rms power you can still cook the voice coils in them if you go too crazy with the volume on a amplifier that’s powering them I tried to free air a 15 inch version of the and it was rated to handle 150 watts rms and almost blew it with just 70 watts rms.

After getting that I go to my home took an old little wooden stool and tied everything on it with a steel wire. Done. Now a subwoofer under my table and I can rest my legs on it too. These subs are now $35. But still worth their cost. I've used them in many projects, they play well up to 800hz so can be used as a woofer in 3-way setups but still hit the low end like a sub. They should be ported at 30-40hz in a 2ft^3 or more enclosure to get that chest thumping effect with just 60-100 watts. Sealed enclosure is no good with these.

Young Mann Anthony here with that question ? Speaker build is 2-2ohm 5-1/4 coaxial & 2-2ohm 6.5 Kicker cvt subs will give you all the specs in a email if needed. What coils and or caps should I be using for a crossover ? Up to 135-150hz for the subs and like wise for the Mids. Speakers will be wired in series. (Like you a Budget build it's what I have in the shop a 2 channel Rockford amp) This is a Ice Chest build FYI.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy Год назад
That depends on how complicated you want to get and how good you want it to sound. You probably don't need any crossover on the coaxial. But if you want to filter out some bass try this: parts-express.sjv.io/yR79L2 If the mids and highs are to loud then you can throw on a resistor to turn them down a bit: parts-express.sjv.io/x97Qbv A coil liked this would make a good low pass for the subs. parts-express.sjv.io/rn7ObR That will give you a 6db per octave crossover with a crossover point around 120 hz. No guarantee that it will sound good. But it will probably be fine for a budget build in an ice chest.

It's amazing how lazy people these days are, my first box was made only using jigsaw and homemade jig for cutting straight lines... Most of the things he did was optional, but you can borrow tools from some shops if you want to do them anyway. If you are on budget, you don't need to use table saw or router. EDIT: Some shops can cut wood for you sou you just need to assemble whole box (and cut hole for subwoofer).

I would have used a rabbit bit to add a step where the speaker mounts so it sits into the cabinet. And FYI, you don't have to include the cost of the machine equipment used on the project. The table saw can be a circular saw which can be a handsaw. Every one of the power tools can be replaced with a hand tool that you can get for a couple bucks at Harbor Freight or a yard sale. Lastly, that box looks way too big for that sub.
