In this video, I build a prototype shave horse out of basic dimensional lumber. I wanted something simple so I could make changes to the plan later if needed. Now will it hold my girth?

You can go down to your favorite boat shop and pick up a long wide roller that probably fit in there and you can download it or you can run on all thread all the way through to where the roller rolls on it for your brace to hold your product down on top of the boy's bench but you can look at them and find out that that would work really good

I forget how many years I have been watching you. This is the first I've heard of the timber frame sawmill shed. So, My Dad wrote some short stories about characters he had met in his life. One was "The Pipe Smoker. " Definitely an intellectual, a pensive sort of person. I'll be interested to watch this build if I can get past my short attention span issues. 27 irons in the fire, you know? Happy New Year from the Ozarks.

Love the content, especially the historic side of it. Have one suggestion though. When making the cuts with the table saw you might try standing of to the side of the wood being cut or using a riving knife for the table saw. If that thing kickbacks the injuries can be severe. Once again love the channel and keep up the good work. Happy New Year.

Love this bud. I’m just about to start a timber frame cabin and needing to build a shave horse. To my surprise one of my old pig farming buddies from the Mountain State has the perfect video! Hope all is well my friend

I would put a cross brace attaching the two legs and the bottom of the base to toughen up the joinery.

On a more permanent one I would think about putting T tracking on the uprights so you could have a bit more control and adjustability on the clamp. I have been contemplating putting it on mine that way I can work bigger pieces at a higher angle and even some smaller diameter stuff at a lower angle of I so choose to

Nice. I would think a sturdier pivot at the bench and the frame? Usually others made look like they drill a hole in the bench and run a dowel into the bench. idk, I didn’t pay attention to the bolt you used in yours so may not be a concern. I’m looking for a design to attach to my existing workbench, but remove when I’m using my bench, your ideas are close to what I could do. I could either add a hinge with a removable pin for the slantboard, or, I saw another crude version that had pegs attaching the two pieces, if I made holes for benchdogs, or pegs for the slantboard that would be simple to put up and disassemble. Thanks again for this video!

Troy, this reminds me of a show on PBS I used to watch, The Woodwright's Shop with Roy Underhill. Are you familiar with that? He often used a shave horse. I went searching, and found Season 34, Episode 10 where he shows three different kinds of shave horses and how they were made and used. Yours looks a lot like the second one he shows, the style used by chair makers in England. He calls it a Bodger's horse. I think it is very cool that you are making one to use on your sawmill shed build. Happy New Year, and God bless you and Kelly and the boys in 2024! 🎉

I have seen others build these, but they never show the prototype. I like that you show us the mark up and the thought process. And I'm with you, Troy, you use it till it falls apart! Which it invariably will but the next one will be the one that lasts. Happy New Year Troy and family, may God bless and keep you all in peace in 2024 and beyond

Enhancements- instead of using smaller bench, simply concave at the area where knees are....leaves "the seat" wider. Also, run a stabilizer from leg cross braces up to bottom of bench....gives legs more stability from "rowing". Awesome job either way!!!!!

@bobcriss600

If I may suggest? A diagonal brace from the bottom cross members up to the bottom center of the bench would add some stability to your horse….. some ‘core strength’ if you will… I’d imagine that repeated pulls with the knife while pushing with the feet and your body moving forwards and backwards would weaken the legs as they are. Otherwise it seems to be a great job as a prototype. Also, perhaps the board you have the hinge attached to (that you would lay the working piece on) could be a bit shorter maybe…. And your uprights that hold the clamping jaw maybe a bit closer to the hinged end, there by allowing a slightly steeper angle for the clamp to come down to= more pressure. And another way to possibly shorten the whole thing…. Nice work though.

I'm very interested in this content. I like your " design/build" approach. I have some plans for my own shave horse, but it's such a personal tool, that the design/build approach really works here to make it a custom fit. I might add a couple more cross braces, one under each set of legs against the bench for added leg support. You might also consider tapering the bench area under your legs to give you more room to sit comfortably, while keeping the width under your wide white bottom, lol. Happy New Year!

If you do a version 2 of the shave horse, I would flair the front and back legs out for more lateral stability. It appeared this version shook easily when you were using the draw knife.

Troy, check out Kris Harbour Natural Building RU-vid channel. He does lots of timber framing. He made a jig out of steel to gauge his pegs. It protects against splitting out the hole when you drive them.

Troy: I would love to see the rehab on the draw knife. Suggestion. I noticed the discharge port at the bottom of your saw cabinet, was a mite full, one might even say it was overSTUFFED . I am guessing that the motor for the saw is located within the cabinet. I am also, just guessing that airflow within the cabinet does not allow for much cooling for the motor. I know at our shop, the cabinet is vacuumed out with a shop vac once a month, to get what the 5 HP shop vac system does not suck out. That job would have gone much easier if Timber had been there to help I want to wish a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to the entire McClung family, and the critters.
