Designing a graduated byzantine chain necklace has been something that I have wanted to make for myself for quite some time now.
In this video I try to quickly show the long process of making a graduated byzantine chain.

Your video short led me here. Thanks so much for posting the full tutorial. I'm very anxious to use my new set of mandrels to make jump rings for this necklace. You did an excellent job displaying the required wire and mandrel sizes as well as the necklace layout. It definitely simplified things for me to take notes. Thanks Tlo good to hear that, know how you feel I am always anxious cutting my precious silver. I always test and practice a lot with copper first to make sure i’m happy with sizes and like what I’m doing. After figuring out what link sizes work for this graduated chain I think the hardest part is having the patience to put it all together … cheers … Nick.

Thanks for that Jackie, byzantine is a very satisfying weave to learn. Great for beginners as it leads on to many other simple and elegant variations. The only problem being chain making can be rather addictive, ending up consuming lots of material … N

Congratulations on a job well done. This is one of the chain weaves l used to make a, Double Albert watch chain for my son. I usually work in brass. Again a job well done.

On another note. I like your take on the hand drill jig for wrapping the wire. Nice. will have to look into that myself. Just made two more watch chains but of a different weave. Keep it up.

Adding a handle to a chuck makes a very useful tool, I use it a lot for all sorts of projects. When I made a video about it I received a lot of negative comments saying it was a waste of time, the only thing I could reply with was “well it works well for me" … N

As you say, there are so many different names, the one I'm doing at the moment is called the Assyrian weave.

Great video! I have made this style necklace out of aluminum and stainless steel wire (without soldering links). But I just started silversmithing, I might try one in silver too!

Hi Chris, yes knitting needles are a great tool for chain making being cheap, made of aluminium allowing to easily be cut up if needed and the small ones come in quarter millimetre increments … N

Good to hear your wife knows what she likes and how to get it. I practice everything with copper first before making any commitments. Could be made in copper first then sent off somewhere for silver or gold plating … good luck with it … N

@Nickscreativestuff had a quick mock up at work last night, used some 5mm jump rings. It looked like a lot of gaps and not much chain but that's down to using thin rings. The pattern was there, its a bit fiddly but I was making progress, painfully slow progress lol

Good to hear you had a go Stu, I tend to spend a lot of time experimenting, testing and practising with copper wire first. I found some 3mm copper wire at a scrap yard awhile back and with my 3mm and down round hole draw plate I can reduce it down to any size I want to play with. Combined with a large choice of knitting needles for varied jump rings it’s true that practice can make perfect … N

Hi Nick I've just got a draw plate, starting with nothing but inspiration. I've a few tools on my wishlist I'll pick em up when I can. Do you have any tool recommendations? I know I need a better torch if I'm going to pull wire, all I have is a cheap little butane one. Draw tongs are coming, and I have a selection of general pliers. Made a section of 4mm rings in 1.1mm copper, about 3 or 4 inches it's solid, looks great it's now a key chain on the misses keys. Looking to get some silver and make it properly, 5mm rings in 1.4 copper to start so I can gauge how much silver I'll need, as she likes the 4mm but I know she'd want a thicker heavier chain. I'll be following instruction and making it all 1 width instead of graduated which is a blessing

Hi Stu, Great to have a draw plate for reducing wire, no need now to be purchasing lots of different diameter wires. If making lots of chains a barrel polisher is a nice investment, there good at getting into all the nooks and crannies of a chain for easy polishing. if you’re going to get into making find delicate chains, there’s some pliers I would recommend. The Xuron Chisel Nose Pliers 487 and Xuron Short Flat Nose Pliers 483 are great for handling small jump rings … have fun … N

That is a gorgeous chain. I could never make something like that. I don't have the patients for it lol. It must have took an immense amount of time to make going from sizing the wire, making coils and jumps rings, to putting them together and soldering them. My attention span isn't that long How long did it take to make?

Thanks for that Mandi, I can’t call myself a saint, but you certainly need the patience of one for chain making. i’ve always had plenty of It ever since my dad encouraged us to participate in massive jigsaw puzzles when we were kids. This has taken me nearly a week to get finished, mostly because of filming and editing getting in the way. if I was focused and got on with it, I am sure I could achieve one of these chains in a long day … cheers … Nick

My absolute favourite chain. I love love these I have about 4 all in the 50-90grams. I'd love a home hand made one. I'll try it with copper and see how I get on it looks like silver is much easier to work with. But silver at the moment is expensive as can be to purchase so gotta wait but it will also give me time to harness my skills on copper anyhow then when I'm able I'll buy silver wires and maybe attempt my own. I do adore byzantine but also always too long I'd love a 17inch one about 9mm. But can't find. Only 22inch the smallest. And then they are tiny tiny like under 20grams. Strange will watch this video 20x or more to really understand how to make it. Even in copper I think it would be stunning

I also admire the byzantine weave probably my favourite, so versatile and leads onto many other variations. I’m very precious with my silver so only commit myself to using it after lots of testing and practising with copper first to see if I like what I’m trying to achieve. Having more time than money, making my own wire seems to save a little bit rather than purchasing new. I bought a silver bar many years ago and I’m still working my way through it … N

@Nickscreativestuff I can imagine though st the moment purchasing silver bars must be cheaper than buying new or recycled silver. I detest paying more than a £1 a gram. I have collars 200grams that cost me under a £100. I think once I have honed my skills I will buy bulk used scrap silver and use that. By the time I'm ready to move onto silver I'll need to buy a rolling mill too so I can get scrap and forge it into usesble metal. Currently I buy sheet copper brass aluminium and copper wires. I've been using currently. And yes like you all my designs will start life as copper and may keep as copper as I love it. Or when finance and skills are inlign I'll purchase some silver scrap and forge that. I have my eye on a rolling mill for under £150 perfect to start off with. But gotta get of the ground and learn how to make the basics of everything then make to sell . Then use thst income to put back in and invest in rolling mill etc. I have everything else almost apart from rolling mill. Oh and a proper anvil

@Nickscreativestuff To be totally honest I appreciate anything hand made thsts not from China or of a conveyor belt. Jewellery is tactile we wear it on are skin we want ti feel the expertise the charm elegance everything aboit that piece. I never get that with store bought. I have also been stockpiling a load of baltic amber too all various sizes to do some beading with and also set into rings necklaces earrings bangles you name it. I adore amber . And silver or copper with amber is just a perfect marriage if you ask me. I get fed up paying the odds or being stung with customs. So I decided years ago I'd buy all the materials and make my own I can never find what I'm truly looking for anyhow especially in amber. So all my items are going to be designed by me made by me and sourced by me. As I know each seller of amber extremely well I know what ny business has supported there families etc. So I have a good foundation if you like. Just gotta get thst energy I need and pain controlled ti get in my studio to start! And oh yes I have about 5 hours of unpacking and sorting before I fan begin too as my studio is just crammed full of dumped parcels

I think your idea of reusing scrap silver is possibly the most economical way of finding material to play with. I once tried buying some from High Street dealer, it didn’t work out as he wanted more than the cost of casting grain from Cookson’s per gram. Seemed a bit pointless unless I was going to keep the hallmarking and some of the styling. I’m a believer in “a cheap tool is better than no tool” so I invested in a budget rolling mill many years ago thinking I would upgrade it one day when needed. That day has never come and the budget mill is still going strong and is fine for what I need at the moment … N

your pile of Amber sounds fabulous a nice treasure to cherish. learning to cut and polish would be the challenge for me although it does look great natural and set with a handmade look. Sounds like you’re in a very unique position being able to receive Amber from source, cutting out all the commercial middlemen must be very reassuring and satisfying. I’ve been meaning to make myself an Amber sun pendant for the warm it would bring. Another one of many on the to do list … N

Hi Carol, i’ve never used gauges for measuring wire that I i’ve made. My Calipers Measure in mm. As conversion charts aren’t very accurate this is what they are roughly … 21, 19-20, 18, 16-17, and 15 … N

i’m grateful that I was brought up using millimetres so easy, straightforward and accurate. I struggle around other options especially tiny fractions of an inch. I make great use of small knitting needles for creating jump rings that step up in quarter millimetre increments like 2.25, 2.50 and 2.75mm ect. not sure how I would convert these to wire gauge or inches … N

I’m sure You’ll get on fine with it as long as you stick roughly to the same aspect ratio for each section. Then it’s just a matter of making sure the transition from one size to the next works well … good luck with it … N

it’s worth trying a few different aspect ratios between the wire diameter and link diameter to get a feel of what you like … I think the tightest this weave will go is about 3.5 … N

@Nickscreativestuff Hello I have a jump ring maker arriving shortly that makes anything from 3mm all the way to 14mm it's so simple in design so I should be able to use it. Hoping even on my rough days when I can't get out of bed I can sit there making jump rings. Won't be able to saw them open in bed but can create spiral part in various sizes

those jumping makers look great, especially if you were going to get in to production work making lots of chains. I now have a massive collection of knitting needles every size possible, good when you need small increments as some of them go up in size by quarter millimetres … N
