Making A Statement Ring with A Rectangular Faceted Stone

This video tutorial shows how to fabricate a bold statement ring that always grabs attention. This project is intermediate level. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling sheet, and 16 gauge sterling round. For this example I used a relatively large rectangular faceted Rutilated Quartz, but different types and shapes of stones could produce some cool variations. This video is a bit longer, but is a complete tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Thank you for making faceted stone tutorials lately! That's been my next biggest hurdle-they're so much more precise and finnicky than cabochons. I appreciate your help as always

No problem Cody. I was super intimidated by faceted stones at first, but they’re not too hard after you’ve set a few. I think round prong settings are much easier than this rectangular one. Thanks for watching!

I had a "duh" moment watching this. I am working on a 8mm cushion cut cz ring. I spent a couple hours chasing it around around trying to make this setting . When I saw you bending the wire around the drawing I said " well duh" why didnt I think of that. The forming is advanced for me but how else do you learn except get in there and try. Thanks for sharing your expertise

I have found to just do the ring onto the cradle and then turn the ring on its side and file the bottom, and it makes the bottom of the ring narrower I mean to file it across the bottom on its side.

Hey there glad to find your video. I was wondering if having nice long wires for the prongs, helped distribute heat so the wires do not melt when you solder? Thanks
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Месяц назад
Hello Ruth! I've actually found that if you leave them too long, they are kind of vulnerable to melting if you're not careful, so just a bit longer than you'll need.

@@chadssilversmithing OK Cool. With just single wires without a basket, Ive been taught to stuff them down into the block but this is difficult to do with a bezel getting in the way. Glad to see its possible as you have shown!

Do you try to make that black mark land in the very middle of that fold?

I'm not sure what you are asking here Ma Wi. Could you clarify?
@evgeniydragondog

I always suffer from making rings for those stones. I tried do this from 2 sheets by sawing and filing, but i cant solder it right. Than i tried to do entire "basket" from solid block of metal. But it takes toooo much time and metal loss. I really need this white block.
@chadssilversmithing

The Magnesia block really can make prong settings much easier. They’re not that expensive, and in my opinion, super handy for multiple situations. Thanks for the comment Dragon Dog!

Thanks so much Chad ! You were asking for suggestions on future videos so here goes ! I’m looking for an elegant way to ‘silverframe’ a piece of woven or knotted fabric (e.g. micro-macrame) of about 1 mm thickness. I don’t want it showing folded edges and of course I guess soldering would burn the piece. Any bright ideas ? Greets from Barbados !
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
Thanks for the question. Could it be behind glass or clear plastic?
@Frigger20
@Frigger20 Год назад
@@chadssilversmithing Well I wanted to keep the organic fabric look and feel to it and at the same time it shouldn’t get/stay wet. Behind a piece of glass or so, it could stay damp and rot. I was thinking of spray resin but soldering would still be a challenge I guess.
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
@@Frigger20 Possibly a shape wedged inside of a slightly larger version of the same shape like one of those frames for holding fabric to do needlepoint? I will think on it:)

Chad, why do you deduct the bottom of the basket with the length?you weren't totally in camera view, love how you explain things.
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
Thank you for the nice comment Marie! Sorry about moving out of frame. Every once in a while I get in the groove and forget I’m filming my hands:). The bottom of the setting becomes the top part of the band encircling your finger, so you need to deduct its width from the length to achieve the size you are shooting for. I hope that explains it for you. Sometimes hard to explain concepts in the comments:)
