I really like when Alan Adler says, "I never really made peace with the bitterness in coffee. I really got to love coffee much more, when I learned to brew it without bitterness". It's a very simple but honest truth of his taste. This aversion to bitterness could be a crucial principle to why the recipe is the way it is. If the main barrier to coffee is bitterness, then simple techniques to reduce bitterness will make it more enjoyable to drink.

I love how everybody makes a science out of brewing coffee with the Aeropress. Well, everybody except Alan Adler. The way he just adds hot and cold water to the drink or even the mentioning of the microwave would totally confuse the self-called coffee specialists ;)
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip 5 лет назад
That is what we like about him. Don't be confused though, he is very methodical, and he tests things out. He just values certain things over others - for example, the temperature of water or "pressing gently".
@VT-mw2zb
@VT-mw2zb 5 лет назад
He got real scientific with coffee, though. He was among the first to use a Brix refractometer to measure coffee strength. Then his decision of "optimal" temperature for "best" coffee taste was done with a group of tasters. Not single individual. Population samples.

@@EuropeanCoffeeTrip That's great. The moment you care too much about the 5ml water too much or too little, or 10 stirs instead of 5, the pleasure of enjoying coffee goes away. I am very sure the he, as an inventor, must have done pretty scientific works to test/validate what works and what doesn't. But once the basic has been practiced, we really have to be more relaxed.

@@LeeRaymondCM This was exactly my situation. I ended up scouring the internet for Aeropress recipes, competition winners, etc and got into the method way too far that making a cup of coffee became a chore that I didn't want to do. When I dialed it all back to the original method that I first used when I got the Aeropress (basically Alan's method), the coffee became fun to make and good to drink again.

I just got an Aeropress and I love it. I prefer the v60 because I get more clarity of flavor and it’s more fun, but the beautifully thought out design of the Aeropress cannot be understated. I get up early, and I’m a zombie before coffee, so I have screwed up v60 brews in every way imaginable. The Aeropress is a fantastic “before coffee” brewer. The simplicity of use and cleaning has improved my early mornings. Everything that comes with the aeropress is intentionally thought out to make life easy. For storage, I put the aeropress on top of The filter holder, the funnel on top of that, and then the scoop, stirrer, and filter cap in the top. The stirrer is short enough to not be able to scrape the filter, but long enough to touch the coffee. I don’t use the scoop, but it is the best coffee scoop I’ve ever used. In short, if early morning v60s are too hard, try an aeropress for those occasions. Everything is designed to make it easy to use without sacrificing quality of coffee.

I’ve been a coffee geek, with Aeropress, for about 10 years, give or take. I roasted my own beans for 5 of those years, then started buying bags of whole bean coffee and grinding them. I own 3 AP units. One of them now retired because of plastic fatigue represented by striations in the plastic water tube section and a ballooning of the section about midway from the top. That fatigue should be expected after so many cups of coffee per day consumed by me and HERSELF. Being a true coffee geek and retired, I make the coffee filters, too. Simply stated, the Aeropress makes a consistent cup of quality coffee - morning, noon, and night. Without hassle or worry. My next project is to use the coffee pucks for growing mushrooms in the basement.

While politicians talk how to make America great again, Alan Adler already is doing America great. I saw Aeropress in any country where I lived or traveled - Persian Gulf countries as UAE, Oman, and Kuwait or in post-Soviet countries, where I am from originally. Not to mention of The World AeroPress Championship! The most important thing for me was the manufacturer's inscription - Made in America! I am sure it's one of the best ways how to make America great again. No need in saber-rattling or propaganda for war, just work as Alan Adler! It’s the best way how to make America great again. Just try to reinvent something American and put an inscription - Made in America, how Alan Adler did it. One of the best way to take on the world, how, for example, as does China. Aren't you tired of Made in China?! In my humble opinion, Alan Adler is one of great Americans of our time.

Just brew hotter and grind a bit finer. Try 90°C and grind espresso fine. Give it a good 20 sec stirr, then plunge sloooowly. This recipe can be tweaked for any roast. Hoffmann recipe works but brews a much more acidic cup that's not easy with your stomach, just like most pour overs. Adler's recipe yields the sweetest, most tum-gentle cup.

Bryon Egan - That’s not much input so let me elucidate. If you are buying ground coffee you’re probably paying $9+ a pound. I shop at Costco and buy whole beans for $4.50 to $5.00 a pound. (My bean grinder was $26 new. You can buy one from Amazon for $14+ plus shipping.) My recipe is 15 grams (28 grams = 1 ounce) of those beans which are ground just prior to preparing a cup. A typical coffee scoop putting two scoops into the AP. The scoop is 7 grams, heaped up a bit 7 1/2 grams. The ground coffee is stirred in the AP with half of the 190° F water and then the AP is filled. The finished coffee is pressed into the cup. Bad coffee is not the result of the AP, it’s the poor quality of the 12 ounce bags of ground coffee you can afford. That is not a put down of your economic condition. In coffee, the lowest price is usually the lowest quality. The higher priced is better, but it’s still a lot higher than roasted beans at $5 for 16 ounces. I recently made a cup of coffee in my AP and served it to a friend. His first comment was, “this is the smoothest coffee I’ve ever tasted”. He was going to get a AP as soon as he could locate one in Virginia. Oh yeah, I made a trip to Virginia last week and brought along ground beans, filters and my AP for my use. He happened to see it and was inquisitive.

Do it reverse. 1 espresso, 2x amount of water of your espresso, one empty cup to hold both, pour hot water first, then pour espresso. Stir a bit. Drink. And yes, it does make difference. Best way is to measure exactly how much you gain from your espresso machine, double it, and prepare cup with hot water and make a shot directly into it. This way you also keep crema on top. I mean beside tasting very good. If you want some optimal ratio, for 7g of ground coffee (sorta norm for espresso), you should get final drink with around 84g or 117g (if you want bigger cup). I wouldnt go over that, it will be as you described, watery. Some ppl ofc like it. Complete top is I would say 140g of total drinkable coffee from 7g. I know that some of finest coffee beans in the world can take that (basically majority stuff over 90 points cupping score) and taste amazing. And ofc, you need good water. Plus more water is added = better must be original espresso shot. Personally I like 9g in, with 18g out and into 36g of water, total amount of coffee in cup is 54g. This way it tastes really really good.

Ludwig TS that’s because generally speaking, it’s a stronger cup than those from other brew methods. It brews coffee similar to that from a moka pot. You can tell by this video that the inventor really likes espresso style coffee, so that is the type of coffee that is produced if you follow the instructions. I don’t know what your personal coffee preferences are or what the ideal coffee tastes like but if you don’t like how coffee made from an aero press tastes like because it’s too strong, you could start by diluting it with more water until it’s the desired strength that you’d like it to be.
