Making And Trying Out An IKEA Hobo Stove

I've been wanting to try the IKEA Utensil Holder for a Hobo stove for years. There are lots of these builds on RU-vid and the fabricators seem to like them very much. Before I put too much effort into the build, lets just put 4 legs under the IKEA Utensil Holder, and take a look at how it burns. If it looks promising, then I'll cut a feed hole in the side and make pot supports for it.
Come see what my experiment revealed, follow the LINK below, and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You!

I made one of these. Didn’t think of it’s shortcomings until you pointed them out. The heavier bolts are an excellent idea to put weight on the bottom.

Mr. West, I enjoy your videos immensely. If I may, I have a suggestion. Ikea strainer hobo stove performs better with a windscreen around it. A windscreen helps keeping the flames come up straight and letting the stove produce more usable heat. Already waiting for the next one.

You don't know until you try! Thanks for the experiment. Without being able to control the draft by turning into or away from the wind, that thing looks hazardous. Burns great, any which way it feels like it!

Inner windscreen maybe? I don't know if I'm THAT interested, though.

I own a Solo Stove Campfire,.. wich has a secondary burn,.. wich is more efficiënt for your fuel. But this one will do also fine i guess,.. I think for heating, (my partytent) this one might even do better because of the flames at the side!! Nice experiment though,.. try cooking on it and shoot a video about that plzz,.. i am curious how that works. You are doing a great job!! Keep it up!! Greetings from the Netherlands!!

Great video, thanks David. I actually have 4 of these in the pantry (wife bought 1 even though we had no need for it and 3 silly gifts). I have some scrap 1/16th inch metal sheets that can be cut and profiled rather easily to cover some of those holes. Tack weld them on and that will cover some of the holes and improve the draw and reduce the flames coming out the back and drive more flame out the top. That's actually a pretty simple and quick fix for me and a great weekend morning project for me to do with my son.

When I was fitting pipe, I could have made the perfect all stainless hobo stove... for free. 6" ss pipe, cap, expanded metal, bolts, etc. LOL! Lowe's wanted about $7 just for 4` 3/8" x 1 1/2" bolts and nuts. "I THINK NOT!!!"

Just on watching this, and it would be more “advanced” than just the hobo stove, but how about keeping the IKEA in the hobo stove and burning stuff that way? That would direct all the heat up. I may just try that if I find a silverware holder like that. More of the rocket stove idea...

Looks like a wind screen would be needed for the ikea stove for any practical use for cooking. I'd say that's an advantage to the regular hobo can stoves. Some people love those ikea stoves but I can take em or leave em. You ever tinker with wood gas stoves? Those are interesting. I've made a couple with varying results. Hard to get the perfect mix for volume of fuel to airflow and secondary burn combination. It can be done with the 1 quart paint can and Progresso soup can but those are a little on the too small side for me.
@beinggoodtopeople
@beinggoodtopeople 3 года назад
Yes I've made them but they need too much tending, add wood, add wood, add wood, repeat. Efficient use of fuel, but I like to set it and forget it, somewhat, pile it full and let it burn for 15 minutes at a time.

David, Nicely done 👍. I'd recommend that try to add a windscreen around the stove to dampen the effect of the wind pulling the flames away from the outflow near the top. Sorry you didn't get a good experience using it.

Around it or in it. Thanks!

David, either way works as a widescreen. One can add a section cut from a large coffee can and place it inside about 3/4 of the holes. Or you could make an external windscreen from aluminum flashing, at a very modest price. Good luck and looking forward to seeing your update video.

Got mine at Walmart for $3. Used three 1” conduit holders as feet. Cut two sections of the bottom holes outta the lower part of the side to feed in twigs & whatnot. Ive cooked alotta small game with this setup, can’t ask for more than that.

I've seen stoves modified like you describe on RU-vid. I've been looking for another one from the Goodwill Store. If they're that cheap, I'll just buy one from Walmart. Thanks, you've helped me out.

@@beinggoodtopeople Glad I could help ya out. The conduit holders (3) cost mebbe eighty cents at the local hardware store. You could prolly get away with using half inch conduit holders, they’ll give more than enough stability. Keep in mind while four is good for level surfaces- three will give you stability anywhere👍🏻

That setup would work very well if you were burning wood pellets, except for the wind. Why not use a wind screen? And test again? Also, it would be more stable if you used 1/4" x 4-6" long bolts on the lower holes on the sides (3 needed). Bend then to about a 45 deg angle where they exit the container. A lot less chance of tip over with a pot on top. And you can force them into the ground for more stability and to level the container at the same time. When out in the woods, nicely cut tree stumps are hard to find. So is hard flat level ground.

As many people point out just make or order a windshield

You think that this would work well for a gasifier type stove if you could put some kind of offset shroud over the sides? Normally woodgas stoves have a finely tuned number of holes for getting the right fuel to air ratio.
@beinggoodtopeople
@beinggoodtopeople 3 года назад
Gasifiers only have holes at the top and bottom.
@pawel_tips911
@pawel_tips911 3 года назад
you could use the holes which were already. Less effort - this same effect.

The wider and heavier the base legs the more stable the stove.

I stole my sons 5 1/6 bolts and sleeves from his basketball goal repair kit for the legs on my hobo stove lol he doesn’t know yet I’ll wait until he notices and then I’ll tell him it won’t be long he goes through a ton of them because of all the dunking he does.

Maybe hit it with some stainless steel muffler tape.

I thought about metal HVAC tape which wouldn't hold up. Didn't know there was such a thing as muffler tape. Don't know if I'm THAT interested to go to the trouble, though.
