Plastics are very topical at the moment due to the environmental problems they cause, but did you know that plastics can be made (really easily) in your own kitchen!? In another great kitchen science video, Dr Emilia Bertolo and Daniel talk about the science of polymers and polymerization while they make plastic from potatoes!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a question, can we mold this bioplastic to be cups or tableware? I read an article that says if this bioplastic exposure to water it will degrade easily so we can't use it as tableware, if this is really true?

can you also use citric acid/ lemon juice for the acid instead of vinegar?

I don't see why not, although I haven't tried it. The pH of vinegar is around 2-3, and lemon juice is around 2. In the lab we would use hydrochloric acid. It would be worth filtering the lemon juice, to avoid adding the pulp
